New York CNN —The United Auto Workers union is expanding its strike against GM and Stellantis but said that progress in negotiations with Ford means it won’t expand the number of Ford workers on the picket lines. “At noon Eastern today, all parts distributions centers at General Motors and Stellantis will be on strike,” he said. Still the announcement of progress at Ford raised hopes that the strike, at least at there, could be brought to a relatively quick end. But the UAW’s expanded strike is now targeting the parts distribution centers for GM and Stellantis. As of 10:30 am ET, Stellantis (STLA) is up 0.98%; Ford (F) is up 3.57%; and GM (GM) is up 0.7%.

United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain (center) marches with UAW members through downtown Detroit after a rally in support of the union's members as they strike the Big Three automakers, Detroit, Michigan, Sept. 15, 2023. DETROIT – Major automakers are calling into question the United Auto Workers' motives in launching targeted strikes in light of leaked messages by a union director calling to "keep them wounded for months." Ford communications chief Mark Truby said in a statement Friday the leaked messages are "disappointing, to say the least, given what is at stake for our employees, the companies and this region." In response to The Detroit News, Furman would not confirm writing the messages but according to the paper, called them "private messages" that "you shouldn't have." The leaked messages come as Fain on Friday announced additional plants the union plans to strike as part of its "stand-up strikes," a nod to historic "sit-down" strikes by the UAW in the 1930s.

Headwinds are piling up for the market heading into the final week of the month, as September lives up to its reputation as a horrible month for Wall Street. Wolfe Research's Rob Ginsberg pointed out in a note this week that the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) doesn't suggest much fear in markets. "We have a potential shutdown in Washington, as well as the UAW strike, which could potentially create some volatility in jobs data in particular." But investors heading into the final trading week of September will likely see a continuation of those losses, if history is any indication. "We could see the market experience additional weakness over the next several weeks," said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA.

NEW YORK (AP) — The United Auto Workers' strike is getting bigger. Currently, UAW workers hired after 2007 don’t receive defined-benefit pensions. During walkouts, workers are set to receive about $500 a week in strike pay — far short of what they earn while they’re working. During a 40-day UAW strike in 2019, GM lost $3.6 billion. The UAW strike is also testing President Joe Biden’s claim that he’s the most pro-union president in U.S. history.

Members of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union hold a practice picket in front of Stellantis headquarters in Auburn Hills, Michigan, on September 20, 2023. Regardless of the outcome, the United Auto Workers strike threatens to cause already high car prices to escalate. However, if the strike expands, or, alternatively, if the striking autoworkers' demands are met for a 40% pay raise along with other benefits, that could put pressure on automakers, dealers and, ultimately, car shoppers. Either way, consumers will pay more down the road, he added. "Inevitably yes, no matter what."

But union leaders say Trump's record in the White House speaks for itself. While the United Auto Workers union has withheld an endorsement in the 2024 presidential race, its leadership has repeatedly rebuffed Trump. Despite Trump's history of success in courting blue-collar workers in previous elections, union leaders say their members would do well to believe their own eyes. As president, Trump largely sat on the sidelines during a 40-day walkout at a General Motors plant in 2019. “President Trump has always been on the side of American workers,” his campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement.

Headline economic issues and benefits such as hourly pay, retirement benefits, cost-of-living adjustments, wage progression and work-life balance remain central to the discussions. Here's a general overview of where the union and companies stand on key issues. Wage tiers — putting autoworkers into distinct pay ranges or classifications — is a tricky, moving target. The companies and union have defined tiers differently during past negotiations as well as during the talks this year. UAW leaders are specifically concerned with vehicle production commitments at Stellantis, which has proposed closing, selling or consolidating 18 facilities.

