I was at my mom’s house in the suburbs when I watched Barry Keoghan make love to his bestie’s grave in Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn.”“Promising Young Woman,” Fennell’s previous film, a rape-revenge thriller for the girlboss generation, was a toothless bid at provocation. “Saltburn” seemed to promise a similar blend of all style, no substance, but the online hype had piqued my curiosity. So, there I was, watching Keoghan as an Oxford student named Oliver become one with the soil, my mother snoozing beside me. The moment brought back memories from adolescence of the dozens of times she’d walk into my teenage bedroom — or the same living room where I was watching “Saltburn” — to find me slack-jawed in the middle of “Basic Instinct” or “A Clockwork Orange.” Naturally, she always seemed to waltz in during the most morally compromised or sexually bewildering scenes.

CNN —Oscar nominee Da’Vine Joy Randolph continued her award season sweep when she won a supporting actress trophy for “The Holdovers” at the 2024 BAFTA Awards on Sunday. Randolph previously won a Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award for her performance in the 2023 dramedy. She is also nominated for an Oscar and Screen Actors Guild Award, the ceremonies of which will be held in the coming weeks. During her acceptance speech at the BAFTAs, Randolph got emotional while speaking about how meaningful it was to play her character Mary Lamb in the Alexander Payne-directed film. “I knew…that Mary was a character that was so much bigger than me,” Randolph said while on stage clutching her statuette.

Christopher Nolan's quirks as a director are well known, from the absence of chairs on his sets to his refusal to use a smartphone or email. Robert Downey Jr., who appeared in Nolan's historical epic "Oppenheimer" this past summer, says the 53-year-old director has a very specific quality that makes him a great leader. "He won't ask anyone to do anything that he's not a thousand percent willing to do himself, twice as hard," Downey Jr. told Variety in a joint interview with costars Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt last month. A Nolan set, Murphy said, can feel "a bit like a private, intimate laboratory," something he appreciates as a performer. "Oppenheimer" earned 13 nominations at next month's Oscars, including acting nods for Murphy, Downey Jr. and Blunt, as well as Best Director for Nolan.

Famed sex and relationships therapist Esther Perel shared how to ask better questions. Esther Perel, a famed sex and relationships therapist and podcast host , told Business Insider that common first date questions like “What do you do?” and “Do you like your job?” are recipes for tedium. Ask questions that invite storiesPerel believes the best first date questions prompt the other person to tell a story — especially if it’s one they didn’t expect to tell. AdvertisementOne way to do that is to ask and answer questions that don’t make you out to be perfect. From the questions you ask to the activity you do, a date should be “a story that unfolds,” Perel said.

There are a lot of pros to dating single parents, and I know because I am one. Single parents can be more understanding of situations and most easily roll with the punches because they've seen it all. Many single parents have also done a lot of personal development, like therapy, which I think is a huge bonus to a relationship. If you're not able to confidently tell a date you're a parent, you're probably pursuing the wrong type of relationship. Single parents need to be more flexible with the idea that not everyone will have the same life experience as them.

Getting into the right mindset for Valentine’s Day
  + stars: | 2024-02-14 | by ( Ian Kerner | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
No matter your view on the topic, Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to put sex on the calendar, but don’t just focus on the act itself at the end of the evening. I’m not telling you to rearrange your entire day for sex, but to make small intentional choices that are pro-sex. That’s why my Valentine’s Day advice for you is not to just have sex. It’s Valentine’s Day, so come up with a sexy prize for each win and a naughty consequence for each loss. Don’t forget your kidsMany teens also feel pressure around Valentine’s Day — to be in a couple, find a date or have sex (whether or not they’re feeling ready).

