Apple ticks lower after warning of dull holiday quarter

Nov 3 (Reuters) - Apple shares on Friday pared losses that were driven by its forecast for a subdued holiday quarter after a U.S. jobs report bolstered hopes of a pause in interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve. The iPhone maker on Thursday forecast sales for the holiday quarter, usually its biggest, below Wall Street estimates, blaming weak demand for iPads and wearables. An Apple iPhone 12 is pictured in a mobile phone store in Nantes, France, Sept. 13, 2023. "We view management's flat sales guidance as proof the company cannot rely on iPhone sales to drive shares higher, as it has in the past," D.A. Apple tumbles after warning of dull holiday quarter

Nov 3 (Reuters) - Apple fell 3% on Friday after it disappointed Wall Street with a forecast that indicated growth will stay subdued in the quarter where the holiday season usually drives its strongest sales. The iPhone maker on Thursday predicted quarterly sales that were below market estimates, blaming weak demand for iPads and wearables, especially in key market China. "We view management's flat sales guidance as proof the company cannot rely on iPhone sales to drive shares higher, as it has in the past," D.A. "In mainland China, we set a quarterly record for the September quarter for iPhone," Cook told Reuters. He was also positive on the outlook for the services business, whose strong growth in the September quarter had helped the company top quarterly revenue expectations.

When looking for a wedding venue in 2022, nothing felt right. “My dad jokingly was like, ‘What about Everest?’” Ms. O’Reilly, 26, said. “We really wanted something that would challenge us and represent our love for each other” said Mr. O’Reilly, an accountant at Deloitte.

According to BMI analysts, about two-thirds of Chinese medical devices used by local hospitals and clinics are imported from Western groups. That implies a direct hit to the order and revenue growth for medical device firms. Domestic brands, which have historically lagged in the advanced end of the medical device market, took the whole of last decade just to hike their share from around 20% to 30%, Deloitte says.

[1/2] People sit and work on their laptops at Deloitte's office in Gurugram, India, June 13, 2023. On Aug. 3, India imposed a licensing regime on laptops and tablet imports, but quickly deferred the decision following criticism from industry and Washington. India's electronics and software imports, which include laptops, tablets and personal computers, stood at $33.6 billion in the April to August period, up nearly 8% from last year. India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) said it "extends its profound appreciation towards the government's recent decision to maintain restriction-free imports of laptops and tablets." Further measures could be taken after September 2024 on the basis of the data collected, Krishnan told a press conference.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. announced sanctions on Wednesday against a group of 10 Hamas members and the Palestinian militant organization's financial network across Gaza, Sudan, Turkey, Algeria and Qatar as it responds to the surprise attack on Israel that left more than 1,000 people dead or kidnapped. President Joe Biden, who arrived in the Middle East late Tuesday to show support for Israel, has tried to tamp down tensions in the escalating war between Israel and Hamas, but those efforts have faced massive setbacks, including a deadly explosion at a Gaza hospital that killed about 500 people. Targeted for Wednesday's sanctions action by the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control are members who manage a Hamas investment portfolio, a Qatar-based financial facilitator with close ties to the Iranian regime, a key Hamas commander and a Gaza-based virtual currency exchange. “Enough is enough,” Deif, who does not appear in public, said in the recorded message. He said the attack was only the start of what he called Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, and he called on Palestinians from east Jerusalem to northern Israel to join the fight.

These showed that a rise in fuel prices between August and September put upward pressure on the annual CPI rate, which economists had expected to drop to 6.6%. "Progress in bringing inflation down is proving slow, with the UK generating higher levels of inflation than any other major industrialised nation," said Ian Stewart, chief economist at accountancy firm Deloitte. "The persistence of underlying inflation, and service price pressures, suggests that interest rates are likely to stay close to current levels for much of the next year," he added. Services price inflation - another CPI component the BoE studies - rose to 6.9% in September from 6.8%. British consumer price inflation remains the highest in the Group of Seven advanced nations, with France and Italy the nearest with rates of 5.7% and 5.6% respectively for September.

New York CNN —Spending on the holiday season is expected to rebound to – and even surpass – pre-pandemic levels this year for the first time. The year-end months of November and December typically are dominated by shoppers scouring stores for deals and discounts on seasonal merchandise, including gifts. “As many as 82% of shoppers said they plan to spend on non-gift purchases such as decorations. While gift spending is still expected to grow 9% over last year, the report said people plan to buy one fewer gift versus last year. “In terms of the allocation of holiday dollars, the biggest increase that we saw is in the non-gift group,” said Skelly.

A similar proportion said debt sales were unattractive while equity finance became more popular. "Higher interest rates have flipped a decade-old consensus which was previously in favour of debt finance," Ian Stewart, chief economist at Deloitte, said. "Finance leaders are preparing for a period of high interest rates with predicted rates falling only slightly over the next year." The Bank of England raised rates 14 times in a row between December 2021 and August this year, before pausing its increases in September. The Financial Reporting Council (FRC) said the number, range, and seriousness of the deficiencies in the audits of Carillion were exceptional, resulting in the watchdog's highest ever fine. On occasions, KPMG audit partner Peter Meehan told his team to record his review of working papers without having done a review, the FRC said. Meehan, no longer with KPMG, was fined 350,000 pounds after a discount to reflect his cooperation and admission of failures. It would have been 30 million pounds, but was discounted due to admissions and co-operation by the auditor. KPMG was fined 14.4 million pounds last year after providing false and misleading information to the FRC during spot checks on audits of Carillion and outsourcing firm Regenersis.
