Emergency workers and researchers use the term “critical incident” to describe a traumatic event. I’ve been compelled to explore mental health issues — and their potential solutions — ever since. Research has found that throughout a career, an emergency worker may experience over 180 critical incidents. While observing emergency workers in this documentary, I was amazed by their ability to work so calmly through crises and transition quickly in and out of their home lives. I wrote previously that the American West has some of the nation’s worst outcomes for behavioral health issues such as substance abuse and suicide.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin voters are set to decide next month whether to make it unconstitutional to accept private grant money to help administer state elections, one of two Republican-backed ballot measures that Democrats say are meant to make it harder to conduct elections in the presidential battleground state. The Wisconsin measures are supported by Republicans and conservative groups and opposed by an array of government watchdog and liberal groups including the American Civil Liberties Union, Common Cause Wisconsin, Wisconsin Conservation Voters and the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin. Three courts and the bipartisan Wisconsin Elections Commission rejected complaints challenging the legality of the grant money. It’s unclear how adoption of the amendment would change current practice, other than place requirements currently in state law into the constitution. Federal law already requires U.S. citizenship to vote in national elections and no state constitutions explicitly allow noncitizens to vote in state or local elections.

"It all comes down to longevity," Mary Beth Franklin, a certified financial planner and Social Security expert, said Thursday at Financial Advisor Magazine's annual Invest in Women conference in West Palm Beach, Florida. Her dropping out of the race would leave former President Donald Trump the only remaining major candidate in the running to obtain the GOP nomination. Hayley had a relatively poor showing on Super Tuesday itself, losing to Trump in 14 of the 15 voting states. Earlier in the race, Haley's best bet to win the nomination was outlasting Trump in the hope he'd drop out of the race amid his slew of ongoing legal issues. A more likely pick, as Trump himself previously suggested, would be Sen. Tim Scott, Vivek Ramaswamy, or South Dakota Gov.

While cooling inflation and a robust GDP reading that smashed economists’ expectations are reasons to be optimistic about the US economy, one key economic engine seems to still be sputtering: small businesses. Small business owners say they’re still grappling with the hangover effects of inflation and a labor shortage, according to the National Federation of Independent Business’s most recent monthly survey, which was conducted in January. Dougherty said small businesses may be delayed in feeling the effect of easing inflation, but once businesses experience more prolonged stable prices, that may help their sentiment turn around. A recent survey of American Express small business customers indicated that some small business owners see strength in 2024. Half of the 557 US small businesses surveyed said they plan to grow or expand their businesses in the upcoming year.
