President-elect Donald Trump said Sunday Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his interest in a meeting regarding the war with Ukraine. "President Putin said that he wants to meet with me as soon as possible," Trump said during his remarks at Turning Point's America Fest convention. The president-elect recently criticized the policy change by President Joe Biden that allowed Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied weapons to strike inside Russian territory. The president-elect also recently said Ukraine will "possibly" receive less military aid once he takes office. "It's a flat plane, and the bullets are going and there's powerful bullets, powerful guns, and the only thing that's going to stop them is a human body."

CNN —It was near the end of an unusual day for the four Patterson children when the deputies came to arrest their mother. Robertson called the boy’s mother and tried to get some answers. In a phone interview, he said the Patterson case was “a complete misuse and a stretch of the statute.”It was not the first time authorities used this law in relation to parenting. I've planned girls' trips with friends for years, but it's been harder to coordinate them over time. Our adults-only trips aren't going anywhere, but we now plan group trips with our daughters, too. AdvertisementI especially love strengthening our bonds during getaways, and in my group, I handle planning and coordinating the girls' trips. I'm determined to keep up the girls' trip tradition, especially as life looks different for all of us. Trump says he might demand Panama hand over canal
  + stars: | 2024-12-22 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday accused Panama of charging excessive rates for use of the Panama Canal and said that if Panama did not manage the canal in an acceptable fashion, he would demand the U.S. ally hand it over. In an evening post on Truth Social, Trump also warned he would not let the canal fall into the "wrong hands," and he seemed to warn of potential Chinese influence on the passage, writing the canal should not be managed by China. But the U.S. government fully handed control of the canal to Panama in 1999 after a period of joint administration. "The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous, especially knowing the extraordinary generosity that has been bestowed to Panama by the U.S.," Trump wrote in his Truth Social post. If the principles, both moral and legal, of this magnanimous gesture of giving are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to us, in full, and without question."

Last week, Trump – with help from Musk – effectively killed a 1,500-page bipartisan funding legislation drafted by House Speaker Mike Johnson, R.-La., to fund the government beyond Friday. With more than 208 million followers on X, formerly Twitter, Musk voiced his opposition to the bill in several dozens of posts. His comments led some critics of Trump to point out that Musk seems to be calling the shots, mockingly calling him "President Musk." While Florida has managed to reverse the trend somewhat, the risk to homeowners is set to intensify. The Senate Budget Committee found that the rate of homeowners losing their private insurance also rose in Hawaii, North Carolina, and Massachusetts. Mark Friedlander, a spokesperson for the Insurance Information Institute, said the drop reflects a series of changes in recent years to stabilize the state's private insurance market after more than a dozen companies left the state or stopped writing new policies. The commission is working to overhaul regulations to slow the trend, including requiring private insurers to sell in risky areas. As insurers of last resort try to shift more risk to the private market, home insurance premiums are expected to keep rising.

Trump has railed against birthright citizenship, which is protected by the 14th Amendment, for years and suggested he’d use executive action to ban it. Trump allies argue that the 14th Amendment has been misinterpreted and doesn’t apply to children born in the United States to undocumented parents. They know they’re going to the Supreme Court with it, and they’ll methodically make their case,” said another source familiar. The strategizing by the Trump team to try to end birthright citizenship has been matched by the preparations made by those who would challenge the move in court. Longstanding Supreme Court precedents are also a major hurdle for the incoming Trump administration.

Memes, Jokes and Cats: South Koreans Use Parody for Political ProtestAs South Koreans took to the streets this month demanding the ousting of their president, some found an unexpected outlet to express their fury: jokes and satire. They hoisted banners and flags with whimsical messages about cats, sea otters and food. They waved signs joking that President Yoon Suk Yeol’s declaration of martial law had forced them to leave the comfort of their beds. Warren Buffett, who has long favored holding massive amounts of cash, is headed into 2025 with a particularly gigantic war chest at Berkshire Hathaway — in fact the largest cash hoard in 34 years. The Omaha-based conglomerate's cash level stands at $325 billion — a record high in absolute terms — and now accounts for about 30% of Berkshire's total assets, the highest percentage since 1990, according to data from Oppenheimer. Buffett first took control of Berkshire, originally a clothing manufacturer, in 1965 and went on to transform it into a one-of-a-kind conglomerate.
