Florida had the biggest net gain of high-earning households, according to a recent SmartAsset study . Using $200,000 of adjusted gross income as a threshold, the study examined the number of high-income households moving into and out of each state to determine the net inflow. More high-income households have left California and New York than moved in, but some states saw the opposite. "I would say that's a little unique, that these smaller-population states are really pulling their weight in attracting or pulling above their weight in attracting high-earning households," DeJohn says. Here are the states that saw the biggest net inflow of high-earning households:

A drone attack on Rohingya fleeing Myanmar killed many dozens of people, including families with children, several witnesses said, describing survivors wandering between piles of bodies to identify dead and injured relatives. Four witnesses, activists and a diplomat described drone attacks on Monday that struck down families waiting to cross the border into neighboring Bangladesh. Three of the witnesses told Reuters on Friday that the Arakan Army was responsible, allegations the group denied. One witness, 35-year-old Mohammed Eleyas, said his pregnant wife and 2-year-old daughter were wounded in the attack and later died. He was standing with them on the shoreline when drones began attacking the crowds, Eleyas told Reuters from a refugee camp in Bangladesh.

Tourists are flocking to Costa Rica, with visitors trying to get a taste of the Blue Zone lifestyle that promises better-than-average health and longevity. Researchers from Stanford have studied the Nicoya Blue Zone. "It's not uncommon to see people in Nicoya live to be in their 90s, but we're seeing that number slip back down into the 80s." AdvertisementStill, if you're in the region, you will probably see a lot about the Blue Zone as a selling point driving more tourism. "A lot of people are using it for their business — Blue Zone this, Blue Zone that — I'm sure they know what it means, but the lifestyle is something that's fading, unfortunately, because it was all the old-timers keeping it alive," Jones told BI.

Although steadily rising global temperatures and their effects are increasingly hard to ignore, Burt believes they're not yet factored into property values. Flood insurance costs will skyrocket since they're severely underpriced to climate risk, his research indicates. Related stories"I think that there's a lot of pent-up supply from folks, particularly who are being exposed to these ownership cost increases away from mortgage rates," Burt said. They'll then be prepared to either bear the burden of higher insurance costs, or sell. That's made Burt even more confident about his long-held thesis, which many property owners are ignoring. For example, flood insurance costs in coastal cities could rise from $5,000 per year to $15,000 under the updated national flood insurance pricing set by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Burt said. And that's assuming flood risk doesn't continue to rise over time, which Burt believes is unlikely. That would be disastrous for all property owners in those markets, even those not trying to sell. Homeowners in cities most vulnerable to the effects of climate change should be sweating, if they aren't already.

How Anti-Immigrant Riots Flared in the U.K.

After more than a week of sporadic far-right violence, a fever seemed to ease in Britain on Wednesday night. During the previous days, racist and anti-immigrant rioting had flared in more than a dozen towns and cities across England and in Northern Ireland. The spark for the rioting was anger over a knife attack that killed three young girls and falsehoods that spread online about the perpetrator. Those participating in the riots have remained a small and strongly unpopular fringe, disowned even by politicians who seek to channel broader public misgivings about immigration. His assault killed three girls: Alice Dasilva Aguiar, 9; Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7; and Bebe King, 6.

Sections of the Rockaway Peninsula, a coastal strip of land in southern Queens, look like beach towns more than the concrete and steel landscape of much of New York City. On a mile-long stretch of the boardwalk in Edgemere, a neighborhood in the Rockaways that was a thriving resort destination a century ago, you can still see open skies, dunes and the ocean. But for most of the summer, the beach here is closed. Since 1996, this swath of sand and surf has been reserved for much of the spring and summer for nesting coastal piping plovers, which are endangered in New York and protected federally by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. Along the Eastern Seaboard, from barrier islands to private and public beaches on the mainland, efforts are being made to provide safe habitats for them.

Tel Aviv, Israel CNN —As Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu celebrates what he sees as major victories against Hamas and Hezbollah this week, the mood in Tel Aviv is far from celebratory. On Wednesday, Netanyahu said that his country “struck crushing blows” to the “the three H’s” – Hamas, the Houthis and Hezbollah, all Iranian-backed, all fierce Israeli foes. Hamas also blamed Israel for the assassination of their political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed on Wednesday in Tehran. Netanyahu’s tone stands at odds with the mood on the ground in Tel Aviv, including among families of the hostages still in Gaza. Polls have repeatedly shown that most Israelis prioritize the release of hostages over continued war.

The rise in violent weather events over the past few years are driving a decline in real estate values in Texas, Florida, and Louisiana, according to a recent note from Capital Economics. Related storiesAccording to data from MSCI, insurance costs in Florida have more than doubled from less than 2% of income receivable in 2017 to 4.5% at the end of 2023. And those higher costs have ultimately helped drag down property values in impacted regions, especially in the multifamily sector. Capital EconomicsBut there has been a sign of hope in that the rate of growth in insurance costs appears to have peaked, according to Pattison.
