The Bodily Indignities of the Space Life

But the space-based medical science needed to make that possible has been hindered by small sample sizes that aren’t representative of the general population. As less-rigorous medical screening allows more tourists to reach space, the chances increase significantly that someone will get hurt or have a health emergency there. And if we survived those perils, wouldn’t escalating pressure in our skulls kill us after a week or so? Initially, many space travelers puke, or at least feel motion-sick — space-adaptation syndrome, or S.A.S., is what such nausea, headache and vomiting are called outside our atmosphere. symptoms in the 1970s, when they heard Skylab astronauts talking about it with one another over a hot mic.

The only founders who do it successfully share one trait in common: the resilience to navigate a rocky path filled with unforeseen twists and turns. That's a key lesson that Catalina Daniels and James Sherman took from researching for their new book, "Smart Startups: What Every Entrepreneur Needs to Know — Advice from 18 Harvard Business School Founders." "Having resilience is absolutely essential [for] the emotional makeup of a person in terms of becoming an entrepreneur," Sherman tells CNBC Make It. "If they don't have that type of resilience, they need to learn how to build it up." In fact, every founder the authors spoke to agreed that resilience was the biggest key to their success, even more than prior experience or a winning business idea.

He encouraged Jess Baldock to buy a plot of land, sight unseen, in the beachside village of Kerewe, which is surrounded by mangroves and waterfalls. "The only time we left the site was on everyone's lunch break or after work," Jess Baldock said. While executive stock sales — such as Dimon's planned transactions next year — are not universally red flags, they can get complicated. Insider stock sales Executive stock trades are usually disclosed through SEC filings known as Form 4 documents and accessible through the regulator's EDGAR database — the electronic data gathering, analysis, and retrieval system. Rule 10b5-1 trading plans came into the fold just over two decades ago to reconcile these two discordant facts. Adopting Rule 10b5-1 trading plans gives public-company executives a way to protect against allegations of illegal insider trading in the future. Compared with a tiny stock sale executed through a predetermined plan, executive stock buys generally send a much stronger signal: The executive wants to make money, too.

Inflation in the United States has unquestionably cooled after hitting 40-year highs last year. Other key inflation gauges, the more comprehensive Personal Consumption Expenditures price index and the wholesale-focused Producer Price Index, have moderated as well. A spike in gas prices and other components such as persistently high shelter costs have kept inflation elevated. As a 25-year-old junior executive at the car company that bears his last name, William Clay Ford Jr. had a bracing introduction to labor negotiations when a union official demanded that he stand up and vouch that he was made of the same stuff as his great-grandfather Henry Ford. Mr. Ford, now the company’s executive chairman, harked back to the moment in an interview this week about how he and his company are navigating one of their most difficult labor negotiations in decades. The United Automobile Workers union has shut down three Ford plants, including its largest, and other plants and distribution centers at General Motors and Stellantis, which owns Chrysler. He has referred to the companies as “the enemy,” and has said the union is fighting “corporate greed” and standing up to the “billionaire class.”In a speech this week, Mr. Ford said the strikes were helping nonunion automakers like Tesla, Toyota and Honda. Mr. Fain responded that workers at those companies were future U.A.W.

Now it's: How much of a raise can I expect in 2024 if I stay in my current job? Sure — but it may wind up being the biggest boost in purchasing power that workers have gotten in years. If you think you deserve a raise that's higher than the 4% average, pay experts have a few tips. These days, as the hiring frenzy subsides, you're not as likely to get a bigger raise simply by switching companies. Which means that 2024 may be your last, best hope for landing an above-average raise — perhaps for years to come.

In the meantime, House Republicans have no clear leader heading into next year's election as they cling to a razor-thin majority. The leadership fund will shift its alignment to follow the new House speaker once one is elected. McCarthy visiting a district could often be a major draw, juicing fundraiser proceeds, though that’s a role any new House speaker can grow into. “That’s where McCarthy has crushed it,” said Cam Savage, a longtime Republican strategist who works on House races. “After this week’s chaotic episode, House Republicans have basically upgraded to a Disney fast-pass in their never-ending roller coaster ride to the radical right,” said Viet Shelton, a spokesman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the party’s House campaign arm.
