The test used a converted regional aircraft engine from Rolls-Royce, with hydrogen produced at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney. LONDON — Plans to reduce the significant environmental effects of aviation took a step forward this week after Rolls-Royce and easyJet said they had carried out the ground test of a jet engine that used hydrogen produced from tidal and wind power. The test, which was carried out at an outdoor site in the U.K., used a converted regional aircraft engine from London-listed Rolls-Royce. "This is a true British success story, with the hydrogen being used to power the jet engine today produced using tidal and wind energy from the Orkney Islands of Scotland," Shapps added. Using hydrogen to power an internal combustion engine is different to hydrogen fuel cell technology, where hydrogen from a tank mixes with oxygen, generating electricity.
The largest property owner on the Las Vegas Strip is doubling down and taking full ownership of the MGM Grand Las Vegas and Mandalay Bay, which the deal values at $5.5 billion. VICI currently owns a 50.1% stake in the property, which it acquired when it bought MGM Growth properties in May. Strip casinos are seeing a 20% surge in revenue through October to $6.8 billion in gaming revenue from a year ago. "It's further evidence that Las Vegas remains amongst the most in-demand destinations in the world," said Rosemary Vassiliadis, Clark County's director of aviation. And hotel revenue in Las Vegas was up 51% in October compared with October 2019, before the pandemic, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
Capital A, headed by Fernandes, will retain the digital, logistics and aviation services businesses, while AirAsia X will be renamed AirAsia Aviation and be led by long-time executive Bo Lingam under the plan. Capital A hopes submit to Bursa Malaysia Securities for approval in February. AirAsia X is also classified as PN17, but in an interview with Reuters on Tuesday, Fernandes said under the restructuring plan, both listed companies would emerge from that status by July 2023. Capital A investors will receive an in-specie distribution in the former AirAsia X, giving them exposure to a pure airline business with multiple brands. Fernandes said the distressed-company status had a "major impact" on the airline's share price by reducing investor confidence, which he hoped to restore through the restructuring plan.

The U.S. Department of Transportation on Monday said it has ordered Frontier Airlines and five foreign carriers to pay about $600 million in refunds to travelers whose flights were canceled or significantly changed by the airlines. Travelers are entitled to a refund when airlines cancel their flights, but many customers were offered vouchers when airlines slashed flights during the pandemic. Frontier Airlines has been required to pay $222 million in refunds, the Department of Transportation said Monday. "It shouldn't take an enforcement action from the U.S. Department of Transportation to get airlines to pay refunds that they're required to pay," Buttigieg said on a call with reporters Monday. DOT said those five airlines together had to pay just over $400 million in refunds.

