Here’s what you need to know about the massive software outage. Its systems are used by roughly 15,000 car dealerships across the United States and Canada. Under normal circumstances, the CDK software allows the dealership to register a vehicle almost instantaneously, but now the process faces heavy delays. It said it was able to bring a “small initial test group” of car dealerships back online. But the next morning, the company told dealerships another incident had happened.

The agreement requires Uber to pay $148 million and Lyft to pay $27 million to the state. Campbell had been asking a judge to conclude that the state’s 55,000 Uber drivers and 35,000 Lyft drivers are employees under state law and therefore entitled to benefits such as a minimum wage, overtime and earned sick time. “Today’s agreement holds Uber and Lyft accountable.”The settlement provides for greater benefits and pay for Uber and Lyft drivers than provided under a similar settlement in November with New York state and under legislation signed into law in May in Minnesota. They started the night hoping that President Biden would use the first debate of 2024 to his advantage, that he would finally quash fears about his age and give the impression of a determined statesman compared with former President Donald J. Trump. But for the roughly 40 Democrats who gathered Thursday night at a union hall in Sacramento, it did not take long for the mood to descend into something between grim despair and mild panic. Within minutes, even ardent supporters in the capital of California fell silent, exchanging glances and acknowledging quietly that Mr. Biden, his virtues aside, seemed less forceful than Mr. Trump, and weary. Toward the end, some of the younger attendees left before the debate was over. “Neither of them inspires confidence,” said Dubrea Sanders, 25.

London CNN —President Joe Biden had a shaky performance in last night’s presidential debate, triggering panic in the Democrat camp. Former President Donald Trump, meanwhile, repeated multiple falsehoods while doubling down on his record of cutting taxes and hiking tariffs during his first presidential term. If repeated in a second Trump term, many economists fear that kind of agenda could stoke inflation at a critical moment and add to America’s rapidly growing debt mountain. That could pull the typical year-end election relief rally forward, said Ed Clissold, chief US strategist at Ned Davis Research. The US dollar has also been reactive — it edged higher as initial CNN polling found that Trump was viewed as the winner of the debate.

Support from North Korea — in the form of weapons and ammunition — helps Russia keep up the pressure. Washington CNN —US women’s soccer legend Alex Morgan will not be on the team’s roster for the Olympic Games next month in Paris, a symbol of the changing of the guard going on inside the women’s national team. The 22-player roster, which includes 18 players going to Paris and four alternates, includes only eight players from the 2020 Olympics, which were held in 2021 in Tokyo, and 10 members of the 2023 World Cup team. She acknowledged the roster for Paris will have less experienced players than previous tournaments with an eye toward development. “I’m not looking backwards, we have to look forward with a group of players that have put that World Cup behind them. Read previewThis as-told-to essay is based on a transcribed conversation with Sue Campbell, 58, about relocating to China for work. I was often the liaison between international clients and the team in China, helping everyone understand each other better. Employees in China were very conscious of their place in the company hierarchyHierarchies were very apparent in Chinese work culture. In China, people seemed to take pride in their work and I think they didn't want to make themselves look bad. If anybody has the chance to work in Asia, I'd recommend it.

But even now, Chinese students say that they have been facing extra scrutiny while entering the US. The Washington Post, citing online discussion forums, reported in March that Chinese students were questioned for hours at US border controls, or had their visas canceled without valid reasons. In April, the Senate passed a bill that, if signed into law by President Joe Biden, will force Chinese tech company Bytedance to sell video site TikTok.

How the vodka soda became 'gay water'
  + stars: | 2024-06-22 | by ( Alex Harring | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +11 min
The combination of soda water and vodka has long been a fixture of boozy LGBTQ+ life, particularly among gay men. One of those came from Houston-based lawyer Jeff Watters, who called the vodka soda the "gay water" of the nighttime in a post on X. Retail is also central to the business for Gay Water, a startup offering canned cocktail variations of vodka soda. The former's vodka soda citrus is 100 calories per can, while Gay Water contains 80. The Gay Bar Shop, a specialty retailer, sells an 11-ounce, $49 candle that smells like a vodka soda with a lime garnish.

Debates over antisemitism have flared for months on college campuses, in local government meetings and in Congress, in many cases boiling down to bitter disagreements over what is, and what is not, antisemitism. There was no such argument five and a half years ago in Pittsburgh. When 11 worshipers were killed at the Tree of Life synagogue on Oct. 27, 2018, the gunman who carried out the massacre was blunt in his bigotry, declaring beforehand on social media that he was acting out of a conviction that Jewish people were conspiring to replace the white race. On Sunday, members of the Tree of Life congregation will gather to break ground for a memorial and a new Tree of Life building. It is a story that has gotten more complicated to tell since the Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7 and the war that has followed.

Baldwin previously stated to CNN that he did not pull the trigger on the weapon during the deadly incident. “I never took a gun and pointed at somebody and clicked the thing,” Baldwin said at the time. The special prosecution team also alleged Baldwin was “inattentive during the firearms training” conducted by on-set armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed, claiming the actor was texting and video conferencing with family members rather than focusing on the safety briefing. In the filing, special prosecutors repeatedly insisted Baldwin exercised complete control over the set and crew during instances where alleged unsafe practices were identified on video.
