A few months ago, a three-post exchange between Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk on Mr. Musk’s X would have passed for petty sniping between billionaire rivals. “Just learned tonight at Mar-a-Lago that Jeff Bezos was telling everyone that @realDonaldTrump would lose for sure, so they should sell all their Tesla and SpaceX stock,” Mr. Musk wrote Wednesday night, referring to two of his companies. 100% not true,” Mr. Bezos responded on Thursday morning. “Well, then, I stand corrected,” Mr. Musk wrote back, with a laughing-crying emoji. With President-elect Donald J. Trump's history of animosity toward Mr. Bezos, the posts carried an unspoken message about Mr. Musk’s growing power within the incoming administration.

“Everybody’s saying, ‘Well, what do you mean by remorse?’” said the artist Maira Kalman, whose latest book, “Still Life With Remorse,” is a meditation in words and pictures on the nature of remorse, memory and family lore. “And I say regret is, ‘I’m sorry I ruined the roast, I’m sorry I didn’t come to your birthday party.’ Regret is OK,” she said. “Remorse is, ‘I’m sorry I ruined your life.’ Remorse is deep sorrow and guilt. There’s more, ‘What did I do to somebody?’”It was a late afternoon in early November, less than two weeks before Ms. Kalman’s 75th birthday. She was sitting in her apartment in Greenwich Village, drinking tea she had brewed with fresh mint.

After returning to the site on November 1, Deep Sea Vision — an ocean exploration company based in Charleston, South Carolina, that captured the original sonar image — has identified the object to be a natural rock formation. The hunt for Earhart’s plane continuesThe rock formation was more than 16,000 feet (4,877 meters) underwater. The team sent out the AUV directly above the site in early November, producing a high-resolution image of the rock formation. After the anxious wait, the image surprisingly revealed that the object was a natural rock formation, he said. More than half of non-retired US adults (53%) overall said they expect they will need to use Social Security to pay for necessary expenses, according to a new survey from Bankrate. Social Security benefits only replace a portion of Americans’ pre-retirement income. Indeed, only 31% of the non-retired adults surveyed said they are not planning to rely on Social Security benefits in retirement, with just 14% saying they will “not (be) at all” reliant on them. Matt Gaetz, who faced a torrent of scrutiny over allegations of sex trafficking and drug use, abruptly withdrew his bid to become attorney general on Thursday in the first major political setback for President-elect Donald J. Trump since his election this month. The collapse of Mr. Gaetz’s prospective candidacy just 16 days after the election appeared to be the earliest such failed cabinet pick in modern history and underscored the haphazard way that Mr. Trump has gone about assembling his new administration. He picked Mr. Gaetz almost on a whim last week without extensive vetting, knowing that allegations were out there, but essentially daring Senate Republicans to accept him anyway. Mr. Trump moved quickly to replace Mr. Gaetz with another conservative favorite. By the day’s end, he announced on social media that he planned to nominate Pam Bondi, the former attorney general of Florida and one of his defense lawyers in his first impeachment trial, to be U.S. attorney general.
