IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Zach Edey had 30 points and 18 rebounds to lead No. Edey, the reigning national player of the year, put constant pressure on Iowa’s smaller frontcourt while getting his 12th double-double of the season. Iowa later answered with seven consecutive points before the Boilermakers closed the half with a 9-3 run to lead 47-34 at halftime. Purdue maintained a double-digit lead for most of the second half before Iowa got to within 78-70 with 4:22 left. Edey was as dominant inside, as usual, and Purdue’s 3-point shooting left Iowa defenseless.

NEW YORK (AP) — A group of people and businesses who say they are owed money by Rudy Giuliani gathered virtually Friday for the first court hearing since he declared bankruptcy last month after losing a defamation suit to two Georgia election workers. Biden is suing Giuliani, saying he wrongly shared his personal data after obtaining it from the owner of a computer repair shop. The Chapter 11 declaration halted the judgment but also prevented Giuliani from challenging the verdict. During Friday's hearing, Giuliani's attorney tried to convince the bankruptcy judge, Sean Lane, to temporarily lift a stay to allow him to appeal the judgment. “This guy stiffed a lot of workers.”The next hearing is scheduled for Jan. 31.

The Supreme Court heard arguments on Wednesday in two cases inviting the justices to drastically restrict the authority of federal agencies, upend decades of precedent and take more power for themselves. At least four members of the court seem prepared to do so. The question is whether Chief Justice John Roberts or Justice Amy Coney Barrett will go along with them to provide a majority. Out of respect for precedent and judicial humility, they should not. Conservatives have been stalking this precedent for years, believing, in the words of Justice Neil Gorsuch in 2016, that it gives “prodigious new powers to an already titanic administrative state.”

Washington CNN —The two Georgia election workers who won a nearly $150 million judgment against Rudy Giuliani accused the former Trump lawyer and New York mayor in a court filing Thursday of unfairly taking advantage of the bankruptcy system. However, filing for bankruptcy gave Giuliani an immediate pause from having to pay debts he owes. He is also looking to appeal the jury verdict in proceedings outside of bankruptcy court, which would require permission from the bankruptcy judge. After hearing testimony from Freeman, Moss and experts, a DC jury awarded the extraordinary sum for the harm he did to them. Moss and Freeman noted in their filing Thursday that Giuliani continued to defame them, even this month, by repeating the falsehood that they counted fraudulent votes in the 2020 presidential election.

Behind the LawsuitDiversity statements — also known as diversity, equity and inclusion, or D.E.I., statements — ask candidates seeking a faculty job or promotion to describe how they would contribute to campus diversity. In his lawsuit, John Haltigan, who has a Ph.D. in developmental psychology, said he would have applied to a position at U.C. The Pacific Legal Foundation, a libertarian group that filed the lawsuit for Dr. Haltigan, did not make him available for an interview. They also say the statements are another tool that the savvy can use to hit the right buzzwords, rewarding performative dishonesty. requirements for faculty hiring — or the system’s diversity and inclusion efforts more broadly — but it defangs for now what experts say was among the first legal challenges to these university statements.

Japanese baseball player Shohei Ohtani attends a press conference on his presentation after signing a 10-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles, California, on Dec. 14, 2023. At first glance, Shohei Ohtani's $700 million, 10-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers is nothing short of a Ruthian blockbuster, topping all other free agent pacts. The deal was originally reported as a $700 million, 10-year deal, which drastically tops all previous MLB contracts in terms of total compensation and average annual value. And on the other side of the spectrum, annual inflation was consistently less than 2% for much of the 2010s. For him, the decision to sign the deal with the Dodgers had more to do with earning things on the field than off.

Florida Governor and Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis campaigns in Ames, Iowa last month. Photo: Fritz Nordengren/Zuma PressA recurring phenomenon of this election cycle is that the same media outlets promoting regular allegations that Donald Trump is the greatest threat to the country also regularly encourage news consumers to view the next most popular candidate among Republican voters as doomed to fail. The loss of media credibility in the Trump era is an old story but isn’t there any journalistic interest in at least allowing a non-Trump alternative to receive a fair hearing? Witness Sunday’s questioning on Meet the Press by NBC’s Kristen Welker, who in interviewing Gov. Ron DeSantis (R., Fla.) seemed determined to confirm the theory that media companies want another Trump candidacy to boost ratings while enhancing the chances of a Democratic victory.

Now Mr. Phillips is looking less like a man trying to make a polite point and more like a guy who wants to win this thing. While the Democratic Party’s prominent governors and senators have still not chosen to challenge Mr. Biden, the White House may already understand that the relatively obscure man from the Land of 10,000 Lakes could be a formidable opponent. Mr. Phillips at first tried running a nice respectful campaign claiming that Mr. Biden has been a successful president but is just not the right candidate for 2024.
