New York CNN —Members of the Dartmouth College men’s basketball team Tuesday became the first college athletes to vote to join a union, a significant milestone in the rapidly changing business for collegiate sports. The team members voted 13-2 in favor of the union, according to the National Labor Relations Board, which oversees union representation votes for private employers. The affirmative vote does not automatically mean that there will be a union for members of the the team. Clark, 22, earned the women's record Feb. 15 when she scored eight points in a game against Michigan and passed Kelsey Plum's 3,527 career points in her career, which ended in 2017. She put up 33 points against Minnesota on Wednesday to cement her place atop the all-time career points among women to play for major colleges. Henry Rono, a Kenyan distance runner who was unable to walk until he was 6 after a gruesome injury to his right leg when he was a toddler but went on to break four world records in just 81 days in 1978, died on Thursday in Nairobi. His death was announced by Athletics Kenya, an amateur athletic association. He died in a hospital, where he had spent 10 days with an unspecified illness. Rono was twice denied shots at Olympic glory in his 20s, when Kenya joined boycotts of the Games in 1976 and 1980. Even so, he was celebrated as one of the country’s great athletes.

Nairobi, Kenya CNN —Kenyan politicians and leaders in sports gathered on Friday for a funeral service celebrating the life of marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum, who died in a road accident last Sunday. Kiptum, 24, and his coach Gervais Hakizimana died at the scene of the crash outside the Rift Valley town of Eldoret, police said. Kiptum’s widow, Asenath Cheruto, led the ceremony and paid tribute to her late husband with a moving speech. CNN —A proposed format change could shake-up the long jump at major track and field competitions, but will the idea take flight? That’s the big question for those involved in athletics right now, notably nine-time Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis. The new format, which has been put forward by World Athletics chief executive Jon Ridgeon, could see athletes jump from a take-off zone, rather than a take-off board, essentially doing away with foul jumps. “The long jump is the most difficult event in track and field,” Lewis said in a separate post. Judges inspect the take-off board at the 2012 London Olympics.
