"The implementation of Huawei cloud is not just about us, but is a bridge that will bring other Chinese companies to Saudi Arabia," said Steven Yi, the company's regional president. The step would contribute to the development of the country's digital economy, he said, adding that Huawei opened its regional headquarters in the Saudi capital this year. Saudi Arabia has previously said it would not sign contracts with foreign companies that did not have regional headquarters in the kingdom after this year. Huawei ranked fifth in the global cloud services market in the first quarter, with a market share of 2.4%, although it was the second-largest vendor in mainland China, according to research consultancy Canalys. In February Huawei said it would invest $400 million in the Saudi Arabia cloud region over the next five years.

Here’s what it takes to become an ‘It Girl’ today

Today, it’s a job in and of itself — one that, to do successfully, requires a team behind you. A year ago, the Venice Film Festival had enough star power to put even celebrity-worshiping Cannes on notice. But without all of those celebrities, can Venice still go viral? That puts Venice in a bind, as it’s regarded as one of the best places for Hollywood to unveil starry awards-season titles. (A low-profile Italian film is opening instead.) And I’ve heard of a few more starry fall films that were earmarked for Venice but opted for the Telluride Film Festival instead, since that event is less driven by the photo ops and news conferences that are no longer feasible in Italy.

‘The Idol’ is canceled after just one season

CNN —Television show “The Idol” has been canceled after just one, poorly received season, HBO has confirmed. “After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season,” a HBO spokesperson said in a statement sent to CNN Tuesday. Like HBO’s hit show “Euphoria,” “The Idol” was helmed by Sam Levinson. “The expression ‘From the sublime to the ridiculous’ has seldom felt more fitting than in watching ‘The Idol,’ HBO’s new wannabe-sexy drama,” a review from CNN’s Brian Lowry said in June. “HBO can write off ‘The Idol’ as an experiment in creative freedom that didn’t pay off, which happens all the time,” Lowry concluded.

The influential Lord Brougham “discovered” Cannes in 1834, when a cholera epidemic interrupted his progress to Italy. Besotted by the Arcadian surroundings, he built a villa. U.S. Consumers Show Signs of Stress

After a post-pandemic shopping spree, some Americans are becoming more selective with their spending as they struggle with factors like inflation. Although overall consumer spending remains strong, analysts say they detect worrying shifts in shopping habits. Financial reports this week from retailers including Macy’s, Kohl’s, Foot Locker and Nordstrom suggest that consumers are no longer buying with abandon. Executives also flagged rising credit card delinquencies and higher rates of retail theft as ominous signs that consumers could be strapped for cash. China, the world’s second-largest economy, which once seemed unstoppable, is plagued by a series of problems and a growing lack of faith in the future.

A man walks past the logo of Fox Networks Group during the annual MIPCOM television programme market in Cannes, France, October 16, 2018. The FCC said it was opening a public docket allowing for release of comments and presentations, saying permitting broader participation will serve the public interest. A Fox Television spokesperson on Wednesday said the "petition to deny the license renewal of WTXF-TV is frivolous, completely without merit and asks the FCC to upend the First Amendment and long-standing FCC precedent." The FCC, an independent federal agency, does not license broadcast networks, but issues them to individual broadcast stations on a staggered basis for eight-year periods. Fox cited FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel's comments in 2017 opposing Trump's suggestion the FCC could revoke the broadcast license for Comcast's (CMCSA.O) NBC over coverage of his administration.

The U.S. Commerce Department had added Huawei to its export control list in 2019 over security concerns. If Huawei is constructing facilities under names of other companies as Semiconductor Industry Association says, then it might be able to circumvent U.S. government restrictions to indirectly purchase American chip-making equipment, according to the Bloomberg report. The 75th Cannes Film Festival - Photocall for the film "Leila's Brothers" in competition - Cannes, France, May 26, 2022. The Iranian Cinema Directors Association said in an Instagram post that it was “the strangest judiciary sentence in the history of Iranian cinema”. It said the movie, "Leila's Brothers", had been approved by the government and the Iranian government itself had participated at the Cannes festival for years. “Such a strange sentence is a futile attempt to humiliate this young and intelligent filmmaker of Iranian cinema,” the association said. Several independent filmmakers said they saw the sentence as a diversion from the upcoming anniversary of the Sept. 16, 2022 death in custody of Mahsa Amini.

CNN —Famed Iranian director Saeed Roustaee has been sentenced to six months in prison, according to local reports, after presenting his most-recent film at the Cannes International Film Festival last year. Roustaee screened the film “Leila’s Brothers,” a movie about a family in Tehran trying to make ends meet, in competition for the Palme d’Or, the highest prize awarded at Cannes. Roustaee and “Leila’s Brother” producer Javad Noruzbegi were sentenced to six months for airing the film and “contributing to the opposition’s propaganda against the Islamic regime,” according to Iranian media. “His voice needs to be heard.”“Leila’s Brothers” was previously banned in Iran, as officials ruled the film “broke the rules by being entered at international film festivals without authorisation,” the AFP reported. Though it did not win the Palme d’Or, the film won two other prizes at Cannes, and was nominated for Best International Film at the Munich International Film Festival.

A prominent Iranian film director and an Iranian producer were sentenced on Tuesday to six months in prison for creating the film “Leila’s Brothers” and screening it at the Cannes Film Festival without official approval, according to the country’s news media. Saeed Roustaee, the film’s director, and Javad Noruzbegi, who produced the film with Roustaee, were both sentenced to six months in prison by the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Tehran for “participating in the opposition’s propaganda against the Islamic regime,” according to the conviction announcement made by the court and reported in Etemad, an Iranian reformist newspaper. “The defendants aligned with the oppositional media, under the influence of propaganda, in line with the counter-revolutionary (anti-regime) forces,” the announcement read. “With the aim of raising money and seeking fame,” it said, they “prepared fodder and intensified the media battle against the religious authority.”Roustaee and Noruzbegi will serve about nine days of their sentence, with the remainder suspended for five years, Etemad reported. During that period, Roustaee and Noruzbegi will be required to complete a 24-hour course about “creating movies aligned with national interests and national morality” and refrain from associating with other individuals in the film industry, according to Etemad.

“How can I speak of love when I’m dead?” runs a powerful line in “Amour,” a stage adaptation of Michael Haneke’s 2012 film that premiered on Sunday at the Salzburg Festival, in Austria. Love and death are, of course, the two great themes of art, but rarely have they been brought together so hauntingly as in Haneke’s film, a portrait of an elderly couple forced to confront the issue of when life is no longer worth living. Told in Haneke’s characteristically severe style, the film earned the Austrian director both a Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and an Oscar for best foreign language film. Henkel scored a triumph in Salzburg two summers ago with “Richard the Kid and the King,” a sweeping epic of Shakespeare’s bloodthirsty monarch that ran to four hours. The German director’s “Amour” — a co-production with the Münchner Kammerspiele theater, in Munich, where it will run in late October — is as affectingly tender as her earlier Salzburg outing was grimly savage.
