(Ms. Whitmer, a co-chair of the Harris campaign who is also often mentioned as a vice-presidential contender, has said she has no plans to leave her current job.) Mr. Vance will hold rallies on Tuesday in Henderson and Reno in Nevada, and on Wednesday in Glendale, Ariz. Thus far, Mr. Vance, who has had a rocky start, has mostly appeared on familiar Midwestern ground, including in his Ohio hometown, Middletown. Ms. Harris and Donald J. Trump are also on the road this week. Mr. Trump has said he intends to hold another rally in Butler, where the attempt on his life took place, but has not said when.

Roy Cooper has taken himself out of consideration to be Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, according to two sources familiar with the discussions, in a sign that the accelerated search has entered a new phase. She intends to have private conversations with top contenders, sources said, but it was unclear whether those discussions have started. Cooper, whose friendship with Harris dates back to their time serving as the attorneys general of their respective states, was also the oldest candidate under consideration. Polling and extensive research is underway for other top contenders, sources said, including Pennsylvania Gov. The party has said its goal is to nominate its presidential and vice presidential candidates by August 7.

Gilbert Carrasquillo/GC ImagesThe Pennsylvania governor, who is Jewish, has attracted more scrutiny on this issue than other potential running mates. That's despite Shapiro being largely in line with other Democrats when it comes to the baseline policy of US support for Israel. Shapiro has also called Benjamin Netanyahu a "terrible leader," telling NBC News that the Israeli Prime Minister has "driven Israel to an extreme that has been bad for Israel and bad for the stability in the Middle East." At the time, pro-Palestinian protests had swept college campuses across the country, occasionally resulting in chaos and disruption. Both of these lawmakers have two things in common: they are among those being considered to be Vice President Harris' running mate and can help raise a boatload of money for her heading into November. Trump is raising big moneyDespite Harris' momentum, Trump is still raising a lot of money. The Harris campaign figures cannot be independently verified either, until Aug. 20, when her campaign disclose its financials. "Vice President Harris has directed her team to begin the process of vetting potential running mates," the Harris campaign said in response to a request for comment. When President Biden introduced Kamala Harris as his running mate four years ago, he shared their origin story: He had first learned of her, he said, through his son Beau, who served with her as a state attorney general. “I know how much Beau respected Kamala and her work,” Mr. Biden said of his son, who died in 2015 and was Delaware’s attorney general when Ms. Harris held the same job in California. “That mattered a lot to me, to be honest with you, as I made this decision.”Now it is Vice President Harris who is deciding on a running mate. Of the five or six vice-presidential options currently seen as the most serious contenders, two of them — Governors Roy Cooper of North Carolina and Andy Beshear of Kentucky — directly overlapped with Ms. Harris as attorneys general. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania came into the job as she was leaving her post, and as Mr. Trump entered the White House.

Harris opens up new potential paths to victorySince entering the race, Harris has shown momentum in early polling. This became worrisome for the Biden campaign as warning signs flashed in states like Virginia and New Hampshire. The positive early polling is a great sign for the vice president, but it isn't the only metric that shows momentum. Trump's pick for vice president makes things interestingVice presidential picks are far from guaranteed to help a presidential hopeful win a state. With Biden out of the race, Democrats will likely seek to tie the election — anchored by Harris' candidacy — to the party's future.

Read previewVice President Kamala Harris' campaign is in the process of choosing her running mate, and who she chooses will provide insight into her battle plan for November. With 20 electoral votes, winning the battleground state will likely be a crucial part of both former President Donald Trump and Harris' campaign. Choosing Shapiro, the state's governor, who has proven he can win in Pennsylvania, could significantly bolster Harris' ticket there, Gift said. Kevin Fahey, an assistant professor of political science at the University of Nottingham, agrees but told BI that a Shapiro pick may indicate some trepidation in Harris' campaign. Plus, he's already been an attack dog against Trump's running mate, Sen. JD Vance, going after him for his Appalachian credentials.