The near-absence of laws criminalizing the practice of fertility fraud until recently means no doctors have yet been criminally charged for the behavior. In 2019, Indiana became the second state, more than 20 years after California, to pass a statute making fertility fraud a felony. He added some of his biological children have “expressed gratitude for their existence” to him and even sent him photos of their own children. Cline’s case spurred lawmakers to pass legislation that outlawed fertility fraud but wasn’t retroactive, meaning he was never prosecuted for it. “In fertility fraud, no parent is saying that – no parent is saying I would have gotten an abortion,” she said.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Children and grandchildren of former U.S. Sen. Jean Carnahan of Missouri recalled her wit, curiosity, kindness and hard work during a public memorial service on Saturday. Carnahan, 90, died Jan. 30 in hospice care in suburban St. Louis after a short illness. “In the last few days, as if preparing to be shot out of the cannon, Mom told us, ‘I’m ready to blast out,’” one of her sons, Russ Carnahan, said to hundreds gathered at The Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. Another son, Tim Carnahan, told mourners that he has realized recently how much he wants to emulate his mother. “It means showing the world who you are by what you do and then doing it with passion.

We’re growing some teeth as to what can be done with AI, but we also see where there’s progress, there’s attack. One of the things I like to point out with AI systems is that if your AI systems fail on people of color, you don’t have a robust system. If your AI doesn’t work on the global majority, if your AI doesn’t work for women, if your AI doesn’t work for people with disabilities, once you start expanding all of the areas we’re talking about, it comes to your AI doesn’t work for humanity. To me, that’s a proactive approach of saying, how do we build consumer AI technology in a way that’s more ethical? I was talking to Sam Altman about the climate impact of AI, especially these large language models and generative AI systems.

Or try something less invasive that would not "cure" my cancer but allow me to enjoy the summer with my two young kids? I'd first been diagnosed with Stage 3 bladder cancer in mid-2020. Bladder removal — the medical term is cystectomy, and about 25% of bladder cancer patients end up undergoing this procedure — means living with a "diversion," a kind of tube that routes urine out of your body. I didn't want to be the sick dad who couldn't show up to ball games and chorus concerts, who couldn't go on hikes or bike rides. As a journalist, I had no fear of calling up random doctors who were practicing a newer technique called "bladder preservation," even in complex cases of bladder cancer, as mine was, using combinations of drugs and surveillance.

His dominance in the polls and at the polls this year make clear the will of the people: They want Mr. Trump to be No. Hence the curiosity: Who does Mr. Trump want to be his No. As a congressman representing Indiana, Mr. Pence had worked in Washington for 12 years, but never became Washington. Talk has turned to whether Mr. Trump should choose an insider or an outsider, a man or a woman, a legislator or an executive. Yet I think the most important vice-presidential selection question for Mr. Trump is less “who?” than “why?” In other words, the individual should complement, not complicate, his America First record and vision, and recognize the difference between loyalty-as-tenacity (yes) and loyalty-as-obsequiousness (no).

I had Black friends, White friends, Asian friends, Hispanic friends and mixed-race friends. But I didn’t think of them as “Black,” “White,” “Hispanic” and “mixed race.” I thought of them as Rodney, Stephen, Javier and Jordan. Where my White friends had the wind of White supremacy at their backs, I faced a headwind. I huddled with the Black kids in one corner of the room, and watched as the White kids, Hispanic kids and Asian kids awkwardly shuffled to their respective corners. Why were Black students in one of the most progressive, non-racist environments on Earth claiming to experience racism all the time?

Before I got pregnant, I'd never heard about mom rage. I want to speak out about mom rage to push back on that stigma. As parents, we want so many things for our children — good health, success, happy relationships, and purpose in life. One thing we can do to try to guarantee these things is to help them develop emotional intelligence skills, which are key predictors for happiness and success. As a conscious parenting researcher and coach, I've studied the behaviors of over 200 kids, and I've found that those with high emotional intelligence do six key things:1. They are adaptableA child capable of smoothly navigating changes in routines, or handling disappointing news with calmness, is showing emotional maturity. How to build this skill: When your child has a story to tell, give them your full attention.

Some tech executives, celebrities such as Jennifer Garner and parents from all walks of life have resorted to banning their kids from social media altogether. Social media platforms that cater to children have added an ever-growing array of parental controls as they face increasing scrutiny over child safety.
