Claudia Sheinbaum is officially taking office Tuesday morning as Mexico's first female president and the first of Jewish heritage. Sheinbaum is expected to head later to the National Palace in Mexico City's famed Zócalo to deliver a speech to constituents. López Obrador leaves office with an approval rating of nearly 80%, Noticias Telemundo reported. Still, crime rates remained high during López Obrador’s term, with at least 199,300 homicides and 51,700 persons reported missing from December 2018 to August of this year, Noticias Telemundo reported. Mexican government data has also shown that the strategy of López Obrador’s predecessors — pursuing drug lords in an all-out war — did not improve safety, either.

No ballot will have a gun-related initiative led by voters this fall. Among the four proposed reforms, voters in Washington state wanted to ban assault weapon sales, while voters in California proposed requiring trigger locks on firearms and annual gun license renewals. Heyne said it is a sign that state and federal legislators are enacting gun laws, meaning voters no longer have to take matters into their own hands. In a landslide, voters in California greenlit proposals that strengthened gun laws. In May, the state passed a law preventing local governments from enforcing red-flag laws.

U.S. District Judge Edward Chen in San Francisco on Tuesday sided with several advocacy groups, finding the current practice of adding fluoride to drinking water supplies to fight cavities presented unreasonable risks for children’s developing brains. But the judge stressed he was not concluding with certainty that fluoridated water endangered public health. The agency had denied their so-called citizen’s petition asking it to consider banning fluoridation chemicals from public drinking water. More than 200 million Americans, or about 75% of the population, currently have fluoride added to their drinking water at recommended levels of 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter of water. The U.S. practice differs from Europe, where fluoridated drinking water is rare.

A boy kidnapped more than seven decades ago from a California park was found alive and well as a senior citizen, reunited with surviving loved ones after his niece found him across the country through her own DNA research, police said Monday. His genetic material was a match to two surviving siblings in California, proving Albino was the boy taken in 1951, police said. The Oakland Police Department statement didn't make clear who officers believed took Albino from that park seven decades ago, nor did it identify who raised him. Albino's 92-year-old mother died in 2005 never knowing the fate of her kidnapped son, the Bay Area News Group reported. “I think he died happily,” said 63-year-old Alida Alequin, the niece who alerted police to her 22% DNA match to Albino.

MOSCOW — A court in Russia’s Kaliningrad region said it had sentenced a U.S. citizen to six years in jail and fined him for 100,000 roubles ($1,078) for kidnapping his son, after he tried to leave Russia with the child without permission from the boy’s mother. The court said that the U.S. citizen, Daniel Joseph Schneider, tried to leave Russia with his four-year-old son, who is a Russian citizen, on July 29, 2023. Schneider was detained near Poland by Russia’s border service while trying to cross the Russian border in a forest swamp, the court said. Yet Johnson, and any other Republican who votes for this bill, will be quietly defying Trump's wishes just weeks before the 2024 election. In essence, Trump asked Republicans to threaten a government shutdown over the provision. Yet when the continuing resolution with the SAVE Act came up for a vote last week, it failed, with 14 Republicans voting against it. Many Republicans simply don't want to have this fight right nowDespite Trump's push, Republicans on Capitol Hill understand that actually following his lead would be reckless. CNN —Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is considering a plan to force all Palestinian civilians out of northern Gaza, including Gaza City, in order to lay siege to Hamas and force the release of hostages. The plan does not mention whether, when, or how civilians would be allowed to return to northern Gaza. The idea comes from a group of retired Israeli military generals, who have formally presented it to the Israeli cabinet and a powerful parliamentary committee. “The right thing to do is to inform the approximately 300,000 residents who remained in the northern Gaza Strip, citizen residents, of the following: Not that we are suggesting you leave the northern Gaza Strip, we are ordering you to leave the northern Gaza Strip.”“In a week, the entire territory of the northern Gaza Strip will become military territory. The plan does not tackle the question of whether Palestinians could ever return to northern Gaza, one of its backers told CNN.
