The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has approved research that will use artificial intelligence to delve into drug supply chains and probe for weaknesses, including foreign influence. Any overreliance on foreign inputs in drug supply chains could leave the U.S. open to dire shortages in the event of conflict or natural catastrophe. PREVIEWThe DHS-backed dive into drug supply chains will examine to what extent the supply of drugs might be susceptible to disruption. The new DHS-backed study will try to map out supply chains several layers deep, and potentially uncover previously hidden issues, Mr. Tuchman said. Consultant Steven Lynn says the pandemic opened people’s eyes to issues inherent in far-flung pharmaceutical supply chains.

Nov 30 (Reuters) - Netflix Inc (NFLX.O) co-founder Reed Hastings said on Wednesday he was "wrong" to resist ads for his streaming service. Hastings said Hulu proved streaming services could support advertising, and offer consumers lower prices. "I wish we had flipped a few years earlier on it," Hastings said during the New York Times DealBook summit. Reporting by Dawn ChmielewskiOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.
Nov 30 (Reuters) - Silicon Valley leaders welcomed Elon Musk's management of Twitter, with Netflix (NFLX.O) co-founder Reed Hastings going so far as to call the billionaire "the bravest, most creative person on the planet." Meta Platforms (META.O) CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday said he was keen to see how Elon Musk's management of content moderation on Twitter would fare, arguing it was good for platforms to take different approaches. "I would guess that not everything is going to work, but I think some things might work," he said. Hastings said Musk has a different management style than his own but added: "I'm 100% convinced he's trying to help the world with all of his endeavors." "It's not how I would do it, but I'm deeply respectful," said Hastings.

He added that their styles are different, but that Musk is "trying to help the world" by buying Twitter. Hastings said he is "100% convinced that he is trying to help the world in all of his endeavors," including buying Twitter. Musk has caused a stir with his changes since buying Twitter. Musk, who styles himself as a "free speech absolutist," has called the new blue-check system "the great leveler."
Netflix founder and co-CEO Reed Hastings said Wednesday he was slow to come around to advertising on the streaming platform because he was too focused on digital competition from Facebook and Google . "So Google and Facebook were going to mop up the world — and they have in non-TV advertising." Advertisers were "desperate" for avenues in connected TV and internet, Hastings said, but Netflix was still on the sidelines. "We didn't have to steal away the advertising revenue. There are also free streaming services, such as Paramount's Pluto and Fox Corp.'s Tubi, which make revenue solely through advertising.
Netflix probably left hundreds of millions of dollars on the table by not keeping Rian Johnson's "Glass Onion" in theaters. "Glass Onion" leaves theaters Tuesday. The truncated run for "Glass Onion" also prompted industry insiders to again question the streamer's theatrical release strategy. The first film's performance at the box office has provoked questions about why Netflix has limited the release of "Glass Onion" to just one week in a limited number of theaters. "Glass Onion" earned a 93% "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 238 reviews and an audience score of 92%, suggesting that it too could have generated the same kind of word of mouth.
Peters is a longtime Netflix exec who's quietly led its expansion overseas and into gaming. And the executive tapped to lead the charge is chief operating officer Greg Peters, who's long been the company's go-to for new business ventures. Joining Netflix in 2008 as chief streaming and partnerships officer, Peters quickly stood out as a rising star. The ads tier could also help Netflix with its expansion overseas, where its results have been uneven so far, Mahaney said. Peters played a key role in getting Netflix's creative execs on board with the ads business, one Hollywood insider noted.

NEW YORK, Nov 8 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Walt Disney (DIS.N) boss Bob Chapek is knee-deep in the video-streaming money pit. New subscribers keep signing up, too: Disney+ counts 164 million, a 39% jump from 12 months earlier. With investors now prioritizing costs over growth, however, Disney shares fell 10% in after-hours trading. Netflix generated $5 billion of operating profit over the first nine months of 2022. If the Netflix enterprise commands 18 times expected EBITDA, per Refinitiv data, Disney will find enough fairy dust to warrant a multiple higher than 12 times.
Netflix has told creators it won't be sharing any revenue from advertising with them, the people said. Rhimes signed a multiyear deal with Netflix in 2021 to exclusively make content for the streaming service. When she inked the deal, Netflix had a firm policy not to include advertising in its programming, a longtime tenet of co-founder and co-CEO Reed Hastings. Netflix executives have told creators they have thoughtfully placed midroll advertising at intervals that make sense with each episode's storyline, according to people familiar with the matter. They've also told creators they don't expect that many people to sign up for the basic advertising tier relative to subscribers who will pay for no commercials, the people said.

Trump Media and Technology Group executives named Parler and Rumble as theoretical acquisitions or partners, according to documents provided by co-founder and whistleblower, William Wilkerson, through his counsel. Wilkerson was one of the early executives at Trump Media and its Twitter-esque social media platform Truth Social. DWAC and Trump Media are also the subject of a criminal probe into possible securities violations relating to conversations that occurred between the two parties prior to the merger announcement. While the photo names these possible acquisition targets, it also names a number of other ventures for Trump Media that have yet to come to fruition, including "Trump Faith/Classic Films," "Trump Book Publishing" and "Trump Documentaries."
Former Time Warner CEO Jeffrey Bewkes implied Netflix was overrated in a 2010 interview. A new book about HBO reveals that Netflix CEO Reed Hastings took the comments in stride. "We didn't have the financial flexibility to make that commitment," former HBO CEO Richard Plepler told the book's authors, Gillette and Koblin. In other words, Netflix wanted to be more like HBO and HBO's corporate overlords wanted it to be more like Netflix. HBO's content chief, Casey Bloys, was recently elevated to CEO of HBO, HBO Max, and HBO Content.
"When our vaccination policy was implemented, vaccination was critical in preventing community spread," he added. Nike employees were overwhelmingly in favor of the vaccine mandate. 'Not sure where this leaves those of us who were fired only months ago'It's unclear how many people Nike terminated for not complying with its vaccine mandate. A group called the Health Freedom Defense Fund is suing Disney over its vaccine mandate, which like Nike's, required vaccination as a condition of employment. Companies have the broad authority to mandate vaccines in their workplace, according to Dorit Rubinstein Reiss, a UC Hastings law professor, and vaccine policy expert.

But Hastings told CNN during the same show that no ground rules were laid out for the story and he assumed his talks with McChrystal were on the record. Now, Netflix is gunning for the last reel of the pay TV business: its estimated $153 billion pool of global advertising revenue. The company and some analysts see its new, cheaper ad-supported service, detailed in a rosy quarterly report on Tuesday, as a way to lift revenue as customers trim spending amid economic gloom. As TV's audience shrinks, it becomes less attractive for advertisers - and a plum target for Netflix to disrupt. Netflix plans to launch an ad-supported version of its service in the United States and 11 other countries in November. Some Wall Street analysts said the ad-supported version of the Netflix service might entice some price-sensitive existing subscribers to switch to the less-expensive option.
Netflix will begin charging for password sharing beginning in early 2023. The "extra member" feature will allow additional users to have their own sub-account for a fee. The streaming giant announced on Tuesday it officially will begin charging for account sharing early next year, after hinting at a crackdown in recent months. The move comes as other streaming companies begin identifying ways to prevent and limit password sharing. According to a March survey from the Leichtman Research Group, an estimated one-third of US Netflix subscribers currently share their log-ins.
