The sustainability theme faces an uncertain future under President-elect Donald Trump, but Morgan Stanley has named a number stocks with major upside. Here are two of Morgan Stanley's top stocks with over 60% upside potential: EDP Renovaveis The investment bank is bullish on EDP Renovaveis and has a target price of 18 euros ($18.68), giving it nearly 66% upside potential. AdvertisementTrump has been hard on EVs, but a new friendship with Elon Musk could change things. So far, Musk supports Trump's plans to dismantle EV tax credits. Automakers had hoped that Musk would support EV regulations and tax credits, but it appears the CEO is siding with Trump for now. An industry group representing many automakers (but not Tesla) pleaded with Trump to preserve EV tax credits but reconsider some of the more stringent emissions regulations. This was an about-face from Musk's stance a few months earlier when he advocated for trade barriers and warned that Chinese EV companies would "demolish" competition without guardrails.

Six travelers have died from suspected methanol poisoning after visiting the tourist town of Vang Vieng, Laos, this month. A lack of knowledge about methanol poisoning, from the public as well as the medical communities where outbreaks often occur, exacerbates the problem, according to the organization. Where incidents are the highestMost incidents of methanol poisoning occur in Asia, according to Doctors Without Borders. A website by Doctors Without Borders that monitors methanol poisoning says many foreign tourists have fallen victim to methanol poisoning after consuming incorrectly distilled "arak" in Bali, Lombok and Gili Islands. Scott Bessent, founder and chief executive officer of Key Square Group LP, during an interview in Washington, D.C., June 7, 2024. The U.S. stock market appeared to cheer President-elect Donald Trump's presumptive nominee for Treasury secretary, who told CNBC earlier in November that he sees an era of strong growth and lower inflation ahead. Stock market futures rose and Treasury yields tumbled early Monday following the announcement late Friday that Trump would pick Scott Bessent, a familiar Wall Street figure, to take on his administration's most important economic role. The move sent a message that Trump wants someone with strong market credentials as well as a similar philosophy for the role. In particular, bond yields have scaled higher, with some interpreting the move as anticipating another leg up for inflation while others see it as traders pricing in stronger growth.

New York CNN —Macy’s announced Monday that a single employee was responsible for so many accounting irregularities that the company was forced to delay its quarterly earnings report, which the retailer had planned to release Tuesday. The company recently discovered that the unnamed employee intentionally hid as much as $154 million in expenses over the course of nearly three years, prompting the retailer to conduct an independent forensic accounting investigation. The employee, whom Macy’s said is no longer with the company, “intentionally made erroneous accounting accrual entries” to hide small package delivery expenses. Macy’s did not say why the employee hid the expenses. “At Macy’s, Inc., we promote a culture of ethical conduct,” said Macy’s CEO Tony Spring said in a statement.

Rethinking the 4% rule in retirement
  + stars: | 2024-11-25 | by ( Jeanne Sahadi | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
The most commonly recommended rule of thumb is the so-called 4% rule, which means you spend 4% of your portfolio every year, on an inflation-adjusted basis. When you die, your nest egg could be almost as large if not larger than it was on your first day of retirement. For example, Morningstar ran simulations on a $1 million portfolio over 30 years using the 4% rule. That’s because the rule is based on a very high probability that you never exhaust your nest egg. “It’s not just about getting employees to retirement but (helping them figure out) what to do once they’re in retirement,” Williams said.

CNN —Despite his campaign promises to leave the issue to the states, President-elect Donald Trump’s administration will shape the national landscape around abortion and reproductive health. And his administration may also be forced to choose whether to pursue other changes, such as how the abortion drug mifepristone is regulated. “Back in April, President Trump made clear that he thinks abortion policy should be left to the states,” Kniffin said. If the Trump administration seeks to undo those and other agency measures, it could make those lawsuits moot. He says he won’t sign a federal bill on abortion,” said one prominent anti-abortion activist, who asked for anonymity to speak candidly.

With uncertainty lingering over how President-elect Donald Trump's policy intentions could affect vital parts of the economy, December no longer looks like a done deal for an interest rate cut. Primarily, it was Trump's victory and the extent to which his policies will stimulate the economy and perhaps goose inflation. In a recent CNBC interview, Bessent advocated for a gradual implementation of tariffs and insisted that Trump has no desire to stoke inflation. A market rally Monday lost a little bit of its steam as well as investors continued to weigh the prospects for Fed policy. "It is really, really hard to argue the other side of tariffs will slow growth and raise inflation.

When Donald J. Trump first ran for the White House in 2016, his closing campaign advertisement lamented the influence of Wall Street in Washington, flashing ominous images of big banks and the billionaire liberal philanthropist George Soros. Now, as president-elect, Mr. Trump has tapped two denizens of Wall Street to run his economic agenda. Mr. Trump’s choices to lead his economic team show the prominence of billionaire investors in setting an agenda that is supposed to fuel a “blue-collar boom” but that skeptics think will mostly benefit the rich. As Mr. Trump prepares to assume the presidency in January, business owners and investors are closely attuned to which of his economic promises he will ultimately follow through on. The selections of Mr. Bessent and Mr. Lutnick cement a hold by Wall Street executives over the two most important economic posts in any administration.
