Ron Shaich spent roughly two decades building Panera Bread into nationwide behemoth, ultimately selling it for $7.5 billion in 2017. The Panera co-founder, 69, credits that success to a simple practice, which he did — and still does — once per year, he tells CNBC Make It: writing a "pre-mortem." Between Christmas and his December 30 birthday, Shaich dedicates a day or two to visualize himself at the end of his life, he says. He writes a news story, obituary or journal entry from that hypothetical future, looking back on his own endeavors, listing only the most important accomplishments. Then, he maps out how to get from his current state to that future version of himself.

“Dating on the apps, it’s ruined dating a bit,” Nguyen-Don, who works as a digital marketing manager, said. “The… design of those dating apps should definitely be held accountable for this kind of dating culture,” Zhou said. His experiences on dating apps were positive, he said, and he valued the ways they introduced him to new people and new experiences. Dating apps know this. For all their flaws, dating apps are unlikely to disappear any time soon.

A professional actor since his teens, Perry had appeared in more than a dozen sitcoms before landing “Friends” in 1994. Mostly it advertised Perry and his anxious, reckless charm. Even among the irrepressible talents of his co-stars, Perry stood out, for a rubbery, heedless way with physical comedy and a split-second timing that most stopwatches would envy. He had both an absolute commitment to what a line required and a way of gently ironizing that line. Perry was in on those same jokes.

The most successful people in life can recognize a window of opportunity, and know when and how to seize it. It's not unlike surfing, according to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. A "surfer's mindset" can help you succeed in both life and business, Ohanian told students in a keynote address at his alma mater, the University of Virginia, last week. As he rose through the ranks at Barcelona, Gerard Deulofeu seemed to have everything. Luis Enrique, his manager, regarded him as his “standout.” He was fast-tracked into the senior side at the age of just 17. Deulofeu, though, never quite made it at Barcelona, not really. He felt Luis Enrique, previously such an ardent advocate, did not “trust” him now that he was in charge of the senior team. Deulofeu played six times for Barcelona, and was sold.

This faux-leather jacket is made by bacteria

“A yellow leather jacket” might not be your first answer, but it’s exactly what came out of a collaboration between Danish fashion brand Ganni and Mexican biomaterials company Polybion. “We were impressed by the fact that a lot of people love the jacket because the material did not resemble leather,” said Alexis Gómez-Ortigoza, Polybion’s co-founder. “We isolated our first bacteria from that drink.”Kombucha is an increasingly popular fermented tea drink, and the bacterial biomass used to make the jacket, called Celium, comes from that jar. “We feed the bacteria with fruit waste, which is extremely abundant here in central Mexico,” said Gómez-Ortigoza. Although it shares some similarities with leather, Celium is an organic material that's meant to have its own look and feel.

Lean In's CEO said fixing the "broken rung" would mean more women representation in the work pipeline. The report found that "for every 100 men promoted from entry level to manager, 87 women were promoted." "While we have this laser focus typically on the glass ceiling, what we need is a laser focus on the broken rung," Alexis Krivkovich, a senior partner for McKinsey, told Insider. "While companies are increasing women's representation at the top, doing so without addressing the broken rung offers only a temporary stopgap," the report stated. LONDON, Oct 8 (Reuters) - Arsenal moved level on points with neighbours Tottenham Hotspur at the top of the Premier League after beating champions Manchester City on Sunday as Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw at Brighton & Hove Albion. Mohammed Kudus scored an 89th-minute equaliser to earn West Ham a point against Newcastle United in a 2-2 draw and Aston Villa stayed fifth in the standings after drawing 1-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Arsenal came into the match having not beaten City in the league since 2015, a run of 15 games -- their longest winless streak against a single opponent in league history. Arsenal did not have a single shot on target in the opening period, but upped the tempo after the break. West Ham retained their grip on seventh place while Newcastle are eighth, a point behind.

Gabriel Martinelli's late goal handed Arsenal a 1-0 win over defending champion Manchester City on Sunday, ending a 12-game losing streak in the league against Pep Guardiola's team in the process. City pipped Arsenal to the title by five points last term, in part by beating the Gunners 3-1 away and 4-1 at home. In fact, Arsenal had not taken a point against City in the league since 2017, its longest losing streak against a single opponent in club history. City as a team only had four shots in the game, its lowest total ever under Guardiola in a Premier League game. Miss USA 2023: Noelia Voigt of USA wins pageant

Following a recent rule change implemented by the Miss Universe Organization, this year’s Miss USA featured the first married state titleholder — Juliana Morehouse-Locklear of Maine. (Morehouse-Locklear, the daughter of a contestant in the 1994 Miss USA pageant, did not advance to the top 20.) Miss USA R'Bonney Gabriel is crowned the 2022 Miss Universe on January 14 in New Orleans. Gabriel’s win at the 2022 Miss USA pageant was marred by claims made by some of her fellow contestants that the pageant had been “rigged” in her favor. In the weeks after her crowning in October 2022, Miss USA’s parent company, the Miss Universe Organization, opened an investigation and suspended then-Miss USA national director Crystle Stewart — winner of the 2008 Miss USA pageant — and her company, Miss Brands.

Though the sprawling Escondida mine could continue to operate even if supervisors walked off the job, a strike could lead to production bottlenecks or slowdowns. "I have no doubt that the strike will win," union head Alexis Barrera said in an interview, adding that nearly all members have already cast their votes. The union accuses BHP of looking to reduce benefits and production bonuses while extending working hours. Chile's powerful Union 1 workers' union said it would stand in solidarity with the Escondida supervisors and ensure that no "illegal replacements" came on the job in the event of a work stoppage.
