Japan's newest strategic review names China, North Korea and Russia as threats to Japanese security. Clearer explanations of the threats to Japan's national security will prove critical as the government seeks public support for an ambitious defense spending plan." The review is part of a reconsideration of Japan's needs in the face of growing threats from its well-armed neighbors, especially China. China has "conducted joint bomber flights and naval navigations with Russia in the vicinity of Japan," the paper said. AdvertisementBesides external threats and new equipment, the paper highlighted a critical need for the Japan Self-Defense Forces: more people.

Some 97 percent of Americans consider dogs (or other pets) part of their families. A majority of dog owners celebrate canine birthdays, and nearly two-thirds report that they take more photos of their dogs than of family members. America now has more dogs than children, and households are spending lavishly on pets. Warning that dogs may suffer storm anxiety, one company offers canine noise-canceling headphones for $200. Dog people spend thousands of dollars on oil paintings of Rover, not to mention large sums on dog spas, dog restaurants, dog bakeries and dog fashion.

Humans were making rope nearly 40,000 years agoExperts think this ivory baton was used for rope making around 38,000 years ago. One artifact, an eight-inch piece of ivory with grooved holes, wasn't easy to identify. Archaeologists have found similar items, known as batons, in the UK and France. Made of ivory or antler, they have holes with grooves on the inside, and some have notches. Based on descriptions of rope-making with similar tools from the Middle Ages, the researchers recreated the process with a replica of the piece of ivory.

Just hours after former President Donald J. Trump made false assertions about her racial identity, Vice President Kamala Harris had an extraordinary opportunity to respond. With careful precision, the vice president acknowledged his statements, made at the annual meeting of the National Association of Black Journalists, and condemned his behavior. But although she often casts herself as a fighter eager to confront Mr. Trump, she showed restraint on Wednesday, refusing to engage in a debate with a white man critiquing her Blackness. “It was the same old show,” she said. And let me just say, the American people deserve better.”

Ms. Harris told The Washington Post in 2019 that she had long been comfortable with her racial identity. Ms. Harris joined Alpha Kappa Alpha, a sorority for Black women, at Howard University, a historically Black university. Ms. Harris failed California’s bar exam on her first attempt in July 1989, according to her autobiography, and received a letter in November that she had failed, “to my utter devastation.” While she did not address her subsequent exams in the book, Ms. Harris was admitted to the bar in June 1990. Mr. Trump is taking outsize credit. It is also worth noting that Mr. Trump did not request the increased funding that the schools received.

While many unions were quick to endorse Ms. Harris after President Biden dropped out and gave her his backing, the U.A.W. Both Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris have ties to organized labor. Mr. Biden became the first sitting president to join a picket line when he visited striking autoworkers in Michigan last year, and Ms. Harris also joined workers during a strike against General Motors when she served in the Senate. A protest movement against Mr. Biden in Michigan’s Democratic primary earned significant support — a worrying sign for Democratic hopes of winning the state in November. The union also represents tens of thousands of graduate students and other academic workers, many of whom have been outspoken in their opposition to the war in Gaza.

Vice President Kamala Harris carefully hit back at former President Donald J. Trump after he questioned the legitimacy of her identity as a Black woman, saying on Wednesday that he had put on the “same old show” of “divisiveness and disrespect.”“The American people deserve better,” Ms. Harris said at a convention of Sigma Gamma Rho, one of the nation’s most prominent Black sororities. “The American people deserve a leader who tells the truth, a leader who does not respond with hostility and anger when confronted with the facts. We deserve a leader who understands that our differences do not divide us — they are an essential source of our strength.”But she did not directly quote or refer to Mr. Trump’s comments earlier on Wednesday in Chicago, where he had asked of Ms. Harris: “Is she Indian or is she Black?” He had also falsely claimed that Ms. Harris used to identify as Indian and then “all of a sudden, she made a turn, and she became a Black person.”The vice president is of Jamaican and Indian heritage, and attended Howard University, a historically Black university.

