Investors searching for income were buoyed by the move higher in the 10-year Treasury yield, but there are also some other opportunities to bring in some cash. "They can blend A with AA and AAA and you can get better yields," Weinberg explained. In fact, a good signal to buy munis is when their yields are at least 85% of corresponding Treasury yields, he said. Investors can also buy municipal bond funds to get exposure to the market. Investors can also get exposure through a diversified exchange traded fund, such as the iShares iBoxx $ Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF .
February's reversal for stocks and renewed climb higher in benchmark interest rates resulted in more cautious investors, as shown by some of the month's most popular ETFs. The list of the most popular equity ETFs for the past month, measured by net inflows, shows a defensive tilt and suggests investors 'appetite for income funds remains strong. The next two funds on the list are from JPMorgan, including one red hot income fund. Other popular income funds include the Schwab US Dividend Equity ETF (SCHD) and the Pacer US Cash Cows 100 ETF (COWZ) . Outside of equity funds, the hunt for yield showed up in demand for short-term bond ETFs .
She inquired about buying Treasury bonds directly, which she has never once inquired about in the past. Asking about putting all your money into bonds and chucking the stock market is like the shoeshine boy talking about stock market tips at the top of the stock market. Individuals can of course buy Treasury bonds directly from the U.S. government through TreasuryDirect. Similar products, such as the Schwab Short-Term U.S. Treasury ETF and the SPDR Portfolio Short Term Treasury ETF, also have seen significant inflows in recent months. "ETFs for Treasurys are preferred by many, basically all because they trade like a stock," Morris told me.
The recent move higher in Treasury yields appears to be sparking a shift back into short-term bond funds by investors. The 10-year Treasury yield is threatening to climb back above 4%, and the 6-month yield has already topped 5%. The three biggest funds for inflows over the past week were short-term Treasury ETFs, led by the iShares Short Treasury Bond ETF (SHV) , according to FactSet. When interest rates are rising, short-term bonds become more attractive for investors. The FolioBeyond Rising Rates ETF (RISR) , which invests in a slice of mortgage products that benefit from higher rates, is still under $100 million in assets despite outperforming in 2022.
Finally! Savings Rates Could Soon Beat Inflation

Why savings rates could rise in 2023Fortunately, many experts predict the situation will reverse, with inflation on a downward trend even as the Fed continues nudging up interest rates. Since the most generous banks have increased their rates in tandem with the Fed, they would likely increase savings rates as well. Bottenfield doesn’t see savings account interest rates surpassing the rate of inflation before 2024. “The difference between an online savings account and the average brick and mortar account is huge right now,” says Tumin. If you think interest rates will fall, you can lock in mid-4% rates long-term with a five-year CD.

After a dismal 2022 for fixed income funds, bonds are steadily regaining steam in the new year thanks in part to an inverted yield curve. "There's now income within the fixed income ETFs that are available," Todd Rosenbluth, head of research at VettaFi, told Mike Santoli on CNBC's "ETF Edge" on Monday. We've seen high-yield fixed income ETFs see inflows this year, as well as some of the safer products." Given the inverted shape of the yield curve, JPMorgan Ultra-Short Income ETF (JPST) offers a portfolio comprised of short-term, investment-grade bonds. "It's really too early to declare and wave a victory flag with regard to the soft landing," Schneider said in the same segment on Monday.
Soros disclosed a $325.3 million stake, or 2.9 million shares, in biotech firm Horizon Therapeutics (HZNP.O), which was bought by Amgen (AMGN.O) in December for nearly $28 billion. The firm also bought 2.8 million shares, valued at $90 million, in home health assessment firm Signify Health (SGFY.N). It added $209.1 million, or 8.5 million shares, in Memphis-based financial services company First Horizon, which was acquired by Toronto-Dominion Bank (TD.TO) roughly a year ago for $13.4 billion. Shares in Zoom Technologies Inc (ZTNO.PK) and Airbnb Inc (ABNB.O) were sold, while it reduced its holdings in Amazon.com (AMZN.O), by 54.5%, to 901 million shares. The regulatory filing also showed Soros bought $255 million in an investment grade corporate bond ETF.
