Altman, the 39-year-old venture capitalist and CEO of OpenAI, was speaking with journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin at the New York Times’ Dealbook Summit on Wednesday. “I have faith that researchers will figure out to avoid that,” Altman replied. “I think there’s a set of technical problems that the smartest people in the world are going to work on. We have this incredible piece of science called deep learning that can help us solve these very hard problems.”Ah, yes. And ExxonMobil will solve the climate crisis…Look, it’s hard not to be charmed by Altman, who did not respond to a request for comment.

CNN —Syria’s army said it is withdrawing from Hama, a symbolic and strategically important central city, marking a second major gain for a newly formed rebel coalition that also captured Aleppo last week. Rebels had been unable to capture the city since the Syrian civil war began in 2011. The rebels vowed to advance further south, to the city of Homs, another major city about 165 kilometers (100 miles) from the capital Damascus. Syria’s civil war began during the 2011 Arab Spring as the government suppressed an uprising against Assad, who has been president since 2000. The country plunged into a full-scale civil war as the protests turned into an armed rebellion.

I loved working with children but the job left me feeling stressed and undervalued. I left teaching to go back to school and learn to launch satellites but I didn't feel much happier. At the time, I was a teacher at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex being paid less than $12 an hour. AdvertisementThough I loved children, teaching, and the opportunity to work with famous figures like Al Worden, the Command Module Pilot of Apollo 15, I felt undervalued. A subsidiary of top global consulting firm McKinsey & Company agreed to pay nearly $123 million to settle claims that it bribed government officials in South Africa, the U.S. Department of Justice said Thursday. Federal prosecutors also unsealed a 2022 guilty plea by Vikas Sagar, a former senior partner at McKinsey who worked in the subsidiary's South Africa office. The bribery scheme helped McKinsey and McKinsey Africa net approximately $85 million in profits, according to prosecutors. The deferred prosecution agreement requires McKinsey Africa to accept responsibility for the allegations. "McKinsey welcomes the resolution of these matters and the closure of this regretful situation," McKinsey Africa said in a statement Thursday.

"We believe it is key to remain invested and view any potential corrections as technical and temporary opportunities to get into the market," Julius Baer International's Portfolio Manager Aneka Beneby said. Against this backdrop, she observes a "come back" in the traditional 60/40 portfolio, where 60% of funds are invested in equities and the remaining 40% is allocated to fixed income. Overweight equities Looking ahead, Beneby is overweight on equities and prefers the asset class to fixed income given relatively high inflation levels. Her comments come as the consumer price index — a key metric measuring inflation levels — rose 2.6% in the U.S. in October, versus a year ago. Fixed income Unlike U.S. equity markets which have had a stellar rise, fixed income has been under pressure no thanks to high levels of volatility.

Property prices keep rising as Dubai scrambles to build thousands more villas to meet demand. The influx of wealthy folk is causing a problem, however: there aren't enough houses to meet demand. To meet surging demand, Dubai is scrambling to build more homes. Developers will have to build even more upmarket properties to meet demand. Prices are expected to rise by 8% in 2025, yet luxury property in Dubai is still a relative bargain.

Adam Boehler, the CEO of the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation, addresses the daily coronavirus task force briefing in the Rose Garden at the White House in Washington, U.S., April 14, 2020. CNN —NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to return astronauts to the moon this decade amid a renewed international push for lunar exploration, is facing more delays. The issue relates to how the Orion capsule reenters Earth’s atmosphere upon returning from deep space, said NASA deputy administrator Pam Melroy. Prior to Trump taking office, NASA had targeted 2028 for the first moon landing. But in 2019, then-Vice President Mike Pence made the stunning declaration that the administration would direct NASA to drastically accelerate that timeline, aiming to conduct a crewed moon landing by 2024. Pence in part announced the decision to try to accelerate a US moon landing as part of a space race against China.

Since the early stages of Syria's bloody civil war that began in 2011, Iran has supported Syria's strongman president, Bashar Assad. Advancing in the face of Russian and Syrian airstrikes, they overran Syria's fourth-largest city, Hama, on Thursday. Earlier in the Syrian conflict, Iran helped orchestrate interventions on Assad's side by its powerful Lebanese proxy Hezbollah in 2013, and Russia in 2015. While Iran will undoubtedly remain committed to supporting Assad, it's unlikely to prove capable of organizing a 2016-style counteroffensive to recapture Aleppo.
