Scott Olson/Getty ImagesFormer President Donald Trump will be in attendance Monday in a New York courtroom for the start of the civil fraud trial against him, his eldest sons, their companies and Trump Organization executives. What's at stake at trial: Trump and his companies could be forced to pay hefty sums in damages for the profits they've allegedly garnered through their fraudulent business practices. The judge is expected to consider claims of business records fraud and insurance fraud alleged in the lawsuit in connection to high-profile properties, though he already determined some broad level of fraud was perpetuated. The six causes of action are falsifying business records, conspiracy to falsify business records, issuing false financial statements, conspiracy to falsify false financial statements, insurance fraud and conspiracy to commit insurance fraud. CNN —John Kelly, the longest-serving White House chief of staff for Donald Trump, offered his harshest criticism yet of the former president in an exclusive statement to CNN. Kelly set the record straight with on-the-record confirmation of a number of damning stories about statements Trump made behind closed doors attacking US service members and veterans, listing a number of objectionable comments Kelly witnessed Trump make firsthand. “A person that has no idea what America stands for and has no idea what America is all about. Then-candidate Trump of course said in front of a crowd in 2015 that former Vietnam POW Sen. John McCain, an Arizona Republican, was “not a war hero. Former President Donald Trump will skip the third Republican debate, once again snubbing his rivals as he holds a commanding lead in the polls for the GOP nomination. “He isn’t going,” Chris LaCivita, a Trump campaign senior adviser, confirmed to NBC News on Thursday. The next debate will be held in Miami on Nov. 8, a short drive from Trump’s Florida residence. Republican hopefuls debated without Trump for a second time on Wednesday night, with several candidates stepping up their attacks on the former president. Trump told the Daily Caller in an interview published Thursday that he would not attend the third debate and indicated Republicans should rally around him, declaring there is “not going to be a breakout candidate.”

REUTERS/Lindsay DeDario/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 28 (Reuters) - Donald Trump will not seek to move a criminal case alleging he conspired to reverse his 2020 presidential election loss in Georgia from state to federal court, his lawyers said on Thursday, a development that could simplify the former U.S. president's path to trial. Trump has denied wrongdoing and said the case is part of a political witch hunt. Trump, Meadows and 17 others were charged in a sprawling indictment in August. Trump has said the criminal case and three others he faces are part of a political plot aimed at preventing him from retaking the White House in next year's election.

CNN —Donald Trump will skip another Republican presidential debate on Wednesday night because no one will punish him for not being there. While getting away with it is the ex-president’s quintessential political skill, his talent for evading consequences is facing a grave challenge in another sphere – the courts. Since the first GOP debate last month in Wisconsin, Florida Gov. Yet it stirred barely a murmur from Trump’s GOP rivals. The ex-president’s political might within the GOP base means its leaders are loath to cross him.

The union is pushing for higher wages, shorter work weeks and assurances from the country’s top automakers that new electric vehicle jobs will be unionized. The dueling appearances reflect what will likely be a chief dynamic of the 2024 general election, which is increasingly looking like a rematch between Trump and Biden. Trump has tried to capitalize on the strike to drive a wedge between Biden and union workers, a constituency that helped pave the way for the ex-president’s surprise 2016 victory. While Biden has not implemented an electric vehicle mandate, he has set a goal that half of all new vehicle sales be electric by 2030. He’s set to hold a press conference to highlight Trump’s “false promises to blue collar and union workers in Michigan and across America.”___AP Auto Writer Tom Krisher in Van Buren Township, Michigan, contributed to this report.

REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 26 - Seven Republican candidates will take part in the second 2024 Republican presidential debate on Wednesday in California. FEWER CANDIDATES - AND NO TRUMP AGAINThe qualifying rules for the second debate are more stringent than the first last month, when eight candidates were on stage in Milwaukee. As he did in August, Trump will hold a rival event at the same time as the debate. Once the clear second-place candidate behind Trump, DeSantis' campaign has floundered as some other candidates closed the gap with him in recent polls. After Ramaswamy's pugnacious performance in the August debate, expect to see more attacks on him and his lack of experience, especially by Haley and Pence, both of whom had strong outings last month.

Striking United Auto Workers (UAW) union workers picket outside the Ford Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan, U.S., September 23, 2023. Striking auto workers say they would like to see more support from elected officials as they push to get companies to share more of the profits. Republicans believe Biden's push to electrify America's vehicle fleet, by pumping billions of dollars of tax rebates into EV manufacturing, is unpopular with auto workers. In Michigan, Trump will criticize Biden's economic policies and incentives promoting EVs and say he would do a better job of protecting blue-collar workers if elected to a second term, Miller added. Biden's Michigan visit represents the most support a sitting president has shown striking workers since Theodore Roosevelt invited striking coal workers to the White House in 1902, historians said.