JPMorgan Equity Premium Income ETF (Ticker: JEPI) The ETFs that showed up on the screen included JPMorgan's actively managed equity and equity derivative ETF , known by its ticker JEPI. The 30-day SEC yield shows the dividends and interest earned after expenses. VanEck Mortgage REIT Income ETF (Ticker: MORT) The rise in risk-free rates led to the dramatic re-rating of real estate investment trusts in 2022. The ETF tracks the ICE BofA CCC and Lower U.S. High Yield Constrained Index and currently offers a 30-day SEC yield of 13.26%. JPMorgan Nasdaq Equity Premium Income ETF (Ticker: JEPQ) The JPMorgan Nasdaq Equity Premium Income ETF appears to be a riskier alternative to the defensive-leaning JEPI.
Feb 7 (Reuters) - Emerging market bond and equity funds received heavy inflows in January after a dry patch last year, aided by China's reopening and softening inflation pressures worldwide. According to Refinitiv Lipper data, which covers over 33,700 emerging market (EM) funds, EM equity funds received $13.2 billion, and EM bond funds obtained $11.36 billion in January. Fund flows: EM equities and bondsIn 2022, EM bond funds faced a combined net outflow of $26.26 billion. In January, the iShares Core MSCI Emerging Markets ETF and iShares JPMorgan USD Emerging Markets Bond ETF received $3.2 billion and $2.4 billion, respectively, while iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF and BlackRock Emerging Markets Fund; Inst obtained over $1 billion each. Initial euphoria over China's reopening has fizzled out and EM assets have seen slight declines in February.
Investment giant Vanguard has made its mark as a provider of low-cost, passive index funds and ETFs, but there is still a role for active management to play, the company's CEO said Tuesday. Vanguard CEO Tim Buckley said at the Exchange ETF Conference in Miami that the company has about 20% of its assets in active strategies, down from about 90% when he started at the company more than three decades ago. And if you have the risk appetite for active, it's going to play much more on the sideline," he added. Low management fees are still important in active strategies, because they can keep portfolio managers from taking unnecessary risks, Buckley said. One example of an active strategy that has paid off for Vanguard clients is the Vanguard Ultra-Short Bond ETF (VUSB) , which launched in April 2021.
Bond yields and prices move inversely to each other so, as rates rose, prices tumbled – and did so at an inopportune time since stocks were suffering, too. Thus, they have higher interest rate risk and greater price fluctuation. He likes short-term Treasury bond funds and ETFs. Another way to mitigate interest rate risk is to use a barbell: You hold equal amounts of shorter and longer-dated issues. "You don't have to reach too far in terms of credit risk and interest rate risk to capture healthy yield in today's environment."
I'm at the ETF Exchange Conference in Miami Beach, where 2,000 registered investment advisors and ETF providers have descended on the city for the industry's largest gathering. Think active, dividend, foreign debt and alternative income ETFs," Tom Lydon, of VettaFi, the conference sponsor, told me. "I believe fixed income ETFs are setup to have a historic year," Nate Geraci from the ETF Store said in January. This year, they're back, but despite the surge in thematic ETF performance to start the year, investors have yet to throw significant sums of money into the game. "Despite the surge in thematic ETF performance to start the year, investors are yet to start allocating again.
BlackRock launched the AAA CLO ETF (CLOA) less than a month ago, and the product already has about $30 million in assets under management. Panagram Structured Asset Management is exploring riskier versions in the same ETF sector, launching the BBB-B CLO ETF (CLOZ) and surpassing the $20 million mark in less than two weeks. Fixed income funds boom The growth of these funds comes after a boom in fixed income ETFs in 2022, as rising interest rates and high inflation sent investors hunting for ways to generate additional yield. Invesco and VanEck also launched CLO ETFs last year, presenting additional investment options. However, there are diversification benefits to having floating rate ETFs for investors, especially in the U.S. where most fixed income products have a fixed rather than a floating rate, Kerschner said.
Investors should avoid being lured back into riskier stocks and funds by this January rally, according to a strategist at BlackRock. Wall Street is off to a solid start in 2023, with all three major averages positive in January. But the rally petered out and the broad market index fell back to a new bear market bottom, below 3,600, in October. .SPX mountain 2022-06-01 The stock market enjoyed a short-lived rally last summer. If Chaudhuri is right, investors may be well served to stick with some of the strategies that worked last year.