watch nowThe aviation industry requires more carrot and less stick going forward to become more sustainable, according to the director general of the International Air Transport Association. "Quite honestly, all of the evidence that we have available shows that the carrot is far more effective than the stick," Walsh replied. Among other things, this would see both maritime and aviation fuels taxed. "So for us, the key to our goal is the use of sustainable aviation fuels — the science there is proven." "What we've got to do is turn what is very low levels of production of sustainable fuels into widespread availability."
[1/6] Briton Dan Hodd, 29 years old, who left Spain about a month ago to go to the COP27 in Sharm el Sheikh without flying, but mostly biking and using public transportation, plays the violin in Baghdad, Iraq October 26, 2022. “I am trying to illustrate the importance within the transport sector to do more about the climate crisis,” the 29-year-old Briton said. After a drop during the coronavirus pandemic, air traffic is expected to bounce back to 2019 levels by 2024-25, he said. Avoiding flying is not only part of Hodd’s message to delegates at COP27. His trip to Egypt is part of a long-term project to visit 100 countries in 10 years without flying, busking with his violin to earn enough to go on.
The Airline Passenger Experience Association named its Top 8 airlines in the world for 2023. The organization says it used more than a million passenger surveys that asked people about their experiences on 600 airlines around the world. The winners were not much different from last year, when the group named seven top carriers. These include Japan Airlines, Dutch national airline KLM, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines; and Middle Eastern carriers Qatar Airways, Saudia, and Emirates. Here's a closer look at the Top 8 airlines named by APEX for 2023, listed in alphabetical order.
Oct 25 (Reuters) - The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) wants the U.S. telecommunications regulatory agency to ensure a delay in some 5G C-Band transmissions from smaller operators. The letter was sent to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel was copied. The NTIA, FAA and FCC did not immediately comment. The FAA letter said the voluntarily mitigations by AT&T and Verizon "have resulted in the safe deployment of more than 50,000 wireless antennas across the nation." Nolen's letter seeks near-term conversations at senior levels between the NTIA, FAA and FCC.
REUTERS/Jason LeeExports of diesel fuel last month more than doubled from a year earlier to 1.73 million tonnes, the highest monthly rate since July 2021, according to data from the General Administration of Customs. Exports of aviation fuel, including refuelling at Chinese airports for airlines plying international routes, jumped by 38.6% from a year earlier to 1.23 million tonnes last month. China had maintained broad curbs on fuel exports this year, resulting in total fuel exports in the first nine months of 2022 falling 28% from a year earlier. But in an about-turn in fuel trade policy, Beijing in late September released an additional large batch of 15 million tonnes of export quotas, including 13.25 million tonnes for gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, with the remainder for marine fuel. Table below shows trade details, volumes in million tonnes.
Air cargo containers with the logo of Amazon are seen at Miami International Airport, in Miami, Florida, United States on June 16, 2021. Amazon has hired Hawaiian Airlines to fly the first Airbus cargo planes in the retail giant's air network, aircraft that will help replace older jets, as the carrier becomes the latest passenger airline to fly for the company. Hawaiian will fly at least 10 Airbus A330-300 converted freighters for Amazon, with the first ones starting in the fall of 2023, the carrier said in a filing. Amazon is still figuring out which of the older jets will be phased out, the spokesperson said. Amazon has similar agreements with other air cargo providers ATSG and Atlas.
Slideshow ( 3 images )WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) agreed to partner on advanced air mobility certification and operations, the U.S. regulator said Tuesday. The announcement comes as companies around the world are racing to develop and eventually win regulatory approval to deploy air taxis known electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (eVTOL). The low-altitude eVTOL urban air mobility aircraft has drawn a huge amount of interest around the world as numerous eVTOL companies have gone public. Last week, Delta Air Lines said it invested $60 million in air taxi startup Joby Aviation for a 2% equity stake, in a partnership that initially plans to offer passengers air taxi transport to and from airports in New York and Los Angeles. It hopes to receive approval to begin commercial flights in 2024.
WASHINGTON, Oct 17 (Reuters) - The U.S. Commerce Department said on Monday it had issued an order denying export privileges to Russian carrier Ural Airlines, citing what it said were ongoing export violations. The order terminates the right of Ural to participate in transactions subject to U.S. export regulations. President Joe Biden's administration has stepped up the crackdown against Russian airlines that followed the invasion of Ukraine, seeking to deny them access to spare parts, refueling and other services. To date, Commerce has issued 10 orders against Russia and Belarus’s biggest airlines, said Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Export Enforcement Matthew S. Axelrod. With the additions, there were 183 Boeing and Airbus aircraft on the list mostly operated by Russian airlines for apparent violations of U.S. export controls, the department said.
Companies Honeywell International Inc FollowNEW YORK, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Tech firm Honeywell International Inc (HON.O) will roll out technology that could increase supplies of lower-carbon aviation fuel produced from ethanol, the company said on Monday, as the Biden administration calls for the aviation industry to reduce emissions. Honeywell's technology can increase production efficiency of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to lower costs. Oil refiners have been trying to increase production of SAF to try to lower emissions. The new technology would also enable oil refiners and other fuel producers to convert current or idle facilities into SAF production plants, it said. Many producers have chosen to make sustainable aviation fuel from feedstocks with lower carbon-intensity, such as grease and animal fat.

REUTERS/Isabel KuaSINGAPORE, Sept 27 (Reuters) - Global aviation fuel demand is expected to fully recover to pre-pandemic levels of 300 million tonnes per year in the next one to two years, the head of aviation at Shell (SHEL.L) said on Tuesday. SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUELShell is considering building two more sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plants in the United States, as it aims for renewable fuel to account for 10% of its global jet sales by 2030, Toschka said. "We will be having more than 2 million tonnes of SAF annually by 2030," he added. Aviation, accounting for 3% of the world's carbon emissions, is one of the most difficult forms of transportation to decarbonise.
Putin announced a partial mobilization last week, meaning more Russian troops going to Ukraine. Some are paying up to $27,000 to escape on private jets, The Guardian reported. Companies that offer private jet flights have reported a sharp increase in requests for one-way flights out of Russia, according to The Guardian. Many European countries say they will not allow Russians fleeing mobilization to enter, and many had already blocked Russian tourists. "All the European private jet firms have left the market.
Hong Kong (CNN Business) International airlines are scrambling to add more flights to Hong Kong as the city ends two and a half years of quarantine measures , leading to a surge in demand for travel. This will absolutely increase the demand for travel to and from Hong Kong," Christoph Meyer, Lufthansa's general manager of sales for Hong Kong, Macao and South China, said in a statement. International Air Transport Association Director General Willie Walsh said last week that China's zero-Covid policy had "devastated" Hong Kong. It's true what they say: to look at the flight attendant if you're scared during a flight. I really never get scared in turbulence — when I'm traveling for leisure, it usually puts me to sleep. I've been working as a flight attendant for a major airline for four years, and you may have seen me from my TikTok account. Second, I share information or tips that travelers wouldn't normally know, like the fact that a flight attendant can't set foot off of a plane if even a single passenger is on board, per FAA regulations. The walkout by security staff has resulted in a high three-digit number of flight cancellations, German airports association ADV said. Some 160 of them were at Duesseldorf airport, accounting for more than half of the planned 290 departures and arrivals, the airport said. At Cologne/Bonn, 94 out of 136 flights were called off, and Berlin airport's website also showed many cancelled flights. Tuesday's walkout will hit Germany's busiest airport, Frankfurt, which handled around 2.1 million passengers last month. Labour union Verdi is demanding that employers raise the wages of airport security staff by at least 1 euro an hour for the next 12 months and that staff in different parts of Germany earn the same.
