CNN —Donald Trump’s election victory will return him to the White House, but both his allies and detractors have made clear his second time around will look nothing like the first. Instead, Trump has found himself relying on people like Donald Trump Jr., Elon Musk and Susie Wiles throughout his third run for the White House. Republicans are projected to retake the majority in the US Senate. AdvertisementRepublicans are projected to regain control of the US Senate after winning seats in West Virginia and Ohio, according to Fox News and the Associated Press, ending four years of Democratic control. Republicans also appeared likely to win a 52nd seat in Montana, where Sen. Jon Tester trailed the GOP candidate Tim Sheehy. Despite dramatically outraising Republicans in many of this year's tightest Senate races, Democrats faced a punishing map and were primarily on defense. Democrats' best pick-up opportunity in the Senate was in Texas, where Republican Sen. Ted Cruz ultimately survived a tougher-than-expected challenge from Rep. Colin Allred.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk and his business empire stand to reap massive rewards if former President Donald Trump returns to the White House. Elon Musk joins former US President Donald Trump during a campaign event in Butler, Pa., on Oct. 5, 2024. “I love Elon Musk,” Trump said at a rally in July. It’s not clear how Musk and Trump would navigate the ethical questions around a possible government role for the tech billionaire. “He would be in much less trouble in a Trump administration because Trump shares his hostility to regulation and regulators,” Richard Pierce, a law professor at George Washington University specializing in government regulation, told NBC News in an interview earlier this year.

With Election Day underway, income investors should soon find out how their portfolio may — or may not — be affected by the outcome. Harris has said she wants to boost the corporate tax rate to 28% and increase the top rate for long-term capital gains to 28% for those making more than $1 million. That means that those who are buying AMT bonds but not paying AMT are getting free income, he said. Lastly, a higher corporate tax rate could also spur banks and insurance companies to return to the muni market. The companies owned a lot of municipal bonds when the tax rate was 35% and many bought more corporate bonds when the tax rate fell to 21%, Brandon said.

Voting systems: How we know the election is secure

Musk has used X to spread unfounded allegations about voting systems, laying groundwork to question the election before it happens. To better understand the security of US voting systems and why there’s no indication that they’re not secure, I talked to CNN’s Zachary Cohen, who covers national security, and Sean Lyngaas, who covers cybersecurity. There are three large election equipment vendors in the US: Dominion; ES&S, or Election Systems and Software; and Hart InterCivic. Dominion Voting Systems ballot-counting machines are lined up at a Torrance County warehouse during testing of election equipment with local candidates and partisan officers in Estancia, New Mexico, on September 29, 2022. GOP senators and top aides say the race could go either way. Scott, who is a McConnell critic, has been more willing to fall in line with Trump than Cornyn or Thune over the last several years. Both Thune and Cornyn are closely politically aligned with the longtime GOP leader. Asked if he would like to get more public endorsements from GOP senators, Thune said he is not asking anyone to do that. They also point out his remarkable ascent – he defeated then-Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle in 2004 and is now on a path to possibly becoming GOP leader.

Given a second chance to resuscitate his young career, Bryce Young produced something equally as rare during Week 9 of the NFL season — a victory for the Carolina Panthers. 1 overall pick of the 2023 NFL draft, who was benched earlier this season after just 18 career starts, led Carolina on a game-winning drive to beat New Orleans 23-22. After the Panthers took over with 3:26 left in the fourth quarter trailing 22-17, Young threw a pair of incompletions before he found Xavier Legette for 26 yards. On the next play, Young threw the ball high downfield, inducing a pass interference penalty that moved the ball 16 yards from the end zone. Less common is the benched starter who returns to earn full favor within an organization that had lost enough confidence to initially sit him.

A political video reminded women that they can vote for Vice President Kamala Harris without telling their husbands, enraging prominent conservatives and reigniting a fiery discourse that highlights the central role of gender in this year’s election. “Did you make the right choice?” one of the husbands asks. “Sure did, honey,” his wife responds with a smile, sharing a knowing glance with the woman beside her. Meanwhile, Trump’s campaign has embraced an image of traditional masculinity, actively courting influencers and comedians who are popular among young men. In the wake of the discourse, Atwood shared a political cartoon of women entering a voting booth dressed in handmaids’ attire and shedding their red uniforms upon exiting.

Montana Republican Senate candidate Tim Sheehy struggled in a new interview to give a clear explanation about the circumstances surrounding an incident in a national park in 2015 that led to him being treated for a gunshot wound and receiving a fine. All accounts agree that, as first reported by the Washington Post this spring, Sheehy went to the hospital after his gun went off in Glacier National Park in 2015 (firing a weapon is illegal in a national park). The ranger said Sheehy told him he had accidentally shot himself in the arm, and Sheehy then went to the hospital for treatment. He was given a $525 ticket for the gun going off at Glacier National Park and paid it, he told the Post in April, to avoid an investigation into his unit. Kelly this week pressed Sheehy about any medical records that would help to confirm his account of what happened; Sheehy responded that those records do not exist.

Clad in dress clothes, the man identified himself as a private investigator and said he was conducting a criminal investigation into election fraud. “You’re not going to come in here, grill me like this and I’m not going to find out what’s going on.”Barry County Sheriff Dar Leaf. Bridget Bennett / Reuters fileShe soon learned that the deputy and the private investigator had visited other township offices as part of an effort to find evidence of election fraud. And the man responsible for it was the top lawman in the area — Barry County Sheriff Dar Leaf. Leaf fashions himself as a “constitutional sheriff.” Sheriffs like him see themselves as holding supreme authority in their counties, exceeding that of state and federal law enforcement officials.

Republican presidential nominee and former U.S. President Donald Trump attends his campaign rally at Macomb Community College in Warren, Michigan, U.S., November 1, 2024. Throughout the week, Trump's campaign aired thousands of ads focused on his policy platform: universal tariffs, deeper tax cuts and sweeping immigrant deportations. "This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign," Trump campaign senior advisor Danielle Alvarez said last Sunday night. The Harris campaign has spun Trump's comment into a contrast to back its bipartisan case for the Democratic presidential nominee.
