The United States announced it is sending an advanced anti-missile system and a number of troops to Israel, deepening America's involvement in the spiraling conflict as the region readies for Israeli retaliatory strikes against Iran. The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, known as THAAD, usually requires about 100 troops to operate, and has six truck mounted launchers, with eight interceptors on each launcher, as well as a powerful radar. Retired Brigadier General Zvika Haimovich, former head of the Israeli Air Defense, said Israel expected even an bigger barrage of missiles from Iran in "the next phase," after Tehran fired more than 180 missiles at Israel on Oct 1. But the presence of U.S. equipment and troops inside Israel would deepen the nation's involvement in the crisis. The arrival of THAAD and U.S. support might ease the burden on Israel's defense system, but Israel's latest reliance on its allies for protection may also speak to the cracks in its often impenetrable armor.

On July 6, thousands of anti-tourism protesters marched through the streets of Barcelona, shouting: "Tourists go home!" Tourists caught in the crossfire of Barcelona's July protest — some of whom endured water guns and confrontations caught on tape — may not be inclined to return. And the top three most popular destinations were the very spots where protesters staged marches this year. A spokesperson for Barcelona's City Council told CNBC Travel that managing the city's tourism is one its main priorities since it is "reaching a limit with 17 million visitors per year." Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris face off in the ABC presidential debate on Sept. 10, 2024. The previous Trump administration didn't pursue those types of consumer protections. In contrast, Democrats, including Harris, have historically supported EVs and incentives such as those under the Biden administration's signature Inflation Reduction Act. Meanwhile, Harris, if elected, can build on existing efforts of the Biden administration to deliver savings to more patients, they said. Trump also led multiple efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, including its expansion of Medicaid to low-income adults.

This time of year typically tests nerves, more so when — as now — an election is onrushing and the S & P 500 was already up 20% for the year. Since June 30, the equal-weighted S & P 500 has gained 9.5%, more than triple the Nasdaq 100's rise. A buyer at the mid-July S & P 500 peak of 5667 sustained a quick 8% tumble in three weeks. Goldman Sachs calculated VIX being this elevated with the S & P 500 calmly clicking to record highs is essentially unheard-of. Cash that's still yielding well more than inflation and bonds holding their value allow investors to shoulder higher equity exposures rather than rotating out.

Jamie Dimon said he expects to stay at JPMorgan "for a long period" rather than join the government. One way that Dimon might do that after stepping down as CEO is to stay on as chairman. "I intend to be doing what I'm doing — I almost guarantee I'll be doing this — for a long period of time, or at least until the board kicks me out," he said. (The firm has previously said it intends to separate the CEO and chairman roles after Dimon steps down.) The Wells Fargo analyst on Friday suggested Dimon has been commenting on government pontifications in the past year more than at any other time in his career, raising questions about his political aspirations.