The iShares MSCI emerging market Asia exchange traded fund is up 11% and the iShares core MSCI emerging markets ETF is up more than 10% since the year began. For Kotler, it's emerging market bonds, where his firm has an overweight rating as opposed to a neutral rating on equities. One other factor that should help emerging market countries outperform in 2023 is the winding down of the strength of the U.S. dollar. Some top emerging market bond funds include the iShares JP Morgan USD Emerging Markets Bond ETF , the Vanguard Emerging Markets Government Bond ETF and the VanEck JP Morgan EM Local Currency Bond ETF. Of course, the downside to large emerging market funds is that they tend to be most heavily weighted to China, as it's the largest emerging market country.
The renewed interest in fixed income comes after 2022 proving one of the worst years on record for fixed income investing, leading some to wonder whether the traditional portfolio of 60% stocks and 40% bonds may have outlived its usefulness. Surging interest in bonds is evident in fixed income ETFs, where cash has been pouring in during the first two weeks of the year. Last year, a record of $266 billion of cash flowed into fixed income ETFs, according to BlackRock. The iShares JP Morgan USD Emerging Markets bond ETF (EMB) also makes the top 10. For investors who are more cautious about the macroeconomic picture, there could still be solid returns in safer corners of the bond market.
NEW YORK, Jan 11 (Reuters) - BlackRock's iShares exchange traded funds (ETFs) gained more net flows than Vanguard's ETFs last year, according to estimates from industry tracker Morningstar, putting the world's biggest asset manager in the lead for the first time since 2019. Despite the yearly declines, net flows into ETFs, both globally and in the United States, were the second-highest ever last year, with BlackRock's iShares regaining the top position. Estimated net flows into BlackRock's global iShares ETFs amounted to about $220 billion last year against nearly $214 billion in estimated net flows into Vanguard's ETFs, according to Morningstar data. Net flows into Vanguard's ETFs had been higher in the prior two years. "For many investors, ETFs remained the vehicle of choice for low-cost, broadly diversified exposure to the stock and bond markets."

The combination of cooling prices and a less aggressive Fed could put pressure on a group of ETFs designed to counter inflation or rising rates — or both — that has attracted significant investor interest this year. Rising rate ETFs For example, the Simplify Interest Rate Hedge ETF (PFIX) , which has more than $350 million in assets under management, fell 2.8% on Tuesday. The FolioBeyond Rising Rates ETF (RISR) , which has raked in more than $80 million this year, was off 1.3%. Bet on falling rates, inflation? Treasury funds like the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) and Vanguard Intermediate Term Treasury ETF (VTIP) have expense ratios of 0.15% and 0.04%, respectively, and will rise in value as yields fall.
Wall Street is warning of a stormy start to 2023 , but investors should prepare to find pockets of opportunity and ensure their portfolio is running efficiently. Bond prices have tumbled alongside stocks, such that even the iShares Core Growth Allocation ETF – which is based on a 60/40 split between equities and fixed income – has dropped nearly 15%. Higher yields on fixed income The silver lining of the Federal Reserve's interest rate hiking campaign is the rising yield investors can find on even the most boring fixed income offerings. Bank of America is telling investors not to increase their stock investments until early 2023. It's telling investors which ETFs to buy to apply those themes in 2023 and beyond. So Woodard's group is telling investors that next year will be marked by a mild recession, lower inflation, and reduced corporate profits. Collectively, investors have poured $510 billion into equity ETFs this year, which is the second-highest on record according to BofA. In deciding which funds to buy next year, BofA first recommends that investors tack away from large, high-growth stocks.

For ETF investors bearing the brunt of a down market in 2022, tax-loss harvesting might offer a silver-lining opportunity to redeem some of this year's setbacks. The strategy allows investors to sell securities at a loss in order to offset those losses against capital gains taxes on other securities. Tierney, senior portfolio strategist at Schwab Asset Management Solutions, told Bob Pisani on CNBC's "ETF Edge" on Monday. "You have this opportunity before the end of the year to sell that fund, realize the loss, [and] stay invested by buying an aggregate bond ETF," he said. Tierney said he is also perceiving levels of increased interest in the strategy among ETF investors, pointing to telltale signs among advisors and clients at Schwab.
