Investors swiftly penalized Trump’s social media business following the former president’s widely panned debate performance. Trump Media initially spiked 10% that day, before fizzling and ending in the red. Trump Media has at times become a way for traders to bet on the political fortunes of Trump and the chances he returns to the White House. Trump is not only the dominant shareholder in Trump Media, he is the most popular user on Truth Social, the company’s only significant product. The lock-up restrictions preventing Trump from selling his 114.75 million shares in Trump Media are set to expire later this month.

Here are six things to watch for on Tuesday night:Will Harris deliver the policy message voters say they want to hear? More than her convention speech, the debate will provide a platform for Harris to answer some of those questions. This image shared by ABC News shows the stage in Philadelphia ahead of the debate between Harris and Trump. Rebecca Wright/CNNWhen Harris sticks by Biden’s policies, Trump attacks them and her as a failure. What’s not up for debate is that Biden, though absent in person, figures to be a prominent figure on the debate stage.

CNN —Kamala Harris’ joyful campaign will Tuesday be hit by the blunt force of reality — a debate with Donald Trump — the most menacing political foe of modern times. The vice president transformed the 2024 election after President Joe Biden’s abject debate showing against Trump on CNN in June led him to end his reelection bid. Haris will be ‘fully prepared’But to succeed in the debate, the vice president faces three difficult tasks. The conceit, however, allowed the Trump campaign to argue she’d return to her original stance if she won power. “I believe the vice president will be fully prepared to do that.”

It was a stunning denouement for the self-proclaimed appointed son of God, a Filipino evangelist preacher who had millions of followers and influence at the highest levels of government but was wanted by Philippine authorities and the FBI on charges of human trafficking and sexual abuse. That changed in March, when a Philippine court ordered the arrest of Quiboloy and several other people on suspicion of child and sexual abuse and human trafficking. After he surrendered, officials said, Quiboloy was flown by military transport to Manila, the capital, and placed in police detention. After he won the presidency in 2022, Marcos set about dismantling Duterte’s power alliances, including the one with Quiboloy. Marcos said that he did not understand Duterte’s apology but that it was “her prerogative” to make it, local media reported.

Since Harris replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee, Trump has constantly attempted to portray her as weak on immigration and crime. On Friday, Harris also chose not to mention mass deportation during a radio interview with Univision, when the host asked her to summarize her argument to undecided Hispanic voters. “There is a way in which those [crime and immigration] issues in particular are also about bigger things,” said Adrianne Shropshire, executive director of BlackPAC, a group working to mobilize Black voters for Harris and Democrats. And many of those voters might recoil from these Trump policies on crime and immigration if they heard more about them. “What he is hoping is that the Black voters who he is [courting] don’t see that stuff,” Shropshire said.

Despite a 7% rebound on Monday, Trump Media has lost nearlythree-quarters (72%) of its value since peaking at $66.22 on March 27. The wipeout reinforces concerns raised by experts who have repeatedly warned that Trump Media’s multi-billion-dollar price tag defies logic. The company is losing money, generating very little revenue and Truth Social remains a relatively tiny player in social media. In August, Trump Media launched Truth+, a TV streaming platform on iOS, Android and the Web versions of Truth Social. It’s possible Trump Media’s stock market fortunes could turn, especially with the former president’s high-profile debate Tuesday with Harris.

Washington CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris has met more than 150 world leaders since becoming vice president. Still, Harris has not always been the first phone call for foreign leaders or officials looking to get a line into the White House. UkraineA month after Russia invaded Ukraine, Harris was dispatched to NATO’s eastern flank on a reassurance mission – one that also came with some sensitive diplomatic smoothing-over. For a foreign policy novice with aspirations for higher office, the war in Ukraine was a rigorous introduction to wartime diplomacy. She has vowed to continue to support Ukraine and impose costs on Russia,” an aide to the vice president said.

And Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has poured cold water on US hopefulness, though Biden officials have largely refrained from criticizing him. “In my view, the less that’s said about particular issues, the better,” a senior administration official told reporters Wednesday in response to Netanyahu’s press conference. Days later, a senior administration official who briefed reporters argued that the majority of the details of a ceasefire deal – “90%” – had been agreed to by the two parties. In a detail not previously shared, the senior official said that of the 18 paragraphs in the agreement, 14 were finished and agreed to. They need to rest and refit, in case a war in the north [with Hezbollah] is going to happen,” the second senior administration official said.

US Steel and Nippon Steel both indicated in statements that they’re open to legal fights to get the deal approved, no matter what actions is announced by Biden. Shares of US Steel (X) closed down 17.5% on the news at $29.37, well below the $55 a share that Nippon Steel agreed to pay for the stock back in December when the deal was announced. US Steel said the future of this and other union-represented plants at the company are at risk unless it gets approval to be purchased by Nippon Steel. US Steel says it has more than 3,000 employees in the state in its remaining steel mills along the Monongahela River just outside of Pittsburgh. The union says it doesn’t believe in the promises made by Nippon Steel so far and that it remains opposed to the purchase.

The addition of Gabbard is particularly notable given the tense exchanges she had with the vice president during their 2020 race that left Harris rattled. Trump’s team has been sketching out potential responses on reproductive rights with the expectation Harris will make that a focus during the debate. The Trump campaign has insisted the matter is settled. Thus far, no one is expected to sit in for Harris, just as no one played Biden ahead of the June debate. It’s the second time the vice president will visit the city this week after campaigning with Biden on Labor Day.

