CNN —An 18-year-old man has been detained on suspicion of killing a former Ukrainian lawmaker, local authorities say, after her fatal shooting in the city of Lviv. Iryna Farion, 60, died in hospital last Friday after she was shot in western Ukraine, the mayor of Lviv, Andriy Sadoviy, posted on Facebook. A specialist team of Ukrainian security forces and criminal analysts tracked down the suspect on Thursday after 139 hours of investigative work, according to the country’s Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko. “We checked every corner of the shooter’s escape route,” Klymenko posted on Telegram. GRAND PRAIRIE, Alberta AP —One of two raging wildfires menacing the town of Jasper in the Canadian Rockies’ largest national park roared into town Wednesday and began burning buildings. Jasper National Park officials said the fire entered the southern edge of the community Wednesday evening and crews were battling multiple structural fires and working to protect key infrastructure. Forest firefighters and others without self-contained breathing apparatuses were told to evacuate to the nearby town of Hinton, with structural firefighters staying behind. Searchers looking through the backcountry trails of Jasper National Park already had picked up 245 people, and they continued the search Wednesday in two helicopters, Ellsworth said. Residents and visitors streamed out by the thousands late Monday and Tuesday, and officials said Wednesday the evacuation of the town of Jasper was complete.

The wildfire shut down the main highway to Yosemite National Park as red flag fire warnings and high temperatures continue throughout the state. Wildfires are blazing across western U.S. and Canada, prompting thousands to evacuate, shutting down highways and fouling the air quality over several states. In the U.S., wildfires are raging in Oregon, California and Washington, illuminating skies with bright orange flames and haze. In California, the Apache fire sparked Tuesday evening near Highway 33 and Apache Canyon Road in Ventura County in the Los Padres National Forest. The blaze, estimated to be 250 acres, led the county to order evacuations for residences on Apache Canyon Road, local fire officials said.

Trees are sucking up just as much, if not more, methane than soil does — the only other known natural sink on Earth. "We've been undervaluing trees for their climate benefits," Vincent Gauci, a professor at the University of Birmingham and the lead author of the study, told Business Insider. Both natural and human-made methane emissions from wetlands, cows, landfills, and burning fossil fuels are on the rise. In a 2017 study, they found that trees in Amazon floodplains emitted more methane than they absorbed. Satellites detect lower methane emissions than what scientists have found on the ground, implying that such "bottom-up" studies either overestimated methane emissions or missed a sink.

CNN —A reality show contestant who killed and ate a protected bird has been let off with a warning after New Zealand wildlife officials said cast members were tired, hungry and placed in a “unique” situation. Spencer “Corry” Jones, an American white water river guide, killed and ate the large, flightless weka during filming of “Race to Survive: New Zealand” last fall, CNN affiliate RNZ reported Tuesday. Swain said the producers of “Race to Survive” had a permit to film on public conservation land and were aware that protected species and plants could not be harvested or eaten. In a statement, “Race to Survive” production said it alerted authorities as soon as they became aware of the weka incident. New Zealand has a plethora of unique flora and fauna due to its long geological isolation from the supercontinent Gondwana, according to independent conservation organization Forest and Bird.

CNN —A 72-year-old Montana man shot and killed a grizzly bear after it attacked him while he was alone picking huckleberries, according to the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks. The man was hospitalized after the encounter, which happened Thursday evening near Columbia Falls on Flathead National Forest lands, the agency said in a news release. FWP’s wardens and bear specialists referred to the incident as a “surprise defensive encounter.”The man reportedly shot the bear with a handgun after the adult female grizzly charged him, the release stated. Grizzly bears, which live in the US states of Montana, Alaska, Idaho, Wyoming and Washington, feed on berries as part of their diet, according to the North American Bear Center. Bear attacks are rare, with most bears usually interested in protecting their space, food or cubs, according to the National Park Service.

However, Kiwis practiced "fearless parenting," reinforcing a sense of adventure, the need for sustainability, and problem-solving skills from birth through childhood. This is when I learned that most Kiwi parents tend to measure danger in two categories — possible or probable. New Zealand parents rely on imagination and ingenuity to make use of old things, so there is a tendency to conserve more and waste less. A double whammyFor aspiring homebuyers such as Burress, the combination of high mortgage rates and rising list prices has left them feeling boxed out. The 30-year mortgage rate, a popular option for home financing in the U.S., has bounced around 7% for the past several months. Given this, co-author Jonah Coste said current owners touting these low mortgage rates are undoubtedly better off than those looking to buy a first home today. After welcoming three kids, they're holding off on a fourth until mortgage rates or home prices come down enough to upsize. To be clear, mortgage rates tend to follow the path of Fed-set interest levels, but they aren't the same thing.

When it comes to surviving the apocalypse, you could do a lot worse than the West Virginia branch of Fortitude Ranch, a constellation of five survivalist compounds across the United States and one of a growing number of businesses aiming to seize on Americans’ deepening anxieties about the future. Set on a rise above the lush valley cradling the Lost River in eastern West Virginia, about two hours from Washington, D.C., the 50-acre property backs up against the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. A handsome guesthouse, built of dark timber slats, anchors the property. Two large, boxy dormitories, also timber but more rustic, as well as a bare-bones bunker, are designed to house more than 100 members. On a tabletop sits a 50-caliber rifle, which could be used to take out the engine block of an approaching vehicle.