DETROIT, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Talks were ongoing on Wednesday between union representatives and company management in the sixth day of the United Auto Workers strike at the Detroit Three automakers, a day after Ford (F.N) averted a walkout by Canadian workers. The UAW launched a strike against Ford, General Motors (GM.N) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI) last week, targeting one U.S. assembly plant at each company. The UAW's coordinated U.S. action led to about 12,700 workers going on strike last week. Ford reached a last-minute deal to avoid a walkout at its Canadian operations late on Tuesday. Unifor, which represents about 5,600 Canadian auto workers, had been threatening to go on strike at all three of Ford's plants in that country if a deal was not reached by late on Tuesday.

President Biden’s labor and environmental goals are colliding in the auto industry, where concerns over the electric vehicle transition underpin an autoworkers strike. But in states like Maine, unions and environmental groups have teamed up in an attempt to make a central promise of the president’s green agenda come true for workers. Mr. Biden has a favorite phrase when talking about the expansive climate bill he signed into law last year: “When I think climate — not a joke — I think jobs,” he said last month at the White House. “When I say climate means jobs, I mean good-paying union jobs.”That has not yet been the case for Mr. Biden’s agenda. Their efforts center on the development and deployment of offshore wind power, a sector that, like electric vehicles, is crucial to Mr. Biden’s economic and emissions goals.

Steven Cheung, a Trump spokesman, used expletives in calling Mr. DeSantis a “candidate that just steals from President Trump’s policy book” in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, during the governor’s remarks. In a lengthy, six-pronged policy outline, Mr. DeSantis promised to remove subsidies for electric vehicles, take the U.S. out of global climate agreements — including the Paris accords — and cancel net-zero emission promises. He also vowed to increase American oil and natural gas production and “replace the phrase climate change with energy dominance” in policy guidance. His remarks — delivered above the sounds of heavy machinery — paired standard Republican energy policy, blasting foreign energy dependence and blue state regulations, with criticism of the Biden administration’s focus on reducing carbon emissions and incentivizing clean energy. The Biden campaign criticized Mr. DeSantis’s plan.

New York CNN —Looming over the United Auto Workers strike: Automakers’ continued migration to the anti-union South. Jobs at nonunion EV battery facilities pay less than the roughly $32 an hour that veteran UAW workers make. Since 1990, the South’s share of auto jobs has doubled from around 15% to 30% today, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. Mostly nonunion EV jobs and manufacturing investments are surging in Southern states led by Republicans. The South has picked up 66% of planned EV jobs, while projects in Midwestern states such as Michigan, Indiana, Kansas and Ohio have combined for 26% of planned jobs, according to S&P Global.

Several Republican presidential candidates have gone on the attack against unions in response to the United Auto Workers' strike, despite strong support for organized labor among the American public. Sen. Tim Scott on Monday said striking workers should be fired, saying he would emulate President Ronald Reagan who terminated more than 11,000 striking air traffic controllers in 1981. Haley said President Joe Biden had "emboldened" the UAW by proclaiming he is the "most pro-union president in American history." The UAW strike also enjoys solid support with 54% of U.S. adults approving the work stoppage, according to a Morning Consult poll. The autoworkers strike could escalate ahead of the Republican primary debate next week at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.

TOKYO (AP) — Asian shares declined Wednesday as markets awaited a decision on interest rates by the Federal Reserve. Trade data for Japan showed exports fell 0.8% last month from a year ago, marking the second straight month of declines, as exports to China lagged, dropping 11%. Markets have see-sawed for weeks on uncertainty about whether the Fed is done with its market-shaking hikes to interest rates. The Fed began its latest meeting on interest rates Tuesday, with an announcement scheduled for Wednesday. Traders are split on whether the Fed may raise rates again this year, but they’re largely expecting the Fed to begin cutting rates next year.

Lana Payne speaks to delegates after being elected as president of UNIFOR, Canada's largest private sector union, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on Aug. 10, 2022. The Canadian tentative agreement was reached on day five of the United Auto Workers union initiating targeted strikes against Ford and its crosstown rivals General Motors and Chrysler-parent Stellantis . DETROIT – Ford Motor avoided having to face labor strikes on both sides of the U.S.-Canada border Tuesday night, as the automaker and Canadian union Unifor announced a tentative deal covering 5,600 autoworkers in the country's Ontario providence. Unifor, which represents 18,000 Canadian workers at the Detroit automakers, took a more traditional approach to its negotiations than its U.S. counterpart did. The Canadian union picked Ford as its "target" company instead of following the UAW's new strategy of bargaining with all three automakers.

