Aug 1 (Reuters) - Molson Coors Beverage (TAP.N) on Tuesday raised its annual sales and profit forecasts, boosted by strong demand for its core brands Miller Lite and Coors Light. For the Americas segment, Molson Coors' net sales rose 10.7% in the second quarter as it shipped more premium beers. Molson Coors now expects full-year 2023 sales to grow in high single-digit percentage, on a constant currency basis. Annual underlying income before income taxes is expected to increase between 23% and 26%, on a constant-currency basis, compared with a low single-digit percentage increase forecast earlier. However, Molson Coors posted second-quarter sales of $3.27 billion, missing estimates of $3.29 billion, according to Refinitiv data.

More states, including Arizona, Colorado, Florida, New Mexico and Washington, are in the process of updating their water reuse regulations. In 2017, two California-based brewers produced limited-edition beers made from recycled water, to serve at local events. “When I got into the water industry, there was a lot of often-repeated tropes that the general public was just not ready for recycled water,” he says. There’s a mental perception that recycled water is not as clean as other sources of water. “You’re going to start hearing a lot more about a lot of different industries using recycled water for their products.

The series ended 2-2 after England won the final test at The Oval by 49 runs on Monday, so Australia retained the Ashes urn. "Yeah, we'll have a beer," McCullum said with a laugh when asked by reporters about his previous comments. "I can't imagine we'll be having a beer with them any time soon," McCullum told the BBC after the incident. "Ashes series have all these twists and turns and moments which people talk about and are able to remember them by, and that was certainly one of those," he said.

That’s a drastic change from the same quarter a year ago, when Bud Light sales were higher than Coors Light and Miller Light sales combined. Net income for the second quarter grew to $342 million, up from $47 million in the same period a year earlier. Since then, sales of Bud Light have been consistently falling by more than 20% every week (compared to the same week prior) since April. In May, the seemingly unthinkable happened: Modelo Especial displaced Bud Light from its top-selling spot in the United States for the first time, ending a roughly two-decade run for Bud Light. The beer giant is set to announce earnings — which will fully cover the Bud Light sales slide — on Thursday.

Heineken’s pricing goof has a strategic spillover
  + stars: | 2023-07-31 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
LONDON, July 31 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Dolf van den Brink has had a six-month-long happy hour. Heineken’s misstep occurred even though the company increased prices for its beers by an average of 13% from a year earlier. While consumer goods groups like Unilever (ULVR.L) managed to hike without losing much business, Heineken’s 6% hit to beer sales in the first half suggests van den Brink has not. In Vietnam, which analysts at Bernstein estimate accounts for nearly half of that region’s sales, Heineken admitted its pricing was mistimed. Van den Brink seems confident the worst is over for 2023, because all his price hikes have already happened.

Heineken cuts 2023 forecast on Vietnam slowdown
  + stars: | 2023-07-31 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Heineken said it has seen signs of slowdown in demand for its beer in some European markets after its third-quarter sales rose by less than expected. Heineken , the world's second-largest brewer by volume, on Monday cut its 2023 profit growth forecast after an economic slowdown in Vietnam depressed first-half earnings by more than expected. The Dutch company, whose brands include Tiger and Sol, said it now expected growth in operating profit before one-offs this year to be between zero and a mid single-digit percentage. Heineken said its results in Asia had been affected by an economic slowdown, notably in Vietnam, one of the company's largest markets, which is facing reduced global demand for its exports. Operating profit reduced by about a third.

The Dave Matthews Band is on tour, as they have been every summer, except 2020, for the past 30-odd years. Like the Grateful Dead and Phish, so-called jam bands with which it’s often lumped together, Dave Matthews has a deliriously passionate fan base that follows the band from city to city, reuniting with fellow disciples at preshow tailgates, showing off devotional tattoos, trading live recordings. In the early ’90s, when I arrived for my first year at the University of Virginia, Dave Matthews was a local celebrity. It would be years before the stereotype of Dave Matthews fans as “pot-smoking, tie-dye-touting former frat bros fawning over craft beers in parking lots between cornhole games,” as Perri Ormont Blumberg puts it, would become a widely understood social designation. We spent the next four years not going to Dave Matthews Band shows together.

More beers in America are being paired with lime than ever before. The story of how Modelo Especial, a Mexican lager, surpassed Bud Light as the top-selling beer in America predates the conservative backlash that Bud Light faced in April over a collaboration with a transgender influencer. Rather, the factors that, for the better part of a decade, put Modelo on its triumphant track include an increasing preference among American consumers for imported, more expensive beer; a decade-old antitrust deal; and effective marketing campaigns aimed at attracting young, non-Hispanic consumers to the Mexican beer. “Most people in the beer industry have assumed Modelo was going to overtake Bud Light at some point,” said Bart Watson, chief economist for the Brewers Association, a trade group representing over 6,000 American breweries. “It was a question of when, not if.”The switch occurred at the start of June, after Bud Light had held the No.

Partnering with a young, popular trans woman could help a brand like Bud Light reach a more youthful demographic. But because Bud Light managed to alienate everyone, it hasn’t gotten the benefit of a buycott. Modelo passed Bud Light, which has been the subject of a boycott by conservatives. It recently took the crown from Bud Light, which saw its market share drop to 7%. "Modelo and Michelob Ultra (another Anheuser-Busch brand) both were on track to eventually overtake Bud Light," Maloney wrote, citing long-term market share data. But recent economic pressures proved too much for the oldest craft brewer in the country: After 127 years, Anchor Brewing Company is shutting down. Anchor added that although it had stopped brewing, it would continue packing and distributing beer while available. In 2021, Anchor Brewing tried to adapt, rebranding and bottling and canning more of its beers to sell in grocery stores. But those changes “couldn’t make up for the significant loss of sales,” he added. In a last-ditch attempt to stay afloat, Anchor limited sales of its beer to California, and stopped producing one of its products, a Christmas ale.

The conveyor belt was ready, the empty bottles were stacked and the machinery was about to splutter into life. But one more step was needed before any beer bottling could get underway. That last step required a monk. Within a minute or two, Father Joseph Delargy appeared, dressed in the white robes of the Cistercian order, to bless the proceedings in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. And bottles of Britain’s only Trappist beer were soon rattling swiftly along the small production line.

Why Do Mosquitoes Like Me So Much?
  + stars: | 2023-07-03 | by ( Dani Blum | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Mosquitoes seek out carbon dioxide (which in part is why they’re so good at finding us), and the more we exhale, the more carbon dioxide we send into the air, inviting bugs our way. If you were to do a vigorous workout outside, you might breathe more heavily and exhale more carbon dioxide, which might usher in mosquitoes, Dr. Potter said. Sweat sends a powerful signal to mosquitoes too, Dr. McBride added — particularly sweat that’s lingered for a few hours, mixing with bacteria on our skin. And if you’ve had a few beach-side beers or happy hour margaritas, you might also emit some alcohol in your sweat, Dr. Bazzoli said, which can lure mosquitoes in. Some fragrant personal care products such as certain perfumes and scented soaps and lotions (including sunscreens) can attract mosquitoes, Dr. Bazzoli said, so if you’ll be spending time outdoors when mosquitoes are around, try to use products that are fragrance-free, and consider skipping the perfume completely.
