watch nowYoung adults face financial obstaclesOver decades, attitudes about marriage and parenthood have changed. More recently, experts say, the overall cost of living has become a contributing factor in decisions to forgo parenthood. Between 1991 and 2024, the costs for child care rose at nearly twice the pace of overall inflation. But parenthood and related child care costs are not just personal financial issues, he added. "The cost of child care is really an economic growth and productivity issue as well," House said — and that affects all Americans, not just those with young kids.

After my son was born, getting him out of the house felt like an insurmountable task. Once I'd mastered what I needed to bring with me to keep him happy, I took my son to the Lake District for a weekend without my partner. It's a bonding experienceMy son is now 3, and I've just taken him away on vacation for four days without my partner. Now, I find more peace and satisfaction than I ever thought possible in watching him throwing stones into a lake. There's a real joy to be had in slow travel, and solo adventures with my son have helped me to achieve that.

Terry Vine | Getty ImagesHow dorm insurance compares to other optionsColleges and universities will often partner with different insurers to offer dorm insurance, Worters said. If parents decide to take on a dorm insurance policy, it would be billed separately from the room and board, said Worters. watch nowWhether you sign up for dorm insurance or not, your child's dorm possessions will likely be covered under your home insurance plan, according to experts. But keep in mind that dorm-specific insurance policies tend to have lower deductibles than home insurance policies, Worters said. The home insurance policy will often stretch over, so long as the kid lives in a dorm, she said.

Here’s a look at what could happen to inflation, jobs and the deficit if Trump or Harris win in November. That, among other things, would keep the top tax rate individuals pay at 37% compared to 39.6% before it went into effect. Meanwhile, the tax proposals Harris has put forth so far mostly involve imposing higher taxes, which would have a positive impact on the deficit. For instance, she’s endorsed raising the top individual income tax rate to 44.6% and the top long-term capital gains tax rate to 28% versus the current 20%. Taken together, the Penn Wharton Budget model estimates Harris’ proposals could increase the deficit by an additional $1.2 trillion by 2034.

Median household income rose to $80,610 in 2023, essentially the same as it was in 2019, the Census Bureau reported Tuesday. The typical household’s income rose 4% from 2022, driven primarily by an increase in workers’ earnings. There were widespread gains across the income ladder, though income inequality did not change significantly between 2022 and 2023. Changes in the poverty rateThe official poverty measure fell to 11.1% in 2023, down 0.4 percentage points from the year before. The supplemental poverty measure has been closely watched in recent years because it showed the impact of many federal Covid-19 pandemic relief programs.

Cate Blanchett touched down in Toronto for a wide-ranging talk about creative conflict on film sets, making big-budget films “risky,” and why her six-time Oscar-nominated film “Carol” struggled to find funding. “We want the numbers,” Blanchett said (though she didn’t specifically name-drop “Disclaimer” maker Apple, which, like most streamers, tends to shield its audience metrics). “At one point, another director was going to do it, and he got sort of taken off the project,” Blanchett said. Former President Donald Trump repeated his false claim that children are undergoing transition-related surgery during their school day, worsening fears among some conservatives that educators are pushing children to become transgender and aiding transitions without parental awareness. What the hell is wrong with our country?” Trump said Saturday at a campaign rally in Wisconsin, a vital swing state. About half the states ban transition-related surgery for minors, and even in states where such care is still legal, it is rare. The law limits the instruction of sexual orientation and gender identity in school and has been replicated in states across the country. Half of all teachers polled, including 62% of elementary school teachers, said elementary school students should not learn about gender identity in school.

Covid lockdowns, such as school closures, canceled sports activities and stay-at-home orders, prematurely aged teen brains by as much as four years, researchers from the University of Washington found. Lead researcher Patricia Kuhl, co-director of I-LABS, said that after Covid lockdowns began in 2020, they couldn’t do brain scan follow-ups until 2021. Pandemic lockdowns resulted in unusually accelerated brain maturation in adolescents. The research doesn’t prove the lockdowns caused the brain changes — mental health disorders were rising among children even before Covid. Another brain scan study in 2022 from Stanford University showed similar changes in cortical thickness in teen brains during Covid restrictions.

It was a stunning denouement for the self-proclaimed appointed son of God, a Filipino evangelist preacher who had millions of followers and influence at the highest levels of government but was wanted by Philippine authorities and the FBI on charges of human trafficking and sexual abuse. That changed in March, when a Philippine court ordered the arrest of Quiboloy and several other people on suspicion of child and sexual abuse and human trafficking. After he surrendered, officials said, Quiboloy was flown by military transport to Manila, the capital, and placed in police detention. After he won the presidency in 2022, Marcos set about dismantling Duterte’s power alliances, including the one with Quiboloy.
