Where This Summer Was Relentlessly Hot The planet just experienced its hottest months on record, and by a large margin, scientists said. Some areas, including northern Canada and some of Greenland, show temperatures more than 6 degrees Fahrenheit (3.3 degrees Celsius) above average. Phoenix, which is known for its extreme heat, shows temperatures more than 2 degrees Fahrenheit (1.1 degrees Celsius) above average. The global map spins to South America, where average daily temperatures were higher than normal for much of the continent. Areas of Sudan and Ethiopia show temperatures greater than 6 degrees Fahrenheit (3.3 degrees Celsius) higher than normal.

How to see the Draconid meteor shower
  + stars: | 2023-10-08 | by ( Ashley Strickland | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
CNN —Look up for the Draconid meteor shower this weekend, expected to peak October 8. However, the Draconid meteor shower is on the sparse side. The best way to view the meteor shower is by sitting in a reclining lawn chair or lying on your back and looking up at the sky with a wide view. If you live in an urban area, you might want to take a drive to avoid city lights, which can make the meteor shower seem faint. Meteor showersEach of the remaining meteor showers expected to peak this year will be most visible from late evening until dawn in areas without light pollution.

Jewish institutions in the US are on guard following Hamas' surprise attack on Israel. But it is urging Jewish groups to review their security procedures and stay in touch with police. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe attack on Israel launched early Saturday morning by Hamas militants in Gaza has shocked Jewish organizations and prompted concerns of anti-Semitic attacks in the United States and elsewhere. Security at Jewish institutions in the US was already heightened following terrorist attacks in recent years, such as the 2018 attack on the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, which killed 11 worshippers. AdvertisementAdvertisementLast year, the Anti-Defamation League said fighting between Israel and Hamas had contributed to a 34% rise in antisemitic incidents in the US in 2021.

A 2021 study by these researchers also dated the footprints, based on tiny plant seeds embedded in the sediment alongside them, to about 21,000 to 23,000 years ago. This paper is that corroborative exercise," added study co-lead author Kathleen Springer, also a USGS research geologist in Denver. Scientists believe our species entered North America from Asia by trekking across a land bridge that once connected Siberia to Alaska. The researchers also used optically stimulated luminescence dating to determine the age of quartz grains within the footprint-bearing sediments. "And just like today, if anyone walks in a similar setting, their footprints are preserved if they are covered with another layer of sediment," Springer added.

Surge in Job Openings in August, Defying Expectations
  + stars: | 2023-10-03 | by ( Tim Smart | Oct. | At A.M. | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +3 min
Job openings unexpectedly rose in August by 690,000 in a surprise that was led by a jump in demand for workers in business services, the Labor Department reported on Tuesday. Job openings rise to 9.6 mil from 8.8 mil last month. That means analysts will wait for other data on the job market out this week to see whether the job openings report is an anomaly. The job openings data lag the other labor market reports this week by a month. On Friday, the government will release its monthly jobs report for September with analysts looking for a continued moderation in the pace of growth in employment.

Interest to travel also fell in Canada and Russia (-4 percentage points each), the survey showed. Source: Morning ConsultAs to whether this suggests pent-up demand is ending: "Yes, our data suggests that is so," said Lindsey Roeschke, travel and hospitality analyst at Morning Consult. "We are sticking with our call that the U.S. will enter recession around the turn of the year," the report states. Intentions to visit North America fell 23 percentage points from 2022 — far eclipsing a drop in interest from South Korea (12 percentage points) and Japan (9 percentage points).

CNN —The full harvest moon will shine in the early morning hours of September 29, also marking the fourth and final supermoon of 2023. September’s full moon will appear about 5% bigger and 13% brighter than the average full moon, according to NASA. Other monikers for September’s full moon across different indigenous tribes include the corn maker moon from the Abenaki tribe, the moon of the brown leaves from the Lakota people and autumn moon from the Passamaquoddy tribe. Many people associate the harvest moon with being orange in color as it begins to rise, but the same could be said of all full moons. Only part of the moon will pass into shadow as the sun, Earth and moon will not completely align.

The arrival of warblers, vireos and other colorful birds last week has excited Britain’s twitching community — enthusiastic bird-watchers who will travel long distances to view new or unusual species. A sighting of a Canada warbler was the first recorded in Britain and similarly, a Blackburnian warbler was spotted in Ireland for the first time. Experts said twitchers should act fast if they want to see the North American arrivals, as the phenomenon will last just a few days longer. That storm reached Britain and Ireland last week, bringing several inches of heavy rain to much of Wales and northwest England. A tiny number reached Britain and Ireland, he added.

ENGLE, N.M. (AP) — While the average lifespan of North America's largest and most rare tortoise species is unknown, biologists have said it could span upward of a century. The “safe harbor agreement” will facilitate the release of captive tortoises on the Armendaris Ranch to establish a free-ranging population. The tortoise is just the latest example of a growing effort to find new homes for endangered species as climate change and other threats push them from their historic habitats. Absent a willingness by wildlife managers to think more broadly, he said, species like the Bolson tortoise could have a bleak future. That work will include getting state and federal permits to release tortoises outside of the enclosures on Turner lands.