Fulton County Superior Judge Scott McAfee hears motions from attorneys representing Kenneth Chesebro and Sidney Powell in Atlanta on Sept. 6, 2023. The identities of jurors for the Georgia election interference case of former President Donald Trump will be kept secret until the end of the trial, a judge ordered Monday. Those jurors "shall be identified by number only in court filings or in open court during the pendency of trial," Judge Scott McAfee wrote in the ruling in Fulton County Superior Court in Atlanta. Parties in the case are barred from disclosing the names, addresses, telephone numbers or identifying employment information of the jury or any prospective jurors, McAfee wrote. The judge's ruling follows violent threats made against officials in Fulton County, which prompted an FBI investigation.

Former President Donald Trump will travel to the battleground state of Michigan next week to meet with striking autoworkers instead of participating in the second Republican presidential debate, a person familiar with his plans said Monday. That’s the date others in the GOP field will gather at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, for the cycle’s second primary debate. On Monday, the United Auto Workers and Detroit’s Big Three carmakers resumed talks aimed at ending a strike now in its fourth day. Stellantis described the discussion as “constructive.” A spokesperson for General Motors said representatives of the company and the United Auto Workers were continuing to negotiate. Trump earlier this summer traveled to Michigan, where the Oakland County GOP honored him as its Man of the Decade.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump will skip the second Republican presidential primary debate in California next week and instead will travel to Detroit to deliver a speech to an audience that will include current and former union members, according to a source familiar with his plans. His prime-time remarks will serve as counterprogramming to the September 27 debate at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley. Trump, who has maintained a large lead in national and early-state primary polls, also skipped the first GOP primary debate in Milwaukee last month. “Why would I do it?”Like the first debate, Republican candidates must meet certain donor and polling thresholds to make the Simi Valley debate stage. They will need at least 3% in two national polls or in one national poll and two polls from separate early-voting states – Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina or Nevada.

Former President Donald Trump will not head to trial next month alongside two of his co-defendants whose prosecutions in the sweeping Georgia election interference case were severed by a judge Thursday. But McAfee declined an effort by Chesebro and Powell to separate their cases from each other, meaning they are both set to head to the same trial on Oct. 23. The ruling is a blow to Georgia prosecutors who wanted to keep all 19 co-defendants together in the case. McAfee wrote in his order that severing Chesebro and Powell was "simply a procedural and logistical inevitability." "The Fulton County Courthouse simply contains no courtroom adequately large enough to hold all 19 defendants, their multiple attorneys and support staff, the sheriff's deputies, court personnel, and the State's prosecutorial team," McAfee wrote.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump will be restricted on how and when he can look at, and talk about, classified information, a judge decided Wednesday after a sealed hearing the day before. The development is one of the first times the court has set terms around classified information in a case where Trump’s team has tried to downplay the seriousness of how records were handled. Cannon held a sealed hearing about the handling of classified information in the case on Tuesday in South Florida, according to multiple sources familiar with the proceeding. But the judge said the SCIF areas would be overseen by a third-party officer from the federal government designated to guide the handling of the classified information in the federal case. Cannon’s order on Wednesday also specifies that apparently classified information in the case that hasn’t clearly been identified as being declassified should be treated with sensitivity.

Trump will wade into one of the state's largest sports crowds at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, where Iowa State University will host the University of Iowa. Trump remains far ahead of DeSantis and other rivals in Iowa and nationally. Trump has made a habit of visiting Iowa on the same day as DeSantis, whom Trump treats as his main threat. Clinton also attended party events with her lesser-known rivals to demonstrate her willingness to undergo the rigor that Iowans typically demand.

Trump will join the South Dakota Republican Party for a “Monumental Leaders Rally” in Rapid City. South Dakota holds a late primary and isn't competitive in a general election. CNN —A federal judge ruled that the jury hearing E. Jean Carroll’s defamation lawsuit will only need to decide how much money Donald Trump will have to pay her, after the judge found the former president was liable for making defamatory statements. Judge Lewis Kaplan said that a federal jury’s verdict earlier this year against Trump will carry over to the defamation case set to go to trial in January involving statements Trump made in 2019 about Carroll’s sexual assault allegations. “The truth or falsity of Mr Trump’s 2019 statements therefore depends – like the truth or falsity of his 2022 statement – on whether Ms Carroll lied about Mr Trump sexually assaulting her,” the judge ruled Wednesday. “The jury’s finding that she did not therefore is binding in this case and precludes Mr Trump from contesting the falsity of his 2019 statements.”Kaplan ruled the trial set for January 15 will be limited to damages. Although her initial lawsuit was filed in 2019, the judge previously allowed Carroll to include comments Trump made at a CNN town hall earlier this year.