Thousands of United Auto Workers members are striking against three major Detroit automakers — Ford, GM and Stellantis — at plants across the U.S. Autoworkers at Ford Motor Company were among the first to adopt a five-day, 40-hour workweek in 1926 at a time when people regularly topped 100 hours per week. By 1938, the Fair Labor Standards Act cut the workweek to 44 hours, then down to 40 hours two years later. "I think it will move the public toward thinking the four-day workweek is the appropriate workweek," Creighton says.

The Biden administration is no longer sending two key officials to Detroit this week to potentially help broker a deal between striking autoworkers and the Big Three car companies, a White House official told NBC News. But the White House and the UAW mutually agreed it would be better to speak virtually via Zoom, the official said Tuesday. "We'll continue to assess travel timing based on the active state of negotiations," the White House official said. The union's president, Shawn Fain, told MSNBC on Monday that he does not see a major role for the White House in resolving the dispute. Trump is planning to skip the GOP primary debate next week and instead travel to Detroit to speak with union members.

That means most current executives, who came up in the era of easy money, are unfamiliar with the complexities of running a bank under today’s conditions. Some CEOs are deciding that they need to make drastic, expensive and often unpopular institutional changes to help them keep up. Banks currently have strong managers, but not a lot of strong leaders, said David Schiff, senior partner at West Monroe. Prior to the current interest rate hikes, banks had been operating with low-interest, stable rates for nearly two decades, he said. CNN —The union representing Canadian autoworkers at Ford has reached a tentative deal with the US automaker, keeping more than 5,000 union members on the job and providing some good news for an industry dealing with unprecedented labor disruptions. Details of the deal between Ford and Unifor, the Canadian union, were not immediately available. “We leveraged our union’s most powerful weapon: the right to strike,” Unifor said in its statement Tuesday evening. The issues in the Canadian labor negotiations greatly mirrored the issues behind the UAW strike against those three automakers. The companies, which are reporting record or near-record profits, all say they have offered the UAW members raises totaling about 20% during the life of the contracts, including immediate 10% raises.

Since the start of the pandemic, labor unions have enjoyed something of a renaissance. They have made inroads into previously nonunion companies like Starbucks and Amazon, and won unusually strong contracts for hundreds of thousands of workers. Last year, public approval for unions reached its highest level since the Lyndon Johnson presidency. Strikes by railroad workers and UPS employees, which had the potential to rattle the U.S. economy, were averted at the last minute. The strike by the United Automobile Workers, whose members walked off the job at three plants on Friday, is shaping up to be such a test.

A Unifor strike would disrupt Ford's Oakville Assembly Plant that produces the Ford Edge and Lincoln Nautilus crossovers. Gasoline V8 models make up about 50% of Mustang and 20% of F-150 models sold in the U.S. Large F-Series trucks exclusively have V8 engines. But a majority of those vehicles sold have diesel V8 engines rather than gasoline, according to the company. Former Vice President Mike Pence argued Tuesday that the Biden administration's push toward electric vehicles was to blame for the historic United Auto Workers strikes underway at the Big Three Detroit carmakers' plants. "I guarantee you that one of the things that's driving that strike is that Bidenomics and their green energy, electric vehicle agenda is good for Beijing and bad for Detroit, and American autoworkers know it," Pence said on CNBC's "Squawk Box." The strikes are a "reflection of the failed economic policies of the Biden administration," said Pence, whose campaign to win the 2024 Republican presidential has struggled to gain traction in the polls. "This drive toward electric vehicles, driving people away from gasoline-powered vehicles, any auto worker that's paying attention would know that's not in their long-term interest," he said. Pence's stance on the strikes echoed the one pushed by his former boss, ex-President Donald Trump, the current front-runner in the GOP nomination contest.
