US fines Texas oil company Callon Permian over emissions
  + stars: | 2023-07-13 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
July 13 (Reuters) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on Thursday said Callon Permian LLC was fined $1.3 million for excess emissions from tanks, flares and other equipment at company's oil and gas facilities in the West Texas Permian Basin. The EPA said it identified emissions using a helicopter equipped with a special infrared camera that detects hydrocarbon leaks. The company failed to comply with requirements for flares, tanks, and combustors as well as general requirements of the federally approved Texas State Implementation Plan, the EPA said. Callon will perform corrective actions at 13 of its oil and gas facilities in the West Texas Permian Basin, resulting in an estimated reduction of over 1.2 million pounds of volatile organic compound (VOCs) emissions, the agency said. A World Health Organization agency declared on Thursday that aspartame, an artificial sweetener widely used in diet drinks and low-sugar foods, could possibly cause cancer. By some calculations using the panel’s standard, a person weighing 150 pounds could avoid a risk of cancer but still drink about a dozen cans of diet soda a day. agency of a cancer risk associated with aspartame reflects the first time the prominent international body has weighed in publicly on the effects of the nearly ubiquitous artificial sweetener. The International Agency for Research on Cancer, or I.A.R.C., said it based its conclusion that aspartame was a possible carcinogen on limited evidence from three observational studies of humans that the agency said linked consumption of artificially sweetened beverages to an increase in cases of liver cancer — at levels far below a dozen cans a day. It cautioned that the results could potentially be skewed toward the profile of people who drink higher amounts of diet drinks and called for further study.

The World Health Organization declared Thursday that the artificial sweetener aspartame is “possibly carcinogenic to humans,” adding it to the same risk category as breathing in engine exhaust, working in dry-cleaning and consuming certain pickled vegetables. suggests you’d have to chug quite a bit of diet soda to enter the danger zone. Its new guidance for safe consumption is 40 milligrams of aspartame per kilogram of body weight, meaning that a committed diet-cola fan weighing 150 pounds could drink as many as two dozen cans a day. Still, the news may give the jitters (caffeinated or not) to diet-drink die-hards. If you’re ready to swear off the stuff, or at least moderate your habit, here are 11 aspartame-free alternatives to reach for instead.

Final offer: UK's Sunak seeks to end strikes with new pay deals

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak speaks to the media during London Tech Week at the QEII centre on June 12, 2023. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Thursday sought to end months of crippling public sector strikes by offering teachers, doctors and other workers pay increases of 6% and above, but warned it would cost billions that could mean cuts elsewhere. The Conservative leader said he had accepted the recommendations of independent pay review boards on wage rises for millions of public sector workers, stressing that it was a final offer intended to end months of industrial action. Junior doctors will now get a 6% pay uplift and a lump-sum pay increase of 1,250 pounds ($1,633.25), while teachers would get 6.5%. After more than a year of elevated inflation - which at its peak hit more than 11% - the government is struggling to balance the need to end strikes with rising public debt levels.

What is aspartame and what do the new WHO rulings mean?

Discovered in 1965 by American chemist James Schlatter, aspartame is about 200 times sweeter than regular table sugar. One group of experts, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), said aspartame is a "possible carcinogen". For aspartame, this limit is 40 milligrams of aspartame per kilogram of body weight per day. Aspartame's use in food products has been debated for decades and has also prompted some companies to remove the compound from their products. PepsiCo (PEP.O) removed aspartame from Diet Pepsi in 2015 but brought it back a year later.

CNN —Your Chipotle guacamole may soon be prepared by a robot. Meet “Autocado,” a Chipotle robot designed to perform the more tedious tasks of creating the chain’s guacamole, including cutting, coring and peeling avocados. But Chipotle (CMG) said this “collaborative robot” will not eliminate jobs, but, instead, employees will work with the robot to speed up guacamole production. For its design, Chipotle partnered with Vebu Labs, a robotics startup in California, to analyze the preparation process at various Chipotle restaurants and identify the most time-consuming tasks for employees. Economic output fell 0.1% in May from April, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said, after growth of 0.2% in the previous month. All sectors of the economy contracted with the exception of services, which showed no growth. Finance minister Jeremy Hunt said high inflation continued to hamper the economy and he called for patience in bringing it down. Some companies in the arts, entertainment and recreation sector said they had benefited from the extra bank holiday, as well as hotels and restaurants, the ONS said. Britain's economy often shows some rebound in subsequent months when output is temporarily dented by extra bank holidays.

