Bitcoin rallied on Thursday, but if trading this year is any guide, this pop will be one to fade. Bitcoin is down 13% from its March 13 record and ether has tumbled 34% in the same period. With a year-to-date gain of 50%, bitcoin is considered to be in a bull cycle that began in March 2023. The most recent Bitcoin halving took place in April, and the post-halving highs historically don't come until about 18 months after the supply cutting event . Between the popularity of bitcoin ETFs that launched in January, the slowing of the bitcoin supply and a slew of other macro and micro catalysts, many traders are holding out for a price surge.

CNN first reported on the US law enforcement action. Ivanov and Shakhmametov are accused of helping run “carding” websites like Joker’s Stash that sell stolen credit and debit card information. The sites have advertised financial information stolen from tens of millions of Americans, according to US law enforcement. For years, Joker’s Stash was a dominant player in the Russian-speaking criminal underground. After US and European law enforcement agencies seized some computer servers used by Joker’s Stash, the forum said it was shutting down in 2021.

The GOP nominee announced his latest branded merchandise, Trump Watches, on social media Thursday – 40 days before the election and on a day when he did not appear on the campaign trail. A disclaimer on the website discloses that neither Trump nor his company designed, manufactured, distributed or sold the watches. Rather, a company named “TheBestWatchesOnEarth LLC” licensed the Trump name to sell the line of wrist watches. This week, he also launched “Trump Coins” – a 1oz .999% silver medallion with the former president’s face on one side and his signature on the White House on the back. Like the watches, the Trump Coins are the result of another licensing deal.

Analysts are warning that Coinbase could be entering a down trend after the stock scored a six-day-long advance. In early trading Wednesday, Coinbase rose as much as 1.3%, paving the way for what may be its seventh straight gain. "Coinbase looks very toppy to me as the recent bounce out of the oversold condition looks to be stalling out," Wolfe Research macro strategist Rob Ginsberg told CNBC. Lau also cited muted trading volume on crypto exchanges and pressure on subscription and services revenue due to the declining interest rate outlook. But cryptocurrency "trading volume could jump" when interest rates move even lower and if bitcoin again challenges its all-time high, Lau noted.

Ellison, 29, accepted a plea deal to charges of conspiracy and financial fraud in December 2022, a month after FTX spiraled into bankruptcy. Bankman-Fried was convicted of all seven criminal fraud charges against him and sentenced to 25 years in prison. Sean “Diddy” Combs has been moved to a section of the New York City jail where convicted cryptocurrency fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried is being held, sources confirm to NBC News. The area of the detention center is reserved for detainees who require special protection, three sources familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. Combs, 54, was arrested last week and is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, a federal jail that has a notorious reputation for violence and poor care. Bankman-Fried, known as SBF, was convicted in November and was sentenced in March to 25 years in federal prison. Combs has not been convicted and has pleaded not guilty, but a federal judge on Sept. 17 ordered that he be held in jail pending trial.

Advertisement"She had a crush on him from the beginning," Sahni told the judge in the sentencing hearing. Defense lawyers also had requested a no-prison sentence for Ellison, who had run Alameda Research , a hedge fund connected to FTX. Kaplan allowed Ellison to remain free on bail until she surrenders to prison either on or after Nov. 7. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison in March and also was ordered to pay $11 billion in forfeiture by Kaplan. On Tuesday, before sentencing Ellison, Kaplan contrasted her conduct after she was charged with that of Bankman-Fried. Both Bankman-Fried and Ellison had faced the same statutory maximum sentence of about 110 years in prison for their crimes.

Read previewOn Tuesday, a judge will decide what sentence to give Caroline Ellison, who pleaded guilty to conspiring with Sam Bankman-Fried in an $11 billion fraud scheme. Ellison's sentencing sets up a high-stakes balancing test. She still participated in a massive fraud scheme, after all, the value of which he put at $11 billion. Ellison was the SBF trial's star witnessEllison pleaded guilty to fraud and money laundering for her role in the FTX scandal. Because the Bankman-Fried case went to trial, Kaplan has a lot of information at his disposal when deciding Ellison's sentence.

The Bank of Japan left interest rates unchanged last week and indicated it was not in a hurry to hike them again. That decision, coming just days after the Fed's 50 basis points rate cut, put a pause to the yen's sharp gains this month. With Japan closed for Autumnal Equinox Day, the main driver of trade was expectations around further Fed rate cuts and the gains those have spurred in equities, commodity currencies and other risk assets. The Fed's rate cut "appears to have calmed market fears of a U.S. recession", Goldman Sachs said in a note. Meanwhile, the majority of economists polled by Reuters anticipate two more 25 bps rate cuts at the Fed's final two meetings this year.

A Miami man is facing charges after authorities said he teamed up with a California man in a scam to steal and launder over $230 million in cryptocurrency. It appears the arrest is connected with an FBI raid of a waterfront home in the area of Northeast 83rd Street and N. Bayshore Drive. After they fraudulently gained access to victims’ cryptocurrency accounts, they transferred the funds into their possession and laundered the proceeds, authorities said. Lam and Serrano spent the laundered cryptocurrency proceeds on international travel, partying in nightclubs, luxury automobiles, watches, jewelry, designer handbags, and rental homes in Los Angeles and Miami, authorities said. Prosecutors said the investigation into the scam is ongoing.

CNN —Described as “disgusting” with “horrifying” conditions, the detention center music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs now calls home is a far cry from the Miami and Los Angeles mansions he once lived in. A federal judge denied Combs bail Wednesday saying the bail proposal set forth by his defense attorneys was “insufficient” in addressing the court’s concerns. This after the Federal Bureau of Prisons shuttered its Manhattan complex shortly after multimillionaire financier and accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein died by suicide in 2019. A month later, inmate Edwin Cordero died in a fight that broke out inside the prison. The incident prompted a Justice Department investigation assessing whether the Bureau of Prisons had “adequate contingency plans” to address inmate living conditions.
