Bhatnagar pointed to how Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation will help India's Tata Electronics to build the country's first 12-inch wafer fab in Gujarat. However, analysts said India first needs to learn the ropes before it can compete with the East Asian giant, especially since its semiconductor manufacturing industry is still at a very nascent stage. "India is far behind China in semiconductor manufacturing. Earlier in September, the U.S. Department of State announced it will partner with the India Semiconductor Mission and India's electronics and IT government body to improve the global semiconductor value chain. The Micron pop led to broad-based early strength in semiconductor stocks and other tech names. Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra's post-earnings commentary on HBM demand was particularly striking. The last major semiconductor shortage happened during the Covid-19 pandemic amid supply chain disruption and a rise in demand for consumer electronics as people were forced to stay and work at home. These GPUs which are housed in data centers are critical for the training of huge AI models which underpin applications like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Bain said demand for GPUs and AI consumer electronics could be the cause of a chip shortage. The semiconductor supply chain is spread across multiple companies. “Geopolitical tensions, trade restrictions, and multinational tech companies’ decoupling of their supply chains from China continue to pose serious risks to semiconductor supply.

Gold, traditionally perceived as a haven, has climbed roughly 30% this year, outperforming the benchmark S&P 500 index’s 20% gain. Fresh consumer confidence data on Tuesday indicated that Americans are feeling pessimistic about the US economy and future of the job market. JPMorgan Chase researchers said in a note on Monday that they expect the yellow metal to continue running toward their 2025 target price of $2,850 an ounce as the Fed brings down rates. Silver, another precious metal that tends to move in tandem with gold, has jumped roughly 34% this year, outperforming the yellow metal. New moves from China to revive its economy also has the potential to lift precious metals, said Rhind.

The last major semiconductor shortage happened during the Covid-19 pandemic amid supply chain disruption and a rise in demand for consumer electronics as people were forced to stay and work at home. These are often referred to as AI-enabled devices and companies from Samsung to Microsoft have released such products. Bain said demand for GPUs and AI consumer electronics could be the cause of a chip shortage. Bain & Company noted that the semiconductor supply chain is "incredibly complex, and a demand increase of about 20% or more has a high likelihood of upsetting the equilibrium and causing a chip shortage." "The AI explosion across the confluence of the large end markets could easily surpass that threshold, creating vulnerable chokepoints throughout the supply chain," the report added.

SHENZHEN, China — Chinese vendor Yin Xinwei sometimes makes close to $1,400 a day selling low-priced pill boxes, barbecue spits and other items to U.S. online consumers. Each year hundreds of millions of packages, mostly from Chinese platforms, are sent directly to American consumers eager to take advantage of rock-bottom prices on clothing, electronics and other products. That could mean painful times ahead for the Chinese sellers that supply the platforms — and higher prices for American consumers. Chinese state media has criticized the proposal as protectionist and say it will hurt American consumers. Yin used to sell to Chinese consumers but has given up his domestic business to focus entirely on the overseas market.

That's liquid cooling, a cooling technology used in data centers which helps to improve power and cost efficiency. "As air cooling is approaching the limit of its cooling capacity, the importance of liquid cooling is getting increasingly more pronounced … liquid cooling [is] becoming a must-have for GB200," said the bank. Nomura estimates the liquid cooling penetration rate in Nvidia's AI servers is set to rise from 8% in 2024 to 43% in 2025, and 47% in 2026. Liquid cooling systems are the solution to "power shortage pressures" in data centers, Morgan Stanley said in a previous report . Against that backdrop, Jefferies is bullish on four Asian stocks it says will be "key beneficiaries" of the liquid cooling trend.

As things stand, Intel is the only US chip firm with plants, known as fabs, that are capable of making advanced semiconductors. TSMC is set to open a fab in Arizona next year, while reports suggest Sam Altman is seeking to raise funds to create chip manufacturing plants. Intel's customers in China include Alibaba and TikTok parent company ByteDance, which have been subject to scrutiny from the US government. "Intel's ties to key businesses in China are typical for a high-tech firm," he said. As Intel and the US consider plans to increase manufacturing capacity at home, the company's China ties will loom large in the global chip race.

The White House wants to close a trade loophole exploited by Chinese discount e-retailers — a move that would have a ripple effect on at least two of our portfolio stocks: Amazon and Meta Platforms. The de minimis exemption has allowed Chinese e-commerce giants, particularly low-cost Temu and Shein, to flourish. Temu has risen in popularity in the U.S. for selling items directly from Chinese merchants at massive discounts. Temu is generally seen as a growing competitor to Amazon since its prices are often lower. Meta challenges On the other hand, the trade shift could present a challenge for Meta, which relies on advertising from e-commerce platforms.

South Korea-based Samsung Electronics has also been considering investing in building chip manufacturing facilities in the country in the coming years. The Gulf state has been ramping up efforts and investments in developing its domestic tech industry as it works to build its position as a global hub for advanced technology and artificial intelligence. However, the discussions with UAE officials are still in the early stages, the report said. A tug-of-war between the U.S. and China has played out in the region as tech deals speed up and Washington grows increasingly wary over Beijing's influence in the Gulf state. TSMC and Samsung have held discussions with U.S. officials who are worried about potential shipments of advanced AI chips coming from UAE-based plants to China.

While my lightbulb situation may be somewhat unique, experts say it is not uncommon to learn the cost of repairs is more than the cost to replace an appliance. Figuring out the cost for a repairMy first call to repair our microwave was to the appliance store where I made the purchase. Several states — including California, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota and New York — have implemented so-called "right to repair" laws. Some products designed 'with a hostility to repair'Consumer advocates say state laws and the FTC actions help, but haven't solved the problem.
