Economists also noted that goods prices tumbled in November, which could have weighed on retail sales last month. Retail sales fell 0.6% last month, the biggest drop since December 2021, after an unrevised 1.3% jump in October. Online retail sales decreased 0.9%, which was at odds with reports of strong Black Friday sales. Sales at food services and drinking places, the only services category in the retail sales report, increased 0.9%. Data for October was revised lower to show these so-called core retail sales increasing 0.5% instead of 0.7% as previously reported.
Retail sales for the month declined 0.6%, even worse than the Dow Jones estimate for a 0.3% drop. Stock market futures added to losses following the report, with futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average off about 350 points. On a year-over-year basis, retail sales increased 6.5%, compared to a CPI inflation rate of 7.1%. In other economic news Thursday, the Labor Department said weekly jobless claims fell to 211,000, a decline of 20,000 from the previous period and well below the Dow Jones estimate for 232,000. Also, separate surveys from regional Federal Reserve districts showed contraction in manufacturing activity in December.
Of seven new dams planned in Laos, at least four are co-financed by Chinese companies, according to Mekong Dam Monitor data. 'WAKE-UP CALL'Farmers in the Vietnamese Mekong River Delta region were not prepared for the speed at which their landscape - and fortunes - have changed. The Mekong River Commission estimated in 2018 that total sediment flow by now would be around 47 million tonnes per year. "Mainstream dams catch everything," said economist Brian Eyler at the Stimson Center, which runs the Mekong Dam Monitor. The Xayaburi and Don Sahong dams in Laos are the most recent to come online, with Xayaburi the largest on the entire Mekong River.
Turns out it’s the same sample, a sleight of ear designed to trigger warm nostalgia, and also maybe a little confusion. Even its video is optimized for recognition, with Santana doing the same stomp Beyoncé does in hers, in an almost identical outfit. Throughout 2022, that gambit has been deployed again and again — by pop singers and rappers, established stars and newbies. Here, old songs — hip-hop classics, pop novelties and more — are scrunched and stretched sometimes to the point of absurdity. These songs are concessions that say the quiet part out loud — everyone has always been borrowing voraciously, from everyone else, constantly.
Inflation and a hawkish Fed "I think the data can influence his press conference and how hawkish he is," said NatWest Markets' John Briggs. "If you get a higher CPI report on the back of that, it could create some significant market instability ahead of the Fed meeting." Recession fears "If you're more worried about recession than inflation, that means you bring in more bond buyers than sellers," he said. The Republican Party has eked out a slender House majority, likely 222-213, four members more than are needed for control. The GOP should direct its gratitude to Misha Tseytlin , a soft-spoken Chicago lawyer who helped engineer the margin of victory in an unlikely place—New York state. Kathy Hochul approved a gerrymandered electoral map drawn by Albany Democrats that could have handed them victory in as many as 22 of the Empire State’s 26 districts. Mr. Tseytlin, 41, filed suit the same day, arguing that the map violated a 2014 constitutional amendment against gerrymandering that had been championed by, among others, the late former New York City Mayor Ed Koch , a Democrat. The state Senate at the time was under Republican control, the Assembly was Democratic, and Democrat Andrew Cuomo was governor.
Kathy Hochul signed a law Tuesday banning certain bitcoin mining operations that run on carbon-based power sources. "The bitcoin mining industry is actually leading in terms of compliance with that Act." "Our customers are being scared off from investing in New York state," said Foundry's Zhang. "Bitcoin mining operations are providing high-paying and high-grade, great jobs for local communities. "Other blue states often follow the lead of New York state and this would be giving them an easy template to replicate," said Foundry's Zhang.
I've since built wealth through real estate, but can't bring myself to buy life insurance of my own just yet. But on the whole, real estate has been a great way to have invested the proceeds from my father's life insurance policy and inheritance. Now that I am a mom, I know that I should probably get a life insurance policy of my own. For now, my "insurance policy" is aiming to take excellent care of my body, mind, and finances. Life insurance was a moving gift from my dad.

After I was laid off, I started a non-alcoholic wine companyCourtesy of Molly FedickIn December of 2020, I was laid off from Hinge along with a few other people on the marketing team. It was during that time that I came up with the idea for my business Buzzkill Wines, which is a non-alcoholic wine company. So when I stopped drinking, I Googled non-alcoholic wine. Rep. Jamaal Bowman chuckled when asked about New York City's impending moment of power. Pelosi's decision to step down from leadership means the top two Democrats could both hail from New York. House Democrats won't formally elect their new leaders until new elections are held in the coming weeks. Pelosi announced that while she will be stepping down from party leadership, she will remain in Congress. Her announcement set into motion a massive overhaul for the top 3 House Democrats, ushering in a new generation of party leadership.
Democrats could have prevailed had their state party — which was busy deflecting progressive criticism of their conduct — marshaled better infrastructure and financial support for swing-district candidates. The icing on this rotten cake is that New York Democrats have no one to blame but themselves. Facing challenging new maps, Maloney and his moderate allies panicked that many of the popular progressives who had already announced their candidacies simply could not win. In a moment of exceptional self-unawareness that only underscored the broader myopia of establishment New York Democrats, Maloney took the news of his loss Tuesday as an opportunity to swipe at Ocasio-Cortez. Seth Wenig / AP fileBetween interparty bad blood and challenging electoral maps, the Democratic Party machine also appeared uninterested or unable to translate Democratic enthusiasm into meaningful on-the-ground organizing.
Wholesale prices increased less than expected in October, adding to hopes that inflation is on the wane, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Tuesday. The monthly increase equaled September's gain of 0.2%. Excluding food, energy and trade services, the index also rose 0.2% on the month and 5.4% on the year. Hopes that inflation is at least slowing spiked last week when the CPI showed a monthly gain of 0.4%, lower than the 0.6% estimate. The central bank has hiked its benchmark borrowing rate six times year for a total of 3.75 percentage points, its highest level in 14 years.
This week, bond yields also came off their highs and were sharply lower, paving the way for gains in tech and growth shares. They include Fed Vice Chair Lael Brainard, New York Fed President John Williams and Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari to name a few. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul became the first woman elected to lead the Empire State after she defeated Republican U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin , according to the Associated Press, in a closer-than-expected race that caught the attention of national Democrats. While there are twice as many enrolled Democrats in the state as Republicans, polls showed the race tightening in October and Ms. Hochul’s margin of victory was less than 10%, according to the state Board of Elections. That marks the best showing by a GOP gubernatorial candidate since George Pataki secured the last Republican statewide win in 2002.

ZNera Space’s principal architects, Najmus Chowdry and Nils Remess, envision Downtown Circle as a horizontal stroke against Dubai’s vertiginous, futuristic skyline of seemingly endless skyscrapers. An ever-changing skylineAs compelling and radical a design the Downtown Circle may be, it is – for now – practically and financially implausible, Chowdry and Remess admit. Downtown Circle would draw power from both solar and solar-hydrogen cell systems. Part of the design concept includes an electric tram system suspended around the bottom of the structure. ZNera SpaceThe design was drawn up to align with Dubai’s optimistic masterplan for a sustainable urban environment by 2040.
In the Empire State, recreational marijuana sales could balloon to $7 billion once the market is fully established. The state's limited medical cannabis program has also seen expansion under the new adult-use bill. The list of qualifying medical conditions for medical cannabis was expanded, along with product options. The exceptions to this may be existing medical operators wishing to transition to adult-use and microbusinesses. Analysts say this makes sense as the industry matures and cannabis companies begin to think of themselves as consumer product companies.
