You can now get a Tesla Model Y for cheaper than the average car. Tesla's price war is spilling over out of the electric vehicle market as Elon Musk's car company continues to slash prices. Add on the $7,500 EV tax credit, and you can now purchase a Model Y for around $42,500. To make things even worse for competitors, all Model 3 and Model Y vehicles now qualify for the full tax credit, too. As a strategy for boosting demand, Tesla's price cuts appeared to be working in the first quarter, reporting a 36% increase in deliveries during that period.

Around the same time, she was told she could not make discretionary promotions even at the lower levels of the department without getting clearance from the Adams administration, said Kenneth Corey, the former chief of the department, who worked under Ms. Sewell until he retired in November. “She was gradually being stripped of power,” he said. “They wonder what’s next,” he said. Ms. Sewell has not provided a reason for her decision to leave the job, which paid about $243,000 a year. On Tuesday afternoon, her office released a statement in which she thanked Mr. Adams — whom she had not mentioned in the internal email announcing her resignation — for the opportunity to lead the department.

Keechant Sewell, commissioner of the New York Police Department, said Monday she would resign after less than 18 months, giving no reason for the abrupt end to a tenure during which she won over many in the rank and file even as she jockeyed for position against other appointees and top officers. Ms. Sewell, who was appointed to her position by Mayor Eric Adams and started in 2022, was the first woman to head the nation’s largest police force. He had promised as a candidate to name a woman to lead the public safety agency where he was an officer for 22 years, giving her the power to rethink policing after bitter protests against police brutality and racism. The mayor said in a statement on Monday that Ms. Sewell had worked tirelessly and that “New Yorkers owe her a debt of gratitude.” But Ms. Sewell, in an email to the department announcing her resignation, did not mention the mayor at all. She did not say when she would be leaving, and the mayor did not say when a replacement would be chosen.

Y Combinator co-founder Paul Graham said remote work "fooled" leaders at the start of the pandemic. Major firms including Amazon, Meta, and Apple have ordered workers back to the office recently. Partly I think because remote work does work initially, if you start with a system already healthy from in-person work ... And partly because it seemed to solve recruiting, which is always a bottleneck." Graham's comments come as a number of major companies reverse their flexible working policies including Amazon, Apple, and Goldman Sachs. Graham joins a list of influential figures who are taking a stand against remote work including Elon Musk who has famously waged a war against the practice calling it "morally wrong."

BEIJING, June 12 (Reuters) - China deployed a reconnaissance aircraft over Pacific waters east of Taiwan last week that Chinese media said monitored and gathered intelligence on an exercise involving the navies of the United States, Japan, France and Canada. The islands separate the East China Sea from the Philippine Sea, and dot the West Pacific between Japan and Taiwan, which China claims as its territory. The Japanese defence ministry reported a sighting of a Y-9 reconnaissance variant in the Pacific on Thursday. A spokesperson for the Japanese ministry said on Monday it was analysing a piece of equipment attached to the undercarriage of the Y-9 variant that had not been seen before. Days before the quadrilateral exercise, the coast guards of the Philippines, United States and Japan held their first trilateral exercise off the coast of a western Philippine province.

The bank hiked its price target to $154 from $139, which implies 24.7% upside from where shares closed on Friday. "We were encouraged by CEO commentary that retail margins could improve beyond pre-pandemic levels (4-5% in US)," wrote analyst Justin Post. "In 1Q, Amazon US retail margins were up 340bps y/y, one of the best quarters in the company's history for y/y margin improvement," Post added. Post thinks that, based on margin improvement year-to-date, metrics showing strong leverage and management's commentary, Amazon's 2024 U.S. retail margins could reach a range of 4% to 5%. The analyst noted that a 22% year-over-year decline in U.S. retail gasoline prices should aid retail margin improvement.

A small handful of experts claim to have evidence that our satellite produces forces that can trigger earthquakes. The moon's effect on earthquakes was hiddenScientists have long pondered whether the moon's tides could be linked to earthquakes. And it seems that in some cases, the moon did help trigger earthquakes around the world. By digging into these datasets, a few studies have suggested a link between Earth tides and earthquakes. Rather, it is when the rock is on the very brink of collapse that the moon's small tug could push it past that final tipping point.

After a grueling year marked by Democratic infighting, New York State lawmakers are expected to conclude the 2023 legislative session this weekend with few marquee policy wins and a notable failure to address the state’s critical housing needs. Despite last-ditch efforts, Democrats in control of the State Capitol failed to introduce or pass legislation to tackle the state’s affordable housing crisis, perhaps the most pressing issue on their policy agenda, leading to a public round of backbiting between lawmakers and Gov. Even so, Democrats were claiming victories on other fronts, weary as they were from drawn-out state budget negotiations that shortened their time to legislate. Lawmakers are expected to pass a long-stalled initiative to seal old criminal records to help people convicted of certain crimes re-enter society. They also passed a bill to create a commission to study reparations for Black people, making New York the second state after California to undertake such an initiative, and were pushing to expand health care services for undocumented immigrants.

On Tuesday afternoon, the governor’s office issued a news release announcing that the wildfires were creating hazy conditions in New York City and elsewhere, urging residents to limit exposure and saying state experts were monitoring the situation. On Wednesday morning, as many New Yorkers woke up to a thick blanket of haze, the governor spoke to reporters in Albany about the situation, saying it was “an emergency crisis” and warning it could last several days. Asked about the wisdom of declaring a state of emergency, Ms. Hochul said that it was unnecessary. “A state of emergency is a mechanism you use when there’s something you can do about it,” she said. “We don’t have a lot we can do about the circumstances for contaminated toxic air coming into our airspace, so there’s not a need for deploying resources or bringing money to the table.”

Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., asked a federal court Friday morning to reverse a judge's order to reveal the identities of the people who guaranteed the $500,000 bond in his criminal fraud case. An attorney for Santos, the scandal-plagued freshman congressman who is charged with multiple financial crimes, argued that the backers' identities should remain private because of concerns that they will be attacked and harassed as a result of the "media frenzy" surrounding the case. But Murray said that "countervailing factors" support keeping the bail backers' identities under wraps. He said that Santos, his staff and others have been subjected to "hateful attacks" through the case. He added that if the other two backers' identities are released, they are likely to decide "that they shall have to withdraw from, serving as suretors."