The race to define Vice President Kamala Harris began in earnest on Tuesday, with both her campaign and former President Donald J. Trump’s team unveiling television advertisements that aim to explain her biography to voters in battleground states. “Kamala Harris has always known who she represents.”Mr. Trump’s new ad, meanwhile, attacks her as being weak on the border. It suggests that she is responsible for millions of border crossings and a quarter-million deaths from fentanyl, which the ad says occurred “on Harris’s watch.” It closes with a new Trump tagline for Ms. Harris: “Failed. Dangerously Liberal.”Just over a week ago, Ms. Harris replaced President Biden as the Democratic Party’s standard-bearer. Despite being the vice president and having represented the nation’s largest state as one of California’s senators, Ms. Harris is relatively unknown by many of the voters in battleground states who are likely to decide the presidential election.

Sudan has in this century endured genocide, civil war and partition, and now its crisis has worsened. Famine has officially been declared in part of the Darfur region in western Sudan. Malnutrition is widespread around the world — about one-fifth of all children globally are physically stunted from inadequate food — but this only very rarely rises to the level of famine. In the 21st century, this is only the third official famine, after one in Somalia in 2011 and one in South Sudan in 2017. The famine review committee, a group of independent nutrition experts, declared on Thursday that famine had officially arrived at the Zamzam camp, home to about 500,000 displaced people near the city of El Fasher in Darfur.

Mr. Vance’s stumbles have come after a remarkable two weeks when Mr. Trump survived an assassination attempt and then rallied the party — and even some skeptics — behind him. Then, in a sense, Mr. Trump and Mr. Vance became the victims of that success. Some of Mr. Vance’s comments on some conservative podcasts veered into serious policy critiques that trucked in antisemitic tropes and racial stereotypes. The Harris campaign has been able to keep the spotlight on the momentum behind her fledgling presidential run — and away from Mr. Trump. Still, the Harris campaign was happy with the bruises they had inflicted.

Here’s a bargain of the most horrifying kind: For less than $100,000, it may now be possible to use artificial intelligence to develop a virus that could kill millions of people. That’s the conclusion of Jason Matheny, the president of the RAND Corporation, a think tank that studies security matters and other issues. “It wouldn’t cost more to create a pathogen that’s capable of killing hundreds of millions of people versus a pathogen that’s only capable of killing hundreds of thousands of people,” Matheny told me. In contrast, he noted, it could cost billions of dollars to produce a new vaccine or antiviral in response.

“While you teach students about our nation’s past, these extremists attack the freedom to learn and acknowledge our nation’s true and full history,” she said to applause and cheers. “Including book bans. Book bans in this year of our Lord 2024!”But Ms. Harris’s speech to members of the American Federation of Teachers also ignored several crucial education issues that could put her on shakier political ground — and that Republicans are already seeking to tie her to. There was no mention of the long-term negative effects of pandemic-era school closures, which local teachers’ unions pushed to extend. She did not address whether families should have greater access to charter schools, private-school vouchers or public funds for home-schooling — all options that the unions argue reduce funds for traditional public schools.

A former Army National Guard police officer was sentenced to two and a half years in prison on Tuesday after admitting that he pepper-sprayed law enforcement officers, while a mob of former President Donald J. Trump’s supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. He surrendered two days later, and in April he pleaded guilty to assaulting, resisting or impeding officers during the Capitol riot, federal prosecutors said. Judge James E. Boasberg of Federal District Court in Washington, D.C., also sentenced Mr. Yetman to 18 months of supervised release and ordered him to pay $2,000 in restitution. Prosecutors had sought a 45-month prison term; Mr. Yetman’s lawyer, Nicholas D. Smith, had asked for 17 months. Mr. Smith declined to comment on the sentence.

The prosecutor-versus-felon approach may appeal to undecided voters who had been sour on both Mr. Trump and President Biden. Mr. Trump, for his part, has been trying to soften some of his harshest rhetoric about seeking vengeance on his rivals ahead of the general election. In the case of Ms. Harris, the contempt is displayed both in public and private. Since then, Mr. Trump has attacked her savagely, particularly when she became Mr. Biden’s running mate in 2020. On Sunday, Mr. Trump, who has insisted he would debate Mr. Biden anytime and anywhere, appeared to try to change the terms of the second debate.
