Josh Edelson | AFP | Getty ImagesIn June, Apple announced iOS 17, the latest version of the iPhone operating system. Here are some of the biggest changes in iOS 17. A new feature called NameDrop allows two iPhone users to share contact details by simply bringing their phones close together. So, if you have two dogs, Apple Photos can tell the difference between the two in search and other applications. In iOS 17, Apple will be able to automatically input two-factor authentication codes from emails received in the Mail app.

DoorDash recently fired a driver after he cursed at a woman for tipping $5 on a $20 order. It comes as more businesses are asking customers to tip at cash registers and even at self-checkout stations. In a blog post from 2019, Grubhub suggested customers tip 20% — and consider adding more if it's an extra-big order, or if there's bad weather. That means the woman who tipped $5 on her $20 DoorDash order — which is a 25% gratuity — actually gave quite a good tip, drivers said. "A $5 tip on a $20 order?

A video of a fire burning vehicles in a parking lot is from April in Australia but is being shared online as if it were from the riots in France in late June and early July. Unrest and discontent due to the killing of a 17-year-old by police on June 27 led to riots across France. Examples of posts sharing a clip with the caption, “Rioters set fire to a parking lot filled with brand new vehicles” in Marseille, France can be seen (here) and (here). A search for the Pickles Bibra Lake branch on Google Maps leads to street view images of the storage yard that matches the clip shared on social media, viewable (tinyurl.com/yc8sbwd2). The announcement did not name Choi and gave only limited details, although some media subsequently identified Choi and his links with Foxconn. The unreleased 18-page indictment, reviewed by Reuters, provides details in the case against Choi, including how he is alleged to have stolen Samsung's trade secrets and details about the planned Foxconn plant. Choi's Singapore-based consultancy Jin Semiconductor won the contract with Foxconn around August 2018, according to the indictment. According to the indictment, the new Foxconn plant had planned capacity of 100,000 wafers per month using 20-nanometre DRAM memory chip technology. However, Foxconn ended the contract just a year later and only paid salaries related to the project, the lawyer said.

Google is cutting jobs at its Waze mapping service as it merges the unit with its own map products. "We have decided to transition Waze's ads monetization to be managed by the Global Business Organization (GBO), similar to Google Maps," Phillips wrote. "Unfortunately, this will result in a reduction of Waze Ads monetization-focused roles in sales, marketing, operations and analytics." The company hopes to "create a more scalable and optimized Waze Ads product," Phillips wrote, adding that it will "wind down the current Waze Ads product while we focus on building new Waze Ads powered by Google Ads." The Waze unit has more than 500 employees, according to internal documentation viewed by CNBC.

Google lays off staff at its mapping app Waze
  + stars: | 2023-06-27 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
June 27 (Reuters) - Alphabet-owned Google (GOOGL.O) on Tuesday said it is cutting jobs at mapping app Waze as it merges the app's advertising system with Google Ads technology, without giving details on the number of layoffs. "In order to create a better, more seamless long-term experience for Waze advertisers, we've begun transitioning Waze's existing advertising system to Google Ads technology. As part of this update, we've reduced those roles focused on Waze Ads monetization," Google, which acquired Waze for about $1.3 billion in 2013, said. Google had in December said that it will merge Waze and Google Maps teams to consolidate processes, making it a part of the Google Geo division, its portfolio of real-world mapping products that include Google Maps, Google Earth, and Street View. The news was first reported by CNBC earlier in the day, citing an email from Chris Phillips, who leads the Geo division.

A Flip Phone Keeps Me Sane

I still needed my smartphone for work, but I would use my flip phone when I ventured out into the world and on weekends. My Alcatel was a “dumb phone,” a Dostoyevsky-“The-Idiot”-of-phones that helped me see the simplicity in the world. The first week I had my flip phone, I read a book. Also, you’ll have to call me and describe that meme you’re trying to send, because my phone doesn’t do visuals. Most of the time, I hate the inconvenience of my flip phone.

Russia has ramped up its trained dolphin force that protects its Black Sea fleet, UK intelligence said. Russia has been training dolphins in the Black Sea since the Cold War, according to the United States Naval Institute. The MOD also noted Russia's documented use of marine animals elsewhere, saying "Russia has trained animals for a range of missions." Fake reviews have been a recurring problem on internet commerce sites. Google said Hu buys thousands of fake positive reviews to make the businesses appear legitimate. He then allegedly sells the profiles as "leads" to real businesses in the same fields, which receive contacts from potential customers who reach out to the fake businesses. Google said Hu created more than 350 false profiles bolstered by over 14,000 illegitimate reviews. The lawsuit accused Hu of false advertising, unlawful business practices and violating Google's terms of service.

Its 2022 advertising revenue, including from search services, Gmail, Google Play, Google Maps, YouTube adverts, Google Ad Manager, AdMob and AdSense, amounted to $224.5 billion. EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager said Google may have to sell part of its adtech business because a behavioural remedy is unlikely to be effective at stopping the anti-competitive practices. The Commission said it took issue with Google favouring its own online display advertising technology services to the detriment of competing providers of advertising technology services, advertisers and online publishers.
