The case has provided an unusual view of how the ultrawealthy use the art market to evade taxes, and sometimes worse. In order to prove that Alec and Guy misled Sylvia about her husband’s estate, Dumont Beghi first needed to know what assets they did report. Dumont Beghi’s first step, then, was to ask a court to nullify the agreement Sylvia signed giving up her inheritance. Only then could she access details about Daniel’s estate. Dumont Beghi didn’t believe that figure was anywhere near the estate’s true value, but still, “It’s not nothing, for someone who died broke.” And it showed, Dumont Beghi concluded, that Sylvia had renounced her inheritance under false pretenses.

A forensics expert hired to examine the gun that discharged while Alec Baldwin was rehearsing with it on the set of the film “Rust” in New Mexico, killing the movie’s cinematographer, has issued a new report that determined the actor must have pulled the trigger, a conclusion at odds with his account. Since the fatal shooting of the cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, in October 2021, Mr. Baldwin has said that he had pulled the hammer back and let it go just before the gun discharged, maintaining that he did not pull the trigger. Prosecutors have been skeptical of his claim that he did not pull the trigger, and in January Mr. Baldwin was charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the case. A new set of prosecutors dismissed the charges against him in April, saying new evidence suggested that the gun Mr. Baldwin had been rehearsing with that day might have been modified, potentially making an unintentional discharge easier. The prosecutors said at the time that they would consider refiling charges against the actor after a new examination of the gun.

At the time, special prosecutors Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis said Baldwin could still face culpability and charges could be refiled. “The charges against Alec Baldwin were dismissed without prejudice because a possible malfunction of the gun significantly affects causation with regard to Baldwin, not with regard to Gutierrez. If it is determined that the gun did not malfunction, charges against Mr. Baldwin will proceed. When reached by CNN Wednesday, Morrissey said charges against Baldwin are still being considered and a final decision had not been made. According to the report attached to Gutierrez Reed’s motion, the experts say the trigger was in fact pulled on the weapon, which Baldwin has consistently denied.

The armorer who loaded the gun that discharged on the set of the film “Rust” in New Mexico, killing its cinematographer, is set to stand trial on involuntary manslaughter and evidence tampering charges starting Dec. 6. The armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, entered a plea of not guilty to the charges on Wednesday after attempts by her lawyer to dismiss the case were unsuccessful. Ms. Gutierrez-Reed, 26, was accused by prosecutors in court papers of deviating from the protocols governing the use of firearms on film sets. Those rounds were supposed to be dummy rounds, inert cartridges that are used to make guns appear loaded for the camera. They also accused her of not properly responding to previous accidental discharges of blanks on set in the days leading up to the tragedy.

Walker (13-4) threw 95 pitches over seven innings, giving up seven hits and a walk. The Royals put Walker in a 3-0 hole straight away, tagging him for five hits in the first inning. MJ Melendez slashed a two-out, opposite-field shot to left in the top of the second, putting the Royals ahead again, 4-3. With the blast against the Royals, Schwarber has now homered against all 30 MLB teams in his nine-year career, joining teammate Nick Castellanos, who accomplished the feat earlier this season. Harper tacked on an insurance run in the seventh with a long sacrifice fly to score Schwarber and Philadelphia led 8-4.
