A Hollywood assistant role has long been a launching point for a career in entertainment. But "there is no blueprint" for how to get such a job, said Cathy Campo, a creative assistant at Netflix. Campo launched The Hollywood Assistant, a monthly newsletter aimed at industry hopefuls, to change that. In February, Campo launched The Hollywood Assistant, a free newsletter that recently released its sixth edition. It's difficult to make ends meet on those salaries in the costly cities where the entertainment industry is most heavily concentrated: Los Angeles and New York.

They are fighting more effectively at night than their Russian counterparts, U.S. officials say. They are using American-made Bradley fighting vehicles to destroy Russian armor with anti-tank missiles. And they are deploying combined arms tactics — synchronized attacks by infantry, armor and artillery forces — that they learned from American and other Western troops. It is, finally, showtime for the 36,000 Ukrainian soldiers — nine brigades — that have been armed, equipped and trained outside of Ukraine over the past several months by the United States and its NATO allies. How these Western-trained troops perform over the next few months, military experts say, will help determine the success of Ukraine’s long-awaited counteroffensive to push Russian forces out of occupied territory.

John Corbett Knows What You Want From Him

There were such strong associations between Corbett and the role that he struggled to be seen in any other way. His work on “Sex and the City” and in the “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” movies, the first of which was released in 2002, affirmed and limited his type: the nice boyfriend. “He is a very fun rapscallion who likes to have a good time,” said Nia Vardalos, the writer and star of the “Greek Wedding” films, which seemed to refer equally to actor and role. “I’m still living the same life.”In “Sex and the City,” that life, for all of Corbett’s warmth, had its darkness. Jackson said he and Courtney Kemp pitched the show to HBO, Showtime, Paramount, and Hulu — but they all passed. Rudy Giuliani asked a judge to toss parts of the sex-abuse lawsuit against him. Giuliani also denied selling pardons for Trump and making discriminatory remarks. Those claims, Giuliani said, are either false or don't bolster Dunphy's underlying claims that he sexually assaulted her. According to Dunphy's lawsuit, Giuliani behaved the same way in his apartment with her and then forced her to give him oral sex. Noelle Dunphy's lawsuit includes allegations of sexual abuse, using Rudy Giuliani's presence in the "Borat" sequel as a reference point.

Eight days ago, 128 men began competing in singles at the French Open. Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic moved one step closer on Sunday to a potential semifinal showdown. First, Djokovic took apart Juan Pablo Varillas, a 27-year-old Peruvian who has spent the last decade beating the back bushes of the sport. He had never won a match in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament before this year’s French Open and enjoyed a storybook ride through the first week. Djokovic ended all that in 1 hour, 57 minutes, expending what energy he needed in the 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 win and not an ounce more.

Guralnik is the star of the Showtime documentary series "Couples Therapy," in which she analyzes real patients in a room with hidden cameras. While financial issues can spark intense conflict for couples, Guralnik doesn't believe money, or the lack of it, is the real reason they split up. "If you're refusing to look at your bank account when you're pulling out your credit card, you can accrue debt," Guralnik said. People are "shielding themselves from knowing reality" when they refuse to pay attention to their finances, Guralnik said. Two people in a relationship can have vastly different attitudes about money, Guralnik said.

It’s Netflix’s world, rivals just stream in it
  + stars: | 2023-05-24 | by ( Jennifer Saba | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +9 min
Cheaper streaming options with unique programming were luring viewers, leaving Netflix in a tough spot as it raised prices. Paramount+, started in 2021, is joining forces with sister Showtime to widen its offerings. Disney, Paramount and WBD also operate cable and broadcast networks, and don’t specify what portion of the expense is allocated to streaming. Its subscribers, worth $136 a year in revenue apiece, are also more valuable than those of its rivals. Warner Bros Discovery on May 23 rebranded its streaming service as Max, which will include HBO programming along with Discovery’s reality TV shows.
Netflix password-sharing crackdown rolls out in the U.S.

The streaming service said it began alerting members on Tuesday about its new sharing policy, noting that Netflix accounts are only to be shared within a single household. Netflix 's crackdown on password sharing has come to the U.S.Netflix warned it would be tightening its guidelines on password sharing in a push to boost revenue and subscriber numbers, soon after the company began seeing growth stagnate. On Netflix's subscription plans page , it notes that extra members can be added to its standard and premium plans without ads. Earlier this year, Netflix outlined password-sharing guidance in four other countries: New Zealand, Canada, Portugal and Spain. In addition to its crackdown on password sharing, Netflix also recently introduced a cheaper, ad-supported tier in an effort to boost revenue.

