But political violence hasn’t stopped since then. The nation is also still processing the attack on the US Capitol by Trump supporters on January 6, 2021. In one of the most poignant reactions, Giffords said in a statement, “Political violence is terrifying. I know.” She added: “I’m holding former President Trump, and all those affected by today’s indefensible act of violence in my heart. Political violence is un-American and is never acceptable – never.”Unfortunately, history suggests that violence, while indefensible, is also a quintessential scar on American politics.

CNN —Sunday’s Copa América final will likely be the last time Lionel Messi plays for Argentina at a major international tournament. As was the case in the 2021 Copa América win, which ended an 18-year trophy drought for the national team, this run has felt like a real team effort. “It’s a national team with really good players, is very intense and has fast and dynamic players up front. Buda Mendes/Getty ImagesFor Colombia, the resurgence of James Rodríguez has proven to be crucial not only throughout the unbeaten run, but in particular during this Copa América. Colombia, remarkably, last reached the final in 2001 and the trophy from that year remains the only Copa América title in the country’s history.

New York CNN —US stock futures barely budged after an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump on Saturday, signaling calm in the markets as Trump survived the incident. Dow futures rose 65 points, or 0.2%, while S&P 500 futures rose 0.1% and Nasdaq Composite futures were unchanged. On Saturday, the former president was shot in the ear during his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in what the FBI says was an assassination attempt. Markets crave stability, and an assassination attempt against the presumptive nominee might have thrown that into chaos. But Trump appears to have escaped with mostly superficial injuries, and the market’s thesis of the race hasn’t changed: Trump remains the frontrunner to become the next president.

Japan’s Ayaka Furue sank a dramatic, clutch putt for eagle on the final hole of the 2024 Amundi Evian Championship in France on Sunday to win by one stroke. Coming into the final hole, there was a three-way tie with Furue, Australian Stephanie Kyriacou and Thailand’s Patty Tavatanakit at -17. Furue calmly rolled in the eagle to cap a six-under final round to go 19-under for the tournament – one shot better than Kyriacou who birdied the final hole. She would birdie the hole and go on to win the title with a dramatic 18th hole eagle to win by a single stroke. The victory represents her second career victory on the LPGA Tour: Furue previously won the 2022 Women’s Scottish Open.

Last Thursday, 87% of S & P 500 stocks outperformed the index itself, which Goldman Sachs called "the most in the history of our data set." Its total gain of 57%, measured by the S & P 500, is almost exactly half the post-1929 average too. For good measure, this year the S & P 500 has posted the best-ever start to a presidential election year. Arguably something close to it is already priced in to a considerable degree, with the S & P 500 pushing 22-times forward earnings again. The elevated sentiment backdrop is par for the course for a bull market, but sometimes associated with pauses or pullbacks.

The Israeli military said this week that it had concluded its operation there. Palestinians returning to Shajaiye, after heeding a call by Israel to evacuate, said the neighborhood was so devastated it was uninhabitable. “The current situation in Shajaiye today is tragic,” said Ahmed Sidu, a photographer, who went back to his home as soon as he heard that Israeli forces had pulled out. Palestinian Civil Defense said on Friday that their crews began recovering bodies from Tal Al-Hawa and the Al-Sinaa neighborhoods, as they said the Israeli forces appeared to be leaving those areas as well. The Israeli military did not confirm its forces were also pulling out of those areas.

CNN —Dead seals are washing up along beaches in South Africa’s port city of Cape Town, a coastal management official told CNN Friday, amid an outbreak of rabies in the marine animals. Cape Town, home to dozens of beaches and a coastline extending over 300 kilometers (186 miles), harbors thousands of Cape fur seals, a seal species native to southern Africa. He urged calm however, saying it is normal to find carcasses of Cape fur seals along the shoreline. While “lots” of dead seals have washed ashore this week, many of them have died naturally, he said. Oelofse said there was yet to be a seal-to-human transmission of rabies in Cape Town and the city’s authorities were working to prevent it.

It went far beyond what even the most pessimistic court observers expected; the dissenters, if anything, responded with restraint.) “Nobody’s suggesting that.” (Reality check: That is precisely what Idaho was suggesting, by arguing that federal law doesn’t pre-empt the state ban.) “Some courts have misunderstood the methodology of our recent Second Amendment cases,” the chief justice wrote, explaining why the lower court had been wrong. Behavior like this has a name: gaslighting, a form of psychological manipulation that involves making people doubt their own, accurate perception of reality. For a gun law to be compatible with the Second Amendment, the decision said, the government “must demonstrate that the regulation is consistent with this nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation.” In other words, if the American founders didn’t pass a specific gun law in the 18th century, then we in the 21st century can’t either.

CNN —For weeks, the White House press corps has been boiling – and not from the Washington, DC, heat. Some feel the White House misled the press before President Joe Biden’s stumbling performance at last month’s CNN presidential debate. “I think this is a credibility crisis writ large for the White House, and certainly as a spokesperson for the White House, this is a credibility crisis for her,” one White House reporter told CNN, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the situation. “We are in the midst of a full-blown feeding frenzy,” former CNN White House correspondent and Washington bureau chief Frank Sesno said. Sesno and former White House correspondents and officials told CNN that questions surrounding Biden’s age and performance, along with how the White House is handling the issue, are legitimate and warrant scrutiny.

A new report from Moody's on Wednesday warns that generative AI and deepfakes are among the election integrity issues that could present a risk to U.S. institutional credibility. In a letter to Rosenworcel, it encouraged the FCC to delay its decision until after the elections because its changes would not be mandatory across digital political ads. Some social media platforms have already self-adopted some sort of AI disclosure ahead of regulations. Google requires all political ads with modified content that "inauthentically depicts real or realistic-looking people or events" to have disclosures, but doesn't require AI disclosures on all political ads. Thirteen states have laws on election interference and deepfakes, eight of which were enacted since January.

Aides to the president told CNN that not only are they no longer interested in discussing Biden’s on-stage fiasco last month, and there are simply no outstanding questions about the president’s political future to debate. “We’re done talking about the debate and focused on a singular mission: Defeating Donald Trump in November,” one Biden aide told CNN. As a single person, you'll need an annual income of $40,000 to cover basic expenses in the cheapest U.S. states, according to a recent SmartAsset analysis. The state with the lowest costs of living is West Virginia, closely followed by Arkansas and Oklahoma, the analysis says. In contrast, the most expensive state for a single person is Massachusetts, where a single person needs $58,009 per year to cover basic costs. The difference in basic costs between states is largely due to housing, which tends to be most affordable in rural states. Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India strolled alongside President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia under the trees at the Russian leader’s suburban residence as the sun set. He rode a golf cart along the paths, sipped tea during an hourslong chat and petted a horse on a visit to Mr. Putin’s stables, breathing in the calm of an estate that once belonged to the Romanov dynasty. The scene, on Monday evening, opened the Indian leader’s two-day trip to Russia and illustrated a sobering reality: Despite the West’s intended isolation of Russia over its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, other nations have pursued their own interests with regard to Moscow, helping Mr. Putin shore up Russia’s economy and wage its war. While Mr. Modi was hugging the Russian leader, rescue workers in Kyiv were searching for survivors under the rubble of Ukraine’s largest pediatric hospital in the wake of a Russian missile attack. Mr. Putin has held two meetings with China’s leader, Xi Jinping, in two months, along with meeting the leaders of Vietnam, Hungary, Belarus and the nations of Central Asia, keeping a robust diplomatic schedule.
