Americans used to think of China as a place to do business, and Latin America as a place to vacation. More recently, our neighbors to the south are seen as the source of desperate migrants. I saw evidence of that in Costa Rica, a stable democracy that is vying to become the Silicon Valley of Latin America — with active support from the United States. More than 40 percent of the chips the U.S. Department of Defense uses for weapons systems and infrastructure rely on Chinese suppliers. More than 90 percent of all advanced chips are produced in Taiwan, a self-governing island claimed by China.

For all of the counterterrorism wins that the United States has had in its fight against the Islamic State — and there have been many — we still have not figured out how to defeat it. It served as the latest deadly reminder that the Islamic State — and particularly its Khorasan branch, ISIS-K, which is active in Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan — remains a potent threat. Several ISIS-K plots in Europe have been disrupted, with arrests in Austria, France, Germany and the Netherlands. All of these events point to what we now know: Stripping the Islamic State of its self-proclaimed caliphate is not the same as beating it. Forced from this redoubt, ISIS has reconstituted itself in other countries, going underground in less detectable — but more dangerous — forms.

Pope Francis skipped the traditional Good Friday procession at Rome's Colosseum to protect his health, the Vatican said, making a last-minute decision that added to concerns about his frail condition during a particularly busy period. But just as the event was about to begin, the Vatican announced that Francis was following the event from his home at the Vatican. Brian Hopp, a visitor from Chicago, noted that Francis has had his health challenges this year. I think a lot was taken into it and I think he probably prioritized his health for Easter, which I think is a very responsible thing to do," Hopp said. On Thursday, he left the Vatican to preside over the Holy Thursday foot-washing ritual at a Rome women's prison.

CNN —Romance was in the air at London’s St. Pancras station on Tuesday, and not just because burgeoning power couple Dua Lipa and actor Callum Turner were spotted returning from a trip to Paris. Beyond their similar leather jackets, there was something nostalgic, even sentimental about their looks. Turner wheeled a silver Rimowa cabin case decked out with a smorgasbord of luggage stickers. The fashion for luggage patches began around the 1900s — they were typically offered by grand, palatial hotels. “In this age of nostalgia… I say bring back the travel sticker,” wrote the New York Times in 1971, insisting that the colorful decorations are key to evoking pleasant memories and standing out from the crowd.

But Stephenson harbored a secret: About two decades earlier, he had shot andkilled a man he met at a bar in Kansas City. Oliphant’s body was found two months later in some woods in rural Benton County, Missouri, about 100 miles southeast of Kansas City. In his confession to his husband, Stephenson told him he later remodeled the bathroom to mask the crime scene and conceal evidence. Investigators interviewed Stephenson in 1998 and he admitted to taking an “unknown male” to his home in Kansas City. Ginejko told police he tried to research the Missouri killingafter his husband’s confession but there was little information available online.

Marine insurance companies will be on the hook for much of the costs. These insurance companies are backed by insurance companies of their own – a type of business known as a reinsurer. The potential cost of insurance claims from the bridge collapse could be between $1 billion and $3 billion, analysts at Barclays wrote in a note Wednesday. “But other than that, the economic impact of what has happened will be enormous, but not recoverable from the ship,” Davies said. Maryland lawmakers, meanwhile, are drafting an emergency bill to provide income replacement for Port of Baltimore workers impacted by the bridge collapse.

It might not have happened if the cookies and brownies didn't taste so good, much to the investors' surprise. "They're free from dairy, eggs, gluten, soy, refined sugar, sugar alcohols and are paleo-friendly," Saphira said on the show, noting that the idea originated as a solution for her own dietary restrictions. CNN —A giant blueberry that tips the scales at a whopping 20.4 grams (0.71 ounces) officially entered the record books this week. The fruit was picked on November 13 and the record for heaviest blueberry was confirmed this week, a spokesperson for Guinness World Records told CNN on Friday. It was grown in Corindi, New South Wales, Australia, by staff at blueberry grower Costa Group. The previous record for heaviest blueberry was held by a 16.20-gram (0.57-ounce) berry grown in Western Australia in 2020, according to Costa, which develops new varieties of blueberries that can be grown in different conditions. And in August 2019 a monster grapefruit broke two records and became the world’s heaviest and largest grapefruit by circumference.

Emirates Stadium, London CNN —If Arsenal fans had forgotten just how tense and grueling the Champions League knockout stages can be, their memories will now certainly be refreshed after a thrilling 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Porto in the round of 16. On a raucous night, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said this was probably the best atmosphere he’d experienced at the Emirates Stadium since taking over as manager in 2019. It was a reminder of the threat this Porto team possessed – if Arsenal still needed one after Galeno’s late, long-range sucker punch in the first leg. That strike propelled Arsenal forward in the second half, though Porto looked increasingly content with sitting back and absorbing the pressure. The centre-left Socialist Party (PS) won 77 seats, down sharply from its absolute majority of 120 in the previous legislature, after the resignation of Socialist Prime Minister Antonio Costa amid a corruption investigation. Failure to approve a budget usually means the government's collapse and a new election. Portugal's constitution sets out that a new general election cannot happen earlier than six months after a new legislature first convenes, nor in the six months before a presidential election, which is due in January 2026. AD'S POLICY PROPOSALSThe newly-formed AD is led by the centre-right Social Democratic Party (PSD) - the Socialists' main traditional rival. Investors do not expect much divergence from established fiscal prudence and economic growth from an AD government.

Portugal Votes in a Tight Race With a Hard-Right Surge
  + stars: | 2024-03-10 | by ( Emma Bubola | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
When António Costa, a prime minister well liked by European leaders, handily won his third term as prime minister in 2022, many Portuguese prepared for a lasting, stable government given his Socialist Party’s strong majority in Parliament. But by late last year, Mr. Costa had resigned, his government embroiled in a corruption investigation involving lithium exploration concessions. On Sunday, Portugal faces a new election. It has raised the prospect that the Socialist Party could lose power for the first time in more than eight years, as well as the possibility of an unstable minority government. One of the most significant changes in the election campaign has been the rise of a hard-right populist party.

Opinion SoleAuthority Forty-five feet underground in a command center near Omaha, there’s an encrypted communications line that goes directly to the American president. Buried below is a military command headquarters constructed in case of a missile attack amid a national emergency. Yet regardless of who wins this election, or the next one, the American president’s nuclear sole authority is a product of another era and must be revisited in our new nuclear age. The jet’s crew can contact the president, verify his or her identity and relay a nuclear attack order to bomber squadrons, submarines and intercontinental ballistic missile silos. It is, however, unacceptable for an American president to have the sole authority to launch a nuclear first strike without a requirement for consultation or consensus.