Vice President Kamala Harris, now the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, has a long history as a climate-minded politician. During her time as vice president, she helped broker the largest climate deal in U.S. history, the $370 billion Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. Now, the choice of running mate could help bolster her climate and energy agenda, or moderate her stance for voters in swing states. Josh Shapiro, Governor of PennsylvaniaOn Monday, Gov. Over three chaotic weeks, America lived through an assassination attempt, a political convention and a dramatic exit from the presidential ticket. But even — or perhaps especially — in these wild times, the political world is clinging to what it knows: lists of names and wild speculation. Although Vice President Kamala Harris has officially been a presidential candidate for less than four days, the parlor game over her running mate is well underway. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, speaking at a Monday event hosted by an asphalt manufacturer outside Pittsburgh. 2 Spot” (news article, July 23):Vice President Kamala Harris, assuming she is the Democratic presidential nominee, has several good options for completing her ticket. But I urge Ms. Harris and her advisers to cast a wider net initially. Nothing in the Constitution would prevent Barack Obama from serving as vice president; indeed, the Republicans considered a similar move with former President Gerald Ford in 1980. Mark Milley, a retired general and former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is a war hero and a true patriot. Doing so would knock the Trump campaign off balance and, most important, inject a rare note of bipartisanship into our poisoned polity.

Walter Shapiro, a canny, penetrating and often contrarian political columnist whose career included stints as a presidential speechwriter, stand-up comic, professor, author and, as a college student, congressional candidate, died on Sunday in Manhattan. The cause of his death, in a hospital, was an infection related to his recent treatment for cancer, his wife, the journalist and author Meryl Gordon, said. The next year, at 16, he took his first airplane flight to attend President John F. Kennedy’s funeral. He began his career in journalism at Congressional Quarterly and went on to write for Washington Monthly, The Washington Post, Newsweek, Time, USA Today, The New Republic and Esquire. He later wrote for Salon, Yahoo News, Politics Daily and Roll Call.

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris hits the campaign trail on Tuesday for the first time since President Joe Biden announced that he would end his reelection campaign and endorsed Harris for president. Still, some key Democratic endorsements have not yet come through for Harris, such as from House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, both of New York. Former President Barack Obama, one of the parry's most revered figures, has likewise not publicly endorsed Harris yet. Speculation swirls about potential running mates for Harris, with Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, Pennsylvania Gov. While Harris campaigns in Wisconsin, Biden is expected to host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington.

While Kamala Harris could easily make a surprise pick, I’m assuming the accuracy of reports that the short list consists of Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania and Gov. At first glance, Kelly or Shapiro might seem to help more by joining the ticket. While Harris is now comfortably ahead in Minnesota, she’s behind or dead even in Arizona and Pennsylvania polls. And by not putting Shapiro on the ticket, Harris avoids splits in the party over the war in Gaza.

CNN —Kamala Harris has spent much more of her life as a prosecutor than as a senator or vice president – and that is exactly how she is now going to run against Donald Trump. The vice president had expected that to be part of her role making the case for Biden. “As a former prosecutor, Vice President Harris has a lot of experience holding convicted felons accountable,” said Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a former primary opponent in the 2020 Democratic race who quickly endorsed Harris after the news of Biden’s decision broke. “The prosecutor approach is really about just deconstructing an issue,” Harris told CNN in an exclusive interview after a campaign stop in Las Vegas in April. As of late Monday, there did not appear to be any potentially serious challengers for the Democratic nomination who had not already endorsed Harris. On the contrary, Democratic governors and senators and House members have been lining up to endorse Harris, instead of waiting to see whether any potential alternatives emerge. The refusal by Democrats to entertain these calls from donors who want to slow down the nomination process is a sharp contrast to how many donors successfully lobbied lawmakers to call on Biden to drop out of the race. Despite a few big donors pushing for a pause on the process, the Democratic party on Monday was full steam ahead with its new frontrunner. Gretchen Whitmer — all of whom are now contenders in the veepstakes to become Harris' running mate.

Democratic congressional leaders had remained quiet so far — but there were signs that could soon change. Massachusetts Rep. Katherine Clark and California Rep.