Opinion | Can the Writers’ Strike Fix Hollywood?
  + stars: | 2023-05-20 | by ( Ross Douthat | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
A somewhat more pessimistic analysis, offered by writers like Sonny Bunch and Jessa Crispin, emphasizes that the superhero-sweatshop corporate strategy evolved because it’s giving audiences what they want. And so even if the strike is an opportunity for reconsiderations, it’s probably not a lever that can change the system as a whole. Personally I would like to see the strike lever a different Hollywood system into being. (HBO’s “Westworld,” for instance, or lately Showtime’s “Yellowjackets.”) Sometimes they play like thin imitations of the previous decade’s antihero dramas. Or they take on the character of the theatrical experience but somewhat worse — with too-big-to-fail franchises that nobody really enjoys.
(AP Photo/Universal Pictures) Photo Credit: Universal Pictures/Tippett StudioAfter spending years amassing streaming subscribers at great cost, media companies now need to make some profits. Look no further for proof of that than the most recent annual Upfronts, the events where media companies like Fox Corp ., Warner Bros. During Disney's earnings call earlier this month, CEO Bob Iger put new emphasis on ad-supported streaming. 'We need ads'There's been an uptick of consumers signing up for ad-supported streaming subscriptions. But media companies are struggling with the question of whether ad-tier subscriptions make up for other losses.

How MTV Broke News for a Generation
  + stars: | 2023-05-11 | by ( Remy Tumin | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
A little over a year into his first term, President Bill Clinton made good on a promise to return to MTV if young voters sent him to the White House. The town hall-style program in 1994 was meant to focus on violence in America, but it was a question of personal preference that made headlines and helped put MTV News on the media map. Now, a generation after MTV News bridged the gap between news and pop culture, Paramount, the network’s parent company, announced this week that it was shuttering the news service. They brought viewers on the presidential campaign trail and face to face with world leaders like Yasir Arafat, and took them into college dorms in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. They also embraced the messy chaos of 1990s and early 2000s celebrity, as when Courtney Love interrupted an interview with Madonna.
New York CNN —Television and film studios, already dealing with a strike by the Writers Guild of America, started contract negotiations Wednesday with the Directors Guild of America. If those talks break down, they could lead to even broader work stoppages on film and television sets nationwide. Writers Guild of America members and supporters picket outside Sunset Bronson Studios and Netflix Studios, after union negotiators called a strike for film and television writers, in Los Angeles, California, U.S., May 3, 2023. There’s a good chance the Writers Guild could still be on strike at that point. Late night television shows were the first to be halted by the writers strike, and some other popular shows now in production, including Stranger Things, have been postponed as well.
Paramount Global announced Tuesday it is shutting down MTV News and cutting 25% of its staff. It gained popularity for covering news in music, entertainment, and eventually politics. After decades of reporting on entertainment news and a history of iconic interviews with A-listers in the music industry, MTV News is shutting down. Paramount Global announced the shutdown on Tuesday, along with the news that it's cutting 25% of its staff, NPR reported. Its subsidiaries include CBS, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, and Showtime, the latter of which merged with MTV Entertainment Studios in February.
Orna Guralnik Source: ShowtimeNot long after I began working as a personal finance reporter at CNBC in 2018, I started psychoanalysis. When I first saw Guralnik's documentary series "Couples Therapy" on Showtime, in which she provides therapy to real patients in a room with hidden cameras, I couldn't look away. I wanted to ask her about relationships and money, and got the chance to do so at the end of April, just when the new episodes of Season three of "Couples Therapy" premiered. More than 11,000 film and television writers, who say their compensation doesn't match the revenue generated in the streaming era, are on strike for the first time since 2008. Since then, a number of notable films and shows have halted or wrapped production early, including Netflix's "Stanger Things," Disney and Marvel's "Blade," AppleTV+'s "Severance" and Paramount's "Evil." Beyond the delayed production, and likely delayed releases, of these titles, industry experts worry the work pause could have a financial toll greater than that of the previous writers' strike. A number of productions with finished scripts, like Amazon's "The Rings of Power," have decided to continue filming without writers or showrunners on set. "While we're excited to start production with our amazing cast and crew, it is not possible during this strike.
