CNN —At a Thanksgiving gathering three decades ago, I went cold turkey on eating meat. “To quote George Bernard Shaw,” I announced, “‘Animals are my friends, and I don’t eat my friends.’”No one else made a toast. And over the past three decades, vegetarian options on restaurant menus have grown alongside my palate. The world is getting more culinarily progressiveBefore I got married, my in-laws thought I was a little odd for not eating meat. “I eat very little meat,” I’ve heard thousands of times after I say I’m vegetarian.

The tariffs might also violate the very trade agreement Trump negotiated with Mexico and Canada during his first term. This is not what the Constitution envisionedAfter all, the Constitution specifically gives Congress, not the president, the power to “regulate Commerce with foreign Nations.”How does Trump have the power to impose tariffs without any input from Congress? It’s pretty much the opposite of what’s in the Constitution, and it didn’t happen right away. In 1934, they passed the Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act, which gave the president power to lower import duties for countries with which the US had trade agreements. In the 1970s, Congress gave the president new trade promotion authority power to negotiate trade agreements and then have Congress ratify them without amendment.

CNN —A mother who kept her baby daughter in a drawer under her bed for almost three years has been jailed for seven and a half years in Britain. He went on to tell the court that the little girl was left alone when her mother went to work, took the other children to school and even when she went to stay with relatives over Christmas. He alerted family members and later that day social services attended the property, where they found the girl in a drawer. When confronted, the mother “did not show any emotion and appeared blasé,” the social worker told the court in a statement. During an interview with police, the woman said had not known she had been pregnant and was “really scared” giving birth.

That’s thanks to a new international airport, equipped with a 2,200-meter (7,217-foot) runway, opening in the capital of Nuuk. Before the new airport’s opening, traveling by air to Greenland meant flying into smaller cities such as Kangerlussuaq to the north or Narsarsuaq, further south. The new airport will serve as the base for Air Greenland, which will operate an Airbus A330neo plane on a route to Copenhagen, Denmark. Jens Lauridsen, chief executive of Greenland Airports, knows the opening of the new facility at Nuuk will have a big effect on tourism and the economy. She plans on being on the first flight that lands at the new Nuuk International Airport.

In 2023, the US was South Korea’s second-largest export market after China, with $116 billion of goods traded. But Trump’s planned tariffs on Chinese goods could also benefit some countries in Southeast Asia as factories may relocate from China to other places in the region. Shoe seller Steve Madden announced earlier this month that it will halve its Chinese production to avoid Trump’s tariffs, and it will be sourcing from Cambodia, Vietnam, Mexico and Brazil, among other countries. In 2023, the US was the number one recipient of exports from China, Vietnam, Thailand, India and Japan. In the first nine months of 2024, the United States’ largest trade deficit was with China.

CNN —A controversial American live-streamer is facing the prospect of prison in South Korea for his offensive antics, in a case that is shining a light on the rise of so-called “nuisance influencers” seeking clicks overseas. Ramsey Khalid Ismael, 24, commonly known by his online alias, “Johnny Somali,” has been indicted of causing a “commotion” at a convenience store, Seoul prosecutors confirmed to CNN. Angry locals threatened reprisals against the live-streamer in online posts following the incident. Separately, a man was arrested in Seoul last month for allegedly punching Ismael in the face, the Yonhap News Agency reported. Last year, the live-streamer was arrested in Osaka on suspicion of trespassing in a construction site, according to the Kyodo News agency.

Is bald Reddit the nicest place on the internet?
  + stars: | 2024-11-27 | by ( Oscar Holland | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
CNN —The internet isn’t as nice a place as it used to be. Reddit’s r/bald is a 143,000-strong community (comprised mostly of, presumably, bald men) offering advice, support and encouragement to those who’ve taken, or are considering taking, “the plunge” by shaving off their thinning hair. “If there was a top 10 of bald glow ups, you’d be in there somewhere,” reads one of the 13,000 replies. Friends and loved ones may tell us how great we’d look bald but, sadly, we often care more about what strangers (rather than people whose opinions really matter) think of us. There are other ways in which the platform’s design encourages courteous behavior among bald men and beyond.

CNN —The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) is seeking an arrest warrant for Myanmar’s military leader for crimes committed against the persecuted Rohingya minority group. As a result of the violence, the ICC estimated that more than one million Rohingya were forcibly displaced from Myanmar — many fleeing to neighboring Bangladesh. Min Aung Hlaing is the leader of Myanmar’s powerful military, known as the Tatmadaw, which seized power in 2021. But even If the warrant is approved, the ICC could be limited in its jurisdiction as Myanmar is not among the 123 member states of the court. However, member countries could be obligated to transfer Min Aung Hlaing into ICC custody if he enters their territory after the warrant is issued.

The FTC, in a letter sent to Microsoft, demanded that it hand over information to assist in the agency’s investigation, a source familiar with the matter told CNN. The FTC and Microsoft declined to comment. Microsoft also battled FTC resistance to its $69 billion acquisition of video game publisher Activision Blizzard, which closed in October 2023. The agency had argued the merger would give Microsoft a monopoly in video game publishing, which the company denied. His first major global brouhaha since winning reelection posed the following questions that will help define the character of his second term. There’s no guarantee that Canada, Mexico and China will back down immediately. Trump’s trade war rhetoric is a reminder that in his worldview, the United States has few friends — only adversaries against whom it can choose to win or lose. The prime minister therefore has a huge incentive to avoid a trade war that could cause havoc in the Canadian economy. Initial reaction to Trump’s broadside against Canada and Mexico suggests that many observers see his outburst as a negotiating tactic.

On Tuesday, Trump’s transition team signed an agreement with the White House after months of postponing the traditional transition process – a delay that Biden officials warned could undermine an orderly transfer of power and pose national security risks. In a statement announcing the agreement, the Trump transition said it will use its own security and information systems, its own office spaces and maintain its own ethics plan. The transition team said its ethics plan will be posted online in compliance with federal law. Several of Trump’s picks have vast personal fortunes and deep ties to the private sector. Trump’s transition team has so far relied instead on internal vetting.

Passengers weren’t alerted to the stowaway on Delta flight 264 from New York’s JFK International Airport to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport until the plane landed in Paris, said Rob Jackson, who was a passenger on the flight. “Apparently, she hid in a lavatory all the way at the rear of the aircraft when we departed JFK,” Jackson told CNN. CNN —The Pentagon is unlikely to use all of the billions of dollars authorized by Congress to arm Ukraine before President Joe Biden leaves office, according to two US officials and three defense officials. For months, the US has run into the limits of its ability to replenish its own weapons inventories, which limited what the Biden administration has been able to send Ukraine. In September, Biden committed billions of dollars in military aid to Ukraine as President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the White House. The US announced a $1 billion military aid package for Ukraine that same day. But the value of aid packages quickly dipped, as the stockpiles of weapons and equipment the Pentagon was able to send Kyiv dwindled.

New York CNN —A federal judge on Wednesday tossed a defamation lawsuit brought by an Arizona man targeted by conspiracy theorists against Fox News, accusing the right-wing network and former primetime host Tucker Carlson of spreading false narratives about the January 6 attack. As part of the bogus narrative, several right-wing personalities, including Carlson, claimed a former Trump supporter, Ray Epps, was a federal agent who helped incite the attack. “Following the dismissals of the Jankowicz, Bobulinski, and now Epps cases, FOX News is pleased with these back-to-back decisions from federal courts preserving the press freedoms of the First Amendment,” Fox News Media said in a statement.
