Her advice for managing stress includes setting clear boundaries and communicating your needs. Through therapy and mindfulness, I cultivated a healthier relationship with work, boundaries, and my personal identity. I also saw there was a clear need for workplace mental-health education that felt science-backed, actionable, and relatable to busy professionals, which led me to a career pivot. The European Commission is readying a statement of objections to send to the companies in the coming days, the people said. Such documents or charge sheets set out the EU competition watchdog's concerns on why deals could be anti-competitive. The Commission and Adobe, which can offer remedies to stave off the EU warning, declined to comment. If you have ever wondered what it might feel like to be sucked into a black hole — twisted, stretched, confused, doomed — you could do worse than trip through “The Warped Side of Our Universe, An Odyssey Through Black Holes, Wormholes, Time Travel and Gravitational Waves,” a collaborative book project by Kip Thorne, a physicist at the California Institute of Technology, and Lia Halloran, a visual artist and chair of the art department at Chapman University in Orange, Calif.Dr. Thorne brings impressive credentials to the task. In 2017 he won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the Laser Interferometry Gravitational-Wave Observatory, or LIGO, which discovered space-time vibrations resulting from the collision of two distant black holes. He was also the executive producer of the movie “Interstellar.” Ms. Halloran, who grew up surfing and skateboarding in the Bay Area, became obsessed with science after a high school internship at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. The book consists of illustrations of what Dr. Thorne likes to call the “space-time storms” predicted by general relativity, Einstein’s theory of gravity, alternating with his own explanations of the physics, which appear in verse. Many of the illustrations, which are in ink on drafting film, portray Ms. Halloran’s wife, Felicia, being whipped around, crushed and twisted by the forces of nature.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Biden administration officials hosted big city mayors at the White House on Thursday to discuss how to manage a growing number of migrants, one day after those leaders sent a letter asking for more federal help. Denver Mayor Mike Johnston and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson met with White House chief of staff Jeff Zients and Homeland Security Department officials before heading to Capitol Hill for meetings with lawmakers. If they could work, the cities would require less federal aid to help house them. “I think they seem receptive,” Johnston said of federal officials. It's unclear whether House Republicans will fund any of Biden's request for help for the cities.

Many civil society leaders told CNBC the order does not go far enough to recognize and address real-world harms that stem from AI models — especially those affecting marginalized communities. "One of the thrusts of the executive order is definitely that 'AI can improve governmental administration, make our lives better and we don't want to stand in way of innovation,'" Venzke told CNBC. Mitchell wished she had seen "foresight" approaches highlighted in the executive order, such as disaggregated evaluation approaches, which can analyze a model as data is scaled up. Even experts who praised the executive order's scope believe the work will be incomplete without action from Congress. For example, it seeks to work within existing immigration law to make it easier to retain high-skilled AI workers in the U.S.

Summer Science Program, a nonprofit with an annual budget of about $2 million, sent about 200 high school juniors to six-week intensive research courses at universities this year. Summer Science Program learned last year that one of its alumni, Franklin Antonio, a co-founder of chipmaker Qualcomm, had granted the organization 20% of his estate, said CEO Frank Steslow. The program intends to double the number of students enrolled next summer to more than 400 and increased its annual budget to over $7 million. Summer Science Program has already received a first payment of $65 million, and the funds are unrestricted. But he added, “it seems unusual at first until you realize that the organization itself is almost like a gift restriction, because they’re very specific in what they do,” referring to Summer Science Program.

President Biden just signed an executive order regarding the development and use of AI technology. The broad executive order touches on more than a dozen possible uses of AI and generative AI that already are, or could in the future, directly impact people's lives. The size threshold is so high that currently most available models do not meet the criteria for further transparency called for in Biden's executive order. Although all of the major tech companies earlier this year agreed to adhere to standards of responsibility and training in their AI work. Do you think AI is in a hype cycle, and everybody's overreacting to what it's going to mean?

Just last week, he was giving “pointers” to some of our very seasoned directors, who in turn complained to me. So I have to ask, is there a professional way to tell someone they are too arrogant about their role within a company? I’m all for collaborative work environments, mentoring younger colleagues, and encouraging people to pursue their ambitions for advancement. This new policy feels like they don’t trust us, and it seems overkill to have to check in daily. Corporations often create busywork for one reason or another, and maybe they don’t trust you, but why do you care?
