Those talks continued over the past week with Tesla discussing minute details of its plans to gain access to India's fast-growing EV market, and Modi personally tracking developments, sources say. Months after seeking clearance for its own $1 billion investment in India, BYD is no longer keen to pursue the approval, Reuters reported. India has told Tesla it will allow its Chinese suppliers into the country if they forge partnerships with local firms, just like Apple did. Tesla does not currently sell vehicles in India. But Chinese suppliers could be critical if Tesla were to establish a plant in India and keep costs in check for a cheap EV. Instead, the Indian officials said they had suggested a workaround in which Tesla would emulate the approach of Apple (AAPL.O). The U.S. smartphone giant in recent months has obtained approvals to bring Chinese suppliers to India after they found local joint-venture partners. New Delhi in recent months has been approving some Chinese suppliers' JV partnerships with Indian companies on a case-to-case basis, one of the government sources said. One of the Indian officials said pairing local and Chinese players could work for Tesla.

BYD executives told Megha Engineering last week that the battery and EV maker wanted to drop pursuit of the investment, according to the two people with knowledge of that exchange. BYD, China's largest EV maker, declined to comment on the status of its investment proposal and whether it would pull the plan to produce electric cars in India. Megha Engineering did not respond to request to comment. A final decision on whether to approve BYD's investment proposal would be taken by Indian ministries of trade and heavy industries. In 2013 it started building electric buses in India with Megha Engineering, under a joint venture company called Olectra Greentech (OLEC.NS).

BENGALURU, July 21 (Reuters) - Shares of Infosys (INFY.NS), India's second-largest software exporter, fell as much as 9% on Friday, after the company halved its full-year revenue growth outlook and posted a weaker-than-expected first-quarter profit. The company cut its revenue guidance to 1%-3.5% on a constant currency basis from the previous 4%-7%. Infosys Chief Executive Salil Parekh attributed the guidance cut to delays in decision-making by clients. BENGALURU, July 20 (Reuters) - Infosys (INFY.NS), India's second-largest IT services firm by revenue, halved its full-year revenue forecast on Thursday and posted a first-quarter profit that missed estimates as clients cut back spending in a cloudy economic environment. Infosys' U.S.-listed shares fell nearly 7% in pre-market trading after the company cut its full-year revenue growth of 1%-3.5% on a constant currency basis from 4%-7% previously. There are some discretionary spending cuts from clients in the short-term and overall decision-making has slowed down, CEO Salil Parekh said in a media conference. Consolidated net profit rose 10.9% to 59.45 billion rupees ($725.5 million) in the three months to June 30, missing analysts' view of 61.41 billion rupees as per Refinitiv IBES. Businesses are cutting back spending on discretionary IT projects amid steep inflation that stoked interest rates.

Britain upgrades to also-ran in EV battery race

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is joining the global arms race to secure future industries, but he has a long way to go. Europe may have 25 so-called gigafactories, vast plants that turn raw materials such as lithium into battery packs, by 2025. While both Theresa May and Boris Johnson tried, they failed to win over big global players like Tesla (TSLA.O), Samsung or Northvolt, which preferred European sites. The UK leader can at least now claim he can attract global players. But Tata’s 40 GWh of new capacity brings Britain’s total to just over 50 GWh by 2026, after factoring in the plant operated by China’s Envision in Sunderland.

July 19 (Reuters) - Enterprise software provider IBM's (IBM.N) second-quarter revenue fell short of Wall Street expectations on Wednesday, bogged down by tepid spending from businesses. Revenue growth in the U.S. and Western Europe was "muted" as the company wrapped up the cycle for its mainframe computers it launched last year, Chief Financial Officer James Kavanaugh said in an interview. Total revenue for the quarter ended June 30 fell 0.4% to $15.48 billion compared with analysts' average estimate of $15.58 billion, according to Refinitiv data. Analysts expect watsonx to aid the software business, which grew 7.2% to $6.6 billion during the reported quarter, thanks to enterprise digitization projects. Net income rose to $1.58 billion, or $1.72 per share, compared with $1.39 billion, or $1.53 per share, a year earlier.

Anindito Mukherjee | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesThe Tata Group will develop a major facility for the production of electric car batteries in the U.K., with the Indian conglomerate set to invest more than £4 billion (around $5.17 billion) in the project. "This investment will be crucial to boosting the UK's battery manufacturing capacity needed to support the electric vehicle industry in the long term," the government said. "With an initial output of 40GWh it will also provide almost half of the battery production that the Faraday Institution estimates the UK will need by 2030," it added. So-called gigafactories are facilities that produce batteries for electric vehicles on a large scale. It's been widely reported that the U.K. will provide Tata with significant subsidies for the project.

Tata, the India-based conglomerate, announced on Wednesday that it would build a 4 billion pound ($5.2 billion) battery plant in western England, a commitment sought by the auto industry and lawmakers hoping to stem fears of an exodus of car manufacturers from Britain. Tata owns Jaguar Land Rover, the Britain-based automaker, and the company’s factories in Britain would be important customers for the batteries. The government said the plant, which would create 4,000 jobs, could eventually produce almost half of the electric-car batteries needed by Britain by 2030. The announcement was made possible by a large package of subsidies offered by the government of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Until now, Britain’s only other battery facility was one linked to the country’s largest car plant, operated by Nissan in northeast England.

The new plant is expected to be built in Somerset, south-west England, while Jaguar Land Rover's UK factories are based near Birmingham, central England. With an initial output of 40 gigawatt hours, Britain said the factory would provide almost half of the battery production needed by 2030. The Faraday Institution has projected UK battery demand to reach over 100 GWh a year by that time. "With this strategic investment, the Tata Group further strengthens its commitment to the UK," Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran said in the statement. "Almost every car producing nation in the world (is) offering a lot of incentives in order to ensure that they preserve the integrity of their car industry," he said.

BENGALURU, July 12 (Reuters) - Indian IT services provider Wipro Ltd (WIPR.NS) said on Wednesday it planned to invest $1 billion into artificial intelligence (AI) over the next three years. Apple has long depended on China for manufacturing, but the relationship is getting complex. Two recent developments suggest India's push to become a viable alternative to China — and benefit Apple — are mixed. "Foxconn has determined it will not move forward on the joint venture with Vedanta," Foxconn said in a statement to Reuters. That's a critical blow to Modi, who set out chip manufacturing as a strategic part of his ambitions to level up India.
