While many AI companies have focused on training large language models, Groq seeks to make them run as fast as possible using chips it developed called LPUs, or language processing units. The gambit is that as AI models get better, inference — the part where the AI makes decisions or answers questions — will demand more computing power than training will, positioning Groq to reap the rewards. Groq's special (and tightly patented) sauce is its specialized chip design says Ross. Dean asked Ross's team to design a chip based on a specific type of integrated circuit they were using, and the result was Google's first tensor processing unit, a chip designed specifically for AI. Watching the AlphaGo program land a complex "shoulder hit" move on its opponent was validation for Ross that faster inference meant better, smarter AI.

CNN —Beyoncé will appear alongside Vice President Kamala Harris at a rally Friday in Houston, a person familiar with the planning tells CNN, the first joint appearance with the music icon whose anthem has been the soundtrack of the Harris campaign. The appearance, in which Beyoncé will appear with Willie Nelson, is designed to be one of the biggest closing acts of the campaign. Beyoncé all but gave her endorsement to Harris months ago, giving her permission to use her song “Freedom” as her official campaign anthem, CNN first reported in July. At one point, rumors of Beyoncé appearing at the Democratic convention threatened to overtake Harris’ acceptance speech. During her remarks, the vice president is expected to warn of the threat a second Trump term poses to women’s reproductive freedom.

EV supporters point to dozens of new EV and battery plants announced in Michigan in the last two years. Political strategists told Business Insider that the anti-EV messaging was drowning out positive ones in Michigan, putting Democrats on the defensive in a critical battleground. "We've run some advertising trying to make the massive surge of new EV manufacturing at jobs in Michigan famous, because nobody knows about them," Murphy said. But that analysis didn't account for jobs created by new EV and battery manufacturing plants popping up across the country. Democrats are hitting back on Republicans' EV attacks, arguing that the US has to build its own domestic EV manufacturing base to compete with China.

Steiner is Meta's vice president of monetization infrastructure, ranking, and AI foundations. AI and machine learning have been key to Meta's recent resurgence, particularly in areas like ad targeting and measurement that were hampered by Apple's 2021 privacy update. His team works on innovations like large AI models that can support multiple inputs and prediction outputs across different advertiser goals, like clicks or sales. It's also integrating AI into Meta's self-service Ads Manager product to help advertisers drive better performance. Meta said in July that more than 1 million advertisers had used at least one of its generative AI ad features in the past month.

CNN —A new CNN investigation documents how political campaigns have deceived the elderly and people with dementia with badgering, personalized text messages and prechecking boxes for recurring donations. Read the report, which illustrates the aggressive text messaging and charts how recurring donations can add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars drained from retirement savings. The team spent a significant chunk of that time gathering and reviewing the stories of elderly donors from a variety of sources: public records, complaints filed with government agencies, lawsuits and cold-calling donors. RAPPARD: Experts we spoke to told us that elderly donors are the backbone of grassroots fundraising efforts. It became clear to us throughout our reporting process the kind of effect these tactics were having on elderly donors.

Ron DeSantis penned the cease-and-desist letters sent by Florida’s health department threatening to criminally prosecute local TV stations over their airing of an abortion rights ad, the department’s former general counsel said in court documents. “I did not draft the letters or participate in any discussions about the letters prior to October 3,” Wilson wrote. Spokespersons for DeSantis and the Florida Department of Health did not immediately respond to CNN requests for comment. Wilson’s allegations come after local TV stations began airing an ad by Floridians Protecting Freedom, the group behind the state’s “Yes on 4 Campaign,” promoting a ballot measure seeking to overturn the state’s six-week abortion ban by enshrining abortion rights in the state’s constitution. Local TV stations also received support from FCC chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel, who said earlier this month that “threats against broadcast stations for airing content that conflicts with the government’s views are dangerous and undermine the fundamental principle of free speech.”

Washington CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris often touts how she took on the “big banks” as attorney general of California to deliver mortgage relief to homeowners hit by the 2008 foreclosure crisis. The oft-repeated story references how Harris helped negotiate a multistate mortgage settlement with five of the nation’s biggest banks that delivered financial relief to homeowners and set standards for lenders. Harris also secured a separate agreement with three of the banks, guaranteeing a certain amount of relief for California homeowners. Mortgage relief for homeownersAs a result of the national settlement, mortgage relief was delivered to homeowners in several different forms, such as principal reductions, interest rates cuts, other kinds of loan modifications or short sales. There were also some direct payments sent to people who wrongfully lost their homes to foreclosure, according to the National Mortgage Settlement website.