Harris called for ending taxes on tips while rolling out a series of populist economic proposals last week, echoing a policy Trump already supported. The vice president pointed to Trump’s opposition to a bipartisan border security and immigration bill, which turned Republicans against the measure. One image, however, has captured what the moment could mean for young girls. Amara Ajagu watches as Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, speaks on the fourth day of the Democratic National Convention at the United Center in Chicago, on Thursday, August 22, 2024. More so than most little girls, Ajagu can say that Harris could be the first president who looks like her. Harris’ potential to be the first has been an undercurrent of her presidential runs since her first campaign in 2020. Prior to the vice president’s speech, Amara and her younger sister, Leela, led the crowd in a lesson on how to pronounce their great-aunt’s first name: “Comma,” like the punctuation mark, then “La,” like the sing-song “la, la, la.”

Still, the Trump campaign has long worried that Kennedy’s campaign, built on conspiracies and anti-vaccine rhetoric, pulled directly from their side, especially in a handful of key states. The biggest chunk – about $1.9 million – was spent by Trump’s campaign and fundraising committees on a Trump-owned company that operates his jet. Karoline Leavitt, a spokesperson for Trump’s campaign, said that “committees are paying the fair market rate for all venues and services” provided by Trump businesses. The dynamic of candidates shelling out thousands on Trump’s businesses while vying for his endorsement – which can make or break Republican campaigns – is an example of how politics has boosted his businesses’ bottom line. About 150 congressional candidates have reported spending campaign funds at Trump businesses, including some Democrats in the years before his first presidential bid. Walker’s campaign spent a total of nearly $215,000 at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s West Palm Beach golf club and his Las Vegas hotel.

With Hunter Biden on trial, special counsel spending grows

CNN —Special counsel David Weiss’ office spent a total of $3.4 million over the past six months, a dramatic increase as it took Hunter Biden to trial in Delaware on gun-related charges and secured a conviction of the president’s son. Spending by two other Justice Department-appointed special counsels, Jack Smith and Robert Hur, decreased slightly compared with the six months prior. The disclosures come as courts have upped their scrutiny of special counsel office operations. Hunter Biden and another defendant in a separate criminal case have so far been unsuccessful in attempting to challenge special counsel Weiss’ authority. Challengers including Trump have argued that shouldn’t be allowed because Congress didn’t specifically sign off on the special counsel offices.

5 Takeaways From the Democratic Convention

A month and a day after Democrats made a change, Kamala Harris has the party faithful believing. The vice president’s speech on Thursday capped an ebullient four-day convention in Chicago that showcased the party’s reinvigorated chances against Donald J. Trump in the wake of President Biden’s decision to step aside. Before a convention hall packed with supporters in symbolic suffragette white, Ms. Harris became the second woman to formally accept the Democratic Party’s nomination as she tries to break through as the nation’s first female president. Not that she talked about that. Instead, Ms. Harris wrapped herself in the language of patriotism and American exceptionalism, unspooling the story of her upbringing by a single mother to present herself as a leader who understands the strains and aspirations of the middle class.

The next day, three minutes before shots were fired toward Trump, local police radioed that a man was on a nearby roof. That warning never made it to the Secret Service, whose snipers didn’t know the would-be assassin was on the roof until shots rang out. “I can confirm that the Butler County ESU team made radios available to the Secret Service and that they were not utilized by the Secret Service,” Goldinger said in a statement. But the issue of how to directly communicate with local law enforcement remains unresolved. Evan Vucci/AP Secret Service agents rush the stage immediately after the shooting.

Both candidates’ plans would probably raise the deficit and increase demand, including through government spending and tightening the labor market, Joe Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM US, told CNN via email. Trump has so far not released as detailed an economic plan as Harris. Risks of fueling demandA central part of Harris’ economic plan is making housing more affordable. “The problem right now is too many people chasing too few houses,” Justin Wolfers, professor of public policy and economics at the University of Michigan, told CNN. Economists have told CNN that businesses would be forced to raise wages and prices.

CNN —The judge overseeing Donald Trump’s criminal trial related to hush money payments said he will not recuse himself from the case, rejecting the former president’s latest attempt to remove him ahead of his sentencing next month. Trump has repeatedly sought to remove Judge Juan Merchan from the proceedings, citing work the judge’s daughter has done for Democratic campaigns. In denying Trump’s motion, the judge wrote, “this court now reiterates for the third time, that which should already be clear – innuendo and mischaracterization do not a conflict create.”The judge said Trump has offered no new facts to warrant another review. “Counsel has merely repeated arguments that have already been denied by this and higher courts,” Merchan wrote in his decision. “President Trump will continue to fight this scam, and will always do all he can to save this great country from the dangerously liberal Harris-Biden mess.”This story has been updated with additional reaction.

The situation has prompted Hunter Biden to add noted defense attorney Mark Geragos, who runs his firm out of Los Angeles, for the tax trial. The Delaware trial lasted seven days, but a tax trial is expected to last much longer, meaning at a far greater cost for the defendant. A previous deal between Hunter Biden and special counsel David Weiss to avoid trials and potentially prison time a year ago fell apart in dramatic fashion. Lunden Roberts, the mother of one of Hunter Biden’s children whom he had a child support battle over, has also been subpoenaed to testify, her lawyer says. Hunter Biden’s attorneys Lowell and Geragos have experience advocating for high-profile pardons.

But some of Trump’s critics warn that the former president could be laying the groundwork to question the outcome of the 2024 election if he loses a second time. Convention delegates held a virtual roll call ahead of the convention, with Harris receiving 99% support from the participating delegates. Republicans have acknowledged that after the DNC vote, there is no longer any path to challenge Harris’ placement on ballots. One of Trump’s intraparty foes said the former president’s efforts to question the legitimacy of Harris as the Democratic nominee could be a way to lay the groundwork to question the legitimacy of this year’s election. He also criticized Democrats in a news conference last week, stating that Harris taking over from Biden “seems to me, actually, unconstitutional.
