What are the economics of war?
  + stars: | 2024-08-07 | by ( Gaelle Legrand | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Last March, Thierry Breton, the EU's commissioner for internal market, advocated for a shift of the European defense industry toward a war economy. Europe is facing an "existential threat," he said, as the Commission announced a new defense strategic plan, with a minimum of €1.5 billion ($1.6 billion) subsidy to boost the continent's war machine. In Germany, arms maker Rheinmetall inaugurated a new factory in February that will produce artillery ammunition, explosives and rockets. Aerospace and defense company Kongsberg also opened a new anti-ship and cruise missile manufacturing plant in Norway last June. Watch the video above to learn more about the economics of war.

Glide bombs are equipped with special kits that convert dumb bombs into precision-guided munitions. The glide bombs are almost impossible to intercept because they have small radar signatures, travel on non-ballistic trajectories, and have fairly short flight times. Eugenicists used photographs and IQ tests to determine which people were "inferior," and sterilized those who didn't measure up — which usually turned out to be anyone who wasn't white and rich. Before he worked with photographs, Kosinski was interested in Facebook. It's just picking up on the way gay people present themselves on dating sites — which, not surprisingly, is often very different from the way straight people present themselves to potential partners. Kosinski thinks AI's ability to make the kind of personality judgments he studies will only get better. That is the future Kosinski fears — even as he continues to tinker with the very models that prove it will come to pass.

Ukrainian military says it attacked Russian airfield, oil depots
  + stars: | 2024-08-03 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Ukraine's military said on Saturday it had attacked Russia's Morozovsk airfield and a number of oil depots and fuel storage facilities in three Russian regions overnight. The attack on the airfield hit an ammunition depot where Russian forces stored guided aerial bombs among other equipment, the military said. The attack on oil depots and fuel and lubricant storage facilities in Belgorod, Kursk and Rostov regions set fire to at least two oil tanks, according to the Ukrainian military report. The regional governor of Belgorod also said Ukraine-launched drones caused a fire at an oil storage depot there, adding that the fire was extinguished and no one was injured. Ukraine has dramatically stepped up its use of long-range drones this year to attack Russian oil facilities, attempting to damage sites fueling Russian forces and the country's economy in Moscow's 29-month-old invasion.

Kyiv, Ukraine CNN —Russia has launched one of the largest drone attacks on Ukraine since the war began, mainly targeting overnight the region in and around the capital Kyiv, according to the Ukrainian military, which said all 89 drones fired were shot down. Dramatic video released by the Ukrainian Air Force shows one drone on fire, falling from the sky and landing in a field — causing a large cloud of smoke but no visible damage. “Just like then, today the Ukrainian air defense has withstood and repelled a massive attack by enemy drones,” he said. Since then, Ukraine has repeatedly pleaded for allies to provide more air defense systems. We need sufficiently courageous decisions from our partners — enough air defense systems, enough range,” Zelensky added.

CNN —The Biden administration announced on Monday a new lethal aid package for Ukraine totaling about $1.7 billion and largely consisting of missiles and ammunition for missile, artillery and air defense systems the US has previously provided to Ukraine. The administration says this is their 20th “USAI package and sixty-second tranche of equipment to be provided from DoD inventories for Ukraine and since August 2021,” according to the release. The USAI package includes missiles for Ukraine’s National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS), a key air defense platform. It also includes ammunition for Ukraine’s High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), a weapons platform that Ukraine has recently been using to strike effectively in Russian territory. U.S. Arms Transfers to Israel Since October 7 Recent U.S. decisions to withhold certain arms transfers to Israel, resume others, and the inconsistent reporting around those decisions highlight the challenges of accounting for vital resupplies to help Israel wage an unexpected, prolonged, multifront, munitions-intensive conflict. JINSA has produced an infographic detailing publicly-listed U.S. military assistance to Israel since October 7, including withheld supplies. JINSA Because arms deliveries are not publicly disclosed, it is difficult to assess exactly which supplies the United States agreed to send since October 7, versus sales that were contracted before that date and delivered afterward - nor is this list likely to be exhaustive, given backlogged and incomplete reporting of agreed arms transfers by the Pentagon. Reuters —Germany plans to halve its military aid to Ukraine next year, despite concerns that US support for Kyiv could potentially diminish if Republican candidate Donald Trump returns to the White House. German aid to Ukraine will be cut to €4 billion ($4.35 billion) in 2025 from around €8 billion in 2024, according to a draft of the 2025 budget seen by Reuters. Germany has faced criticism for repeatedly missing a NATO target of spending 2% of its economic output on defense. Days after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced a “Zeitenwende” – German for historic turning point - with a €100 billion special fund to bring the military up to speed. The defense budget is set to receive a meagre €1.3 billion more than in 2024, far below the €6.7 billion requested by Pistorius.

CNN —Many of America’s closest allies were already dreading the prospect of Donald Trump’s return to the White House. Now that the former president has picked JD Vance as his running mate, they potentially have a lot more to worry about. By choosing Vance, Trump has sent a clear signal that, if elected, his America-first foreign policy will be back in force. “JD Vance does not appear to be interested in being a good ally to Europe,” Berzina said. Yet nearly 48 hours after the shooting, investigators are struck by the lack of leads they’re finding about Crooks’ mindset and possible motives. Russian forces over the weekend pushed into Urozhaine, a southern village won back by Ukraine last summer, the latest in a series of slow but steady advances that are reversing hard-won Ukrainian victories. The Russian advances are a sobering development for Kyiv as its troops battle to contain attacks along a more than 600-mile front line. They have entered the outskirts of Chasiv Yar, a Ukrainian stronghold in the region, and are closing in on a key Ukrainian supply route. Ukraine hopes that weapons and ammunition recently supplied by Western allies will help it hold back Russian forces. That has already happened in the northeast, where beefed up Ukrainian defenses have managed to halt a Russian offensive that threatened Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.
