Nationwide core inflation in Japan reached 4% in December, the highest annualized print since December 1981, according to data released last week. Yuichi Yamazaki | Afp | Getty ImagesThe Bank of Japan emphasized that it wants to maintain its current monetary policy, including leaving its yield curve control unchanged, according to the Summary of Opinions from its last meeting published Thursday. The "yield curve control" refers to a policy of the Japanese central bank that's designed to keep the 10-year yield on Japanese Government Bonds (JGBs) within 0.5 percentage points of zero. The central bank continued its operations to purchase Japanese government bonds in response to upward pressure on yields. I think a lot will depend on, for instance, the inflation data in the coming months," he told CNBC's "Street Signs Asia."
Retail sales have weakened sharply over the last two months and manufacturing looks to have joined the housing market in recession. While the labor market remains strong, business sentiment continues to sour, which could eventually hurt hiring. According to a Reuters survey of economists, GDP growth likely increased at a 2.6% annualized rate last quarter after accelerating at a 3.2% pace in the third quarter. Trade, which accounted for the bulk of GDP growth in the third quarter, was seen either making a small contribution or subtracting from GDP growth. While the labor market thus far has shown remarkable resilience, economists argue that deteriorating business conditions will force companies to slow hiring and lay off workers.

Some of the artists on display in the MoMA gallery have gone on to create more work centered on supply chains. “When you start to do this research, you see everything differently and the precarity of the supply chain was made so clear to me,” she said.
The NYSE, which is owned by Intercontinental Exchange Inc (ICE.N), said a "system issue" prevented the opening auctions in a subset of its listed securities. The stocks began trading without an opening print, causing erroneous prices that the exchange said will be declared null and void. NYSE ended the day with a normal market close and expected a regular open on Wednesday, Blaugrund added. The NYSE-listed stocks trade on all 16 U.S. stock exchanges, which use the NYSE's prices. After the 9/11 disaster, the NYSE was obligated to maintain a primary trading site (at the NYSE) and a back-up site (which is in Chicago). On Monday evening, routine maintenance was being performed on the software for the Chicago back-up site. On Tuesday morning, the back-up system (Chicago) was mistakenly still running when the primary system (NYSE) came online. Because the back-up was still running, when the primary site started up some stocks behaved as if trading had already started. This caused significant price dislocations and trading halts.
CNN —The US could be approaching a 2011-style debt ceiling market meltdown, but worried investors shouldn’t abandon ship, Wall Street analysts say. That means that if Congress doesn’t raise the debt ceiling by then, the US could default on its debt. But lawmakers remain in a deadlock about whether to lift their self-imposed borrowing limit: Democrats want Congress to pass a debt ceiling increase without conditions but Republican leadership says that any debt limit increase should be accompanied by spending cuts. Wall Street’s response: A debt ceiling meltdown creates serious risk for investors. Even if the debt ceiling debates are resolved, it’s not a bad idea to have some money invested abroad just in case of upheaval.
Inflation is beginning to moderate in developed markets, but potential data surprises remain a risk to investors. Goldman Sachs suggests three areas that investors can watch in order to help predict these inflation surprises. Commodity prices, currency movements, and regional inflation figures are key areas to look for future surprises. But, according to Goldman Sachs, surprises still abound and can shock markets if too much bullishness is priced in. "The significant slowdown in global headline and core inflation that we anticipate in 2023 will likely eventually lower market sensitivity to inflation surprises," Goldman analysts wrote.

The day after a major trading glitch at the New York Stock Exchange open, the NYSE has issued a statement on what happened: "The root cause was determined to be a manual error involving the Exchange's Disaster Recovery configuration at system start of day." Traders noted that both Designated Market Makers (DMMs) and floor brokers appear to have been frozen out of the order book that is used to build the opening print. No opening print was provided in dozens of big-name companies. "It was almost like trading opened without the participation of the floor," one observer who asked to remain anonymous told me. What we know is that dozens of stocks opened at prices well above or below their prior day closing prices.
REUTERS/StaffLONDON, Jan 24 (Reuters) - The euro held near a nine-month high against the dollar on Tuesday, though European stocks eased after regional business activity data reinforced expectations that the European Central Bank (ECB) will raise rates by a further 50 basis points. S&P Global's flash Composite Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) climbed to 50.2 this month from 49.3 in December, the first time it has been above the 50 mark since June. "For the ECB, this should seal the deal for a 50-basis point hike next week," said ING economists in a note. The euro , in contrast was steady at $1.0862, just off its nine-month high of $1.0927 hit a day before.

New York CNN —Rupert Murdoch has abandoned plans to combine Fox Corporation and News Corporation, a move that would have reunited his broadcasting and print publishing companies under one roof. News Corporation is the parent of The Wall Street Journal, New York Post, HarperCollins, and other iconic print publications. Dozens of stocks opened at prices well above or below their prior day closing prices. Every day, stocks open at the NYSE at or near 9:30 a.m. There is only a single opening price, which is determined by thousands of orders to buy and sell individual stocks. A single price is then quoted at the open and all orders are aggregated into a single opening "auction print." Most likely, the "correct" opening price will be the price when the stocks reopened.

I never feel guilty spending gift cards on things I want, which makes them a versatile gift. I also fall in the camp of people who adore and appreciate gift cards, especially for retailers I love. I try to earn rewards whenever I give giftsOne of my favorite ways to earn rewards on my gifting habit is by using shopping portals for cash back and travel rewards. There are hundreds of shopping portals out there, each offering different earning rates for the various retailers in its network. And instead of burning gas money, earn some rewards instead by using a shopping portal.
Several draw in unwitting customers like Talbot through Google ads that outrank the legitimate SAM.gov page, illustrating the ease of buying visibility on the world’s largest search engine. Google removed the ads for a number of these sites in response to an inquiry for this article but subsequently reversed its decision. “We have strict ads policies that govern the types of ads and advertisers we allow on our platforms,” Google spokesperson Davis Thompson said in a statement. But the Small Business Administration urges people not to spend their precious resources on these services when so many free alternatives exist. She expects new, prominently displayed Google ads to play a part in the problem.

The report said the Supreme Court's information security environment was "built fundamentally on trust with limited safeguards to regulate and constrain access to very sensitive information." But it called the court's information security policies "outdated" and recommended that it overhaul its platform for handling case-related documents and remedy "inadequate safeguards" for tracking who prints and copies documents. The Supreme Court's IT systems operate separately from the rest of the federal judiciary. U.S. judiciary officials have said the systems used by federal appellate and district courts also are outdated and need modernization.
The lessors took a hit of almost $10 billion when Russia barred airlines from returning planes hit by Western sanctions to their owners in the West. This has turned the spotlight on other risky markets, most prominently China and Taiwan, where some fear future conflict could cause a similar seizure on a much larger scale. When discussing the Russia losses, most executives speaking at the conference, also touched on China risks. Several executives said the loss of aircraft to Russia would simply feed into risk management models and encourage lessors to be careful about spreading their exposure rather than withdrawing from markets altogether. "Lessors aren't going to be able to abandon higher risk areas because that is what they do," he added.
