In September 2018, 50,568 migrants tried to cross the southern border between legal ports of entry. A year later, 52,546 immigrants tried to cross, and in September 2020, the number was 54,771. This September’s preliminary total of about 54,000 attempted illegal crossings also includes an unspecified number of apprehensions at the northern U.S. border. Northern crossings have long been a tiny fraction of southern border crossings, though they have risen in 2024. It is not yet known how many immigrants came into the U.S. in the same period legally through newly created pathways established by the Biden administration.

Experts told BI that Israel still lacks a long-term strategic vision on how to end the war. But while Israel may have military superiority in the region, it lacks a clear, long-term strategic vision to end conflict in the Middle East, according to security experts. It's clear the Israel Defense Forces have achieved a series of tactical gains in recent weeks, but they still lack a clear military strategy, security analysts told Business Insider. "Neither outcome achieves Israel's security objectives, which would represent a defeat for the IDF and could threaten the survival of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government," Pfaff said. The problem may be that Israel's security doctrine has long been based on short wars.

A new military ground operation was launched on Sunday in Jabalya, northern Gaza, where the military said it is encircling the area after it saw signs of Hamas rebuilding. Earlier this year, Israel’s military said it had defeated Hamas in northern Gaza, only to announce new operations there in May. Ahead of the Israeli military announcements Monday, hospitals said they had received five bodies and several injured people following Israeli “artillery fire” in Beit Lahia, northern Gaza. The Israel military said it intercepted five projectiles launched from northern Gaza on Monday. Earlier in the day, nine projectiles were launched from southern Gaza, injuring two people, the military said.

Tracking Hurricane Milton’s Storm Surge Risk Across FloridaAs Hurricane Milton approaches landfall in Florida this week, the National Hurricane Center is releasing a series of data sets to help warn the public of the risks. Storm surge is one of the deadliest aspects of a strong hurricane as it approaches land. Depending on exactly where Milton makes landfall, storm surge will broadly fluctuate. The Florida Keys are forecast to experience strong winds and storm surge mostly below six feet. Wherever Milton makes landfall, storm surge will come ashore, especially just ahead and south of the storm’s center, similar again to what occurred during Ian.

The new nine-month Supreme Court term officially starts Monday, with the justices appearing in the courtroom to hear oral arguments. Major cases at the Supreme Court: U.S. v. Republicans challenged those changes, but the Supreme Court never took up a case about the issue at the time. PALM DESERT, Calif. — LeBron James and his son, Bronny, made NBA history Sunday night when they played together for the first time during the Los Angeles Lakers’ preseason game against Phoenix. Bronny James entered the game as a substitute to begin the second quarter, joining his father on the court out of the timeout. LeBron James is beginning his record-tying 22nd season in the NBA, while LeBron James Jr. — known to all as Bronny — was the Lakers’ second-round draft pick this summer. More than 90% of travelers from Southeast Asia say that gun prevalence in the United States influences whether they will visit, according to a new survey. However, nearly 80% said the likelihood that they would attend a mass gathering — such as a concert or music festival — would be greatly or moderately affected by the number of guns in the United States. Half of those surveyed said they have been to the United States. But a prior visit didn't calm Singaporeans' worries about gun violence to the same extent as other nationalities. Another 5% said they will out-and-out refuse to visit if Trump wins, with 2% saying the same about a Harris win.

The dockworkers' strike threatens supply chains, while Hurricane Helene caused costly damage. Devastation from Hurricane Helene, a dockworkers' strike, and escalating conflict in the Middle East all threaten to scramble supply chains and inflate prices. How much the strike impacts prices depends on how much of a cushion companies have built to deal with any bottlenecks. Bottlenecks also encourage carriers to raise their prices, increasing retail and consumer goods prices, Kent said. The hurricane has also disrupted some supply chains, including healthcare supplies and high-purity quartz needed for semiconductor manufacturing.

But investing in the stock market should be boring rather than exciting. While some hands-on traders approach betting on the stock market similarly to betting money on sports, the truth is they should have very little in common. Compared to sports betting, investing in the stock market should be "non-adrenaline focused," Egan said.