LONDON, July 13 (Reuters) - Britain's largest homebuilder Barratt Developments (BDEV.L) warned it would build far fewer homes this fiscal year as rising mortgage rates and stubborn inflation hit demand, sending its shares down more than 5% in early trading on Thursday. The FTSE 100-listed firm said it expected to build between 13,250 to 14,250 units in the year ending June 30, 2024, down from 17,206 homes the year before. Average two-year fixed mortgage rates hit a 15-year high earlier this week. Julie Palmer, partner at Begbies Traynor, said Thursday's trading update underlined the impact of rising rates on homebuyers, construction firms and other businesses linked to the housing market. High-end housebuilder Berkeley (BKGH.L) last month forecast a 20% drop in house build sales for its current fiscal year.

There were urgent NATO meetings about the war in Ukraine, raging floods from India to Vermont, and a record heat wave across America. But this week the BBC wound up airing wall-to-wall coverage of a different story: itself. The confirmation that Huw Edwards, a prominent BBC anchor, was the unnamed person at the heart of allegations of sexual misconduct ended days of breathless speculation that consumed Britain’s public broadcaster. Yet it left a lingering sense of unease about the role of the British news media — and its even more intrusive cousin, social media — in the unmasking of a public figure. The allegations were salacious, to be sure — catnip for the British press — and the BBC was trying to show journalistic integrity by not shying away from embarrassing news about a member of its own staff.

Consumer goods makers say the price hikes are necessary, and that they have taken a hit to margins over the past two years. Some companies such as Clorox (CLX.N) have even begun to ease off the hikes to protect sales volumes as input costs fall. "In the U.S. in particular, these pressures are more acute than in Europe," Janus Henderson portfolio manager Luke Newman told Reuters. U.S. consumer strength has begun weakening, "and that's bad news for the consumer companies," Barclays analyst Iain Simpson said. Still, cost inflation has chipped away at margins, which have broadly fallen 2-4 percentage points over the past two years for the consumer goods industry.

LONDON, July 12 (Reuters) - One of Britain's leading news anchors, Huw Edwards, was named by his wife on Wednesday as being the BBC presenter facing allegations he paid a young person thousands of pounds for sexually explicit photos, the broadcaster reported. Providence carried Superstruct through the COVID-19 pandemic when concerts and other public events came to a sudden halt, heavily impacting the company’s revenue and earnings. It has since grown by swallowing up festivals across Europe and Australia, and now operates 80 large-scale festivals and 200 smaller events. The rebound in live music and festivals following the end of lockdowns has also encouraged investment in the sector. Private equity owner Silver Lake is advancing towards a sale of Australian live events and ticketing group TEG, which could be worth A$2 billion dollars, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The sale of TEG could serve as a yardstick for putting a price on Superstruct, as well as gauging buyer interest, one of them added.

Phillip alleged Barclays owed her a duty to ignore her instructions if the bank had reasonable grounds to suspect she was being defrauded. "Where the customer has authorised and instructed the bank to make a payment, the bank must carry out the instruction promptly," he said. "It is not for the bank to concern itself with the wisdom or risks of its customer's payment decisions." James Levy, a partner at law firm Ashurst, said the onus was on customers to ensure payment instructions were bona fide. The Supreme Court, however, allowed Philipp to pursue an alternative case against Barclays on the grounds that the bank breached its duty by failing to take adequate steps to recover the money transferred to the UAE.

The accusers have said the 63-year-old had aggressively groped them or in one case performed oral sex while the complainant was passed out, with the prosecution describing him as a sexual bully. Spacey likewise said he could not remember the second accuser, an aspiring actor, who says he woke in the actor's London apartment to find he was being assaulted. Former BoE policymaker Kate Barker told the Financial Times this weekend that targetted and temporary tax rises on top earners may be the most effective and fairest way to go. "We're asking monetary policy to do all the work," she said. But the political sensitivity of income tax likely dictates the way forward, however cogent the economics. Yet the more general point of fiscal policy helping with the final throes of the inflation battle continues to be made. "Fiscal Policy should remain aligned with monetary policy in the fight against inflation," the Fund concluded.
