BRUSSELS, May 17 (Reuters) - Korean Air Lines's (003490.KS) proposed acquisition of rival Asiana (020560.KS) may restrict competition in passenger and cargo air transport services between Europe and South Korea, EU antitrust regulators said on Wednesday. The European Commission said it had sent a statement of objections outlining its concerns, confirming a Reuters story last week. The EU competition enforcer said it had sought feedback from rival airlines, potential market entrants and customers on the potential impact of the deal. "The transaction may reduce competition in the provision of passenger transport services on four routes between South Korea and France, Germany, Italy and Spain," it said in a statement. It said the deal may also reduce competition in the provision of cargo transport services between all of Europe and South Korea.
Boston-based Tomorrow.io began as a software company that offered hyper-precise, street-level weather forecasting. The company recently launched Tomorrow-R1, what it claims is the world's first commercially built weather-radar satellite, via SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket. Tomorrow.io used proprietary software not just to predict but also to help companies plan for severe weather. The new radar satellite, however, will offer a much broader scope of data. But the union representing most US airline pilots urged Congress against changing pilot qualification and training standards in an attempt to address the pilot shortage, saying some ideas would compromise safety. The Regional Airline Association, representing carriers that connect major cities to smaller regional airports, noted that the airlines are not the only destination for pilots with that qualification and warned of a significant pilot shortage that will get worse with a “tsunami” of retirements. MEXICO CITY, April 13 (Reuters) - The airport operating business in Mexico is thriving as traffic surges due to multinational companies bringing overseas operations closer to home and growth at Mexican airlines, according to the head of GAP, which operates 12 airports in the country. Manufacturing hubs such as Guadalajara have seen record traffic growth due to the relocation trend, called nearshoring, CEO Raul Revuelta told Reuters in an interview late Wednesday. "But it's also Mexican airlines, VivaAerobus, Volaris, Aeromexico, expanding their fleets, which allows them to open new routes and move more passengers." The downgrade has prevented Mexican airlines from opening new routes to the United States, limiting expansion plans. ALMATY, March 29 (Reuters) - Kazakhstan's flagship airline, Air Astana, is speeding up its expansion plans to take advantage of a drop in air traffic via Russia and the reopening of China, chief executive Peter Foster told Reuters. Many global airlines stopped flights to Russia after it invaded Ukraine last year. The company plans to grow its fleet to 50 aircraft by the end of this year from the current 44 aircraft, Foster said, and is accelerating expansion plans for the coming years. "We see very big opportunities in China, as China has opened again, following COVID, India is doing well.., Pakistan is a growth market." "And that's been resolved, we have no problem with accessing spare parts,"Kazakhstan's sovereign wealth fund, which owns a 51% stake in Air Astana, plans to list the company publicly next year.

WASHINGTON, March 21 (Reuters) - A group of seven U.S. senators on Tuesday proposed legislation to raise the mandatory commercial pilot retirement age to 67 from 65, in a bid to address airline industry staffing issues. The proposal, which would require pilots over age 65 to pass a rigorous medical screening every six months, follows complaints of pilot shortages by many regional airlines. The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) opposes proposals to increase the retirement age. Graham previously noted that in 2007 the United States raised the mandatory retirement age from 60 to 65, and "the sky did not fall." Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has previously said he does not support raising the pilot retirement age.
