He now lives in Bergen County with his wife of three years, Nadine Menendez. They met years ago at one of his favorite haunts, an IHOP in Union City, a city he has represented as mayor and in the State Legislature and the House of Representatives before being elected to the Senate. Mr. Menendez has been preparing to run for a fourth Senate term, and there are no indications that the indictment will change that plan. As a young man, he wore a bulletproof vest into federal court to testify against a onetime mentor, William V. Musto, then the mayor of Union City. Mr. Musto was convicted of taking hundreds of thousands of dollars in kickbacks from a contractor hired to build schools.

Federal prosecutors are charging Sen. Robert Menendez in a bribery and corruption scandal. Menendez allegedly helped a trio of businessmen and Egypt in exchange for — among other things — gold bars. Menendez previously faced corruption charges in 2017, but the case was dropped. The indictment alleges that Menendez "provided sensitive US government information and took other steps that secretly aided the Government of Egypt." In exchange, prosecutors allege that Wael "Will" Hana, who helped run the company, provided Menendez's wife, Nadine Menendez, a "low-or-no-show job."

As the day went on after the bombshell indictment, Democrats began bailing on their legally troubled colleague. The indictment said Menendez used his position to help the business executives as well. The indictment includes cinematic, almost comical details about the payoffs Menendez is said to have accepted. Some of the cash was stashed in jackets that were embroidered with the words "Robert Menendez" or "Senator Menendez." At one point, the indictment said, Menendez did a Google search for "kilo of gold price."

Senator Robert Menedez (D-NJ) walks to the Senate floor for a procedural vote at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, U.S. September 20, 2023. The investigation marks the third time Menendez has been investigated by federal prosecutors, but he has never been convicted. Prosecutors said Hana, who is originally from Egypt, arranged dinners and meetings between Menendez and Egyptian officials in 2018 at which the officials pressed Menendez on the status of U.S. military aid. Menendez at a meeting in 2018 told Hana non-public information about the status of the aid, prosecutors said. Hana then texted an Egyptian official, "The ban on small arms and ammunition to Egypt has been lifted," according to the indictment.

Sen. Bob Menendez took bribes of cash, gold, and other luxury items, according to a new indictment. But there's a way more legal way to make money as a senator — just write a best-selling book! AdvertisementAdvertisementBut there's a totally legal way to make extra money — sometimes way more money than the $174,000 salary — as a sitting member of Congress. That would seem to indicate that Menendez's book wasn't exactly a cash cow for him. Perhaps if he had run for president, as many of the top book-sellers in the Senate have, he could've written another book and made more money, the legal way.

Sen. Bob Menendez was hit with bribery charges by federal prosecutors in a newly-unsealed indictment. Sen. Bob Menendez Googled the price of "kilos of gold" during an alleged bribery scheme, an indictment claims. The senator's most recent financial disclosure showed that his wife continued to own gold bars. Menendez previously amended his Senate financial disclosure reports to report that Nadine Menendez, his wife, had gold bars worth as much as $250,000 in 2020, The New York Times reported. “For years, forces behind the scenes have repeatedly attempted to silence my voice and dig my political grave,” Menendez said in a statement. It's a sign, those who know Menendez said, that he won't be going anywhere without a fight, for now. His own biography touts the fact that he wanted to fight corruption early in his political career, testifying against Union City officials and building a reputation as tough. Menendez was appointed to be a U.S. senator in 2006 when the seat opened up after incumbent Jon Corzine became governor. The couple began dating in 2018 and got engaged in 2019 after meeting at an IHOP in Union City, a frequent haunt of Menendez’s.

London CNN —Fraudsters have robbed Europe’s largest copper producer of €185 million ($198 million) worth of the metal, possibly with the help of insiders, the company said Tuesday. The inventory had established the scale of thefts the company disclosed on August 31 and in June, an Aurubis spokesperson told CNN. The losses forced Aurubis to slash its pretax profit forecast for the current fiscal year by about €170 million ($182 million). Whether the same criminals are behind these past cases and the theft disclosed in August is the subject of ongoing investigations, the Aurubis spokesperson said Tuesday. Aurubis produces about 1.1 million tonnes (1.2 million tons) of copper “cathodes,” or square sheets, per year at plants in Europe and the United States.

LONDON, Sept 7 (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak faces another difficult vote to fill a vacant seat in parliament after a lawmaker who was given an eight-week suspension for groping two men at a London club last year announced he plans to resign. Berlin CNN —A 98-year-old former Nazi concentration guard has been indicted on charges of aiding and abetting the murder of more than 3,300 people during the Holocaust, German authorities said on Friday. The public prosecutor in the western city of Giessen, near Frankfurt, said in a statement that the man worked at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp between 1943 and 1945. Germany is racing against time to bring the last surviving perpetrators of Nazi war crimes – now well into old age – to justice. Of the roughly 200,000 prisoners who passed through the camp, around 100,000 are thought to have died there. An estimated 6 million Jews were killed in Nazi concentration camps during World War II.

LONDON, Aug 27 (Reuters) - UK member of parliament Nadine Dorries has delivered a scathing attack on her Conservative Party's leader Rishi Sunak in her formal resignation letter, accusing the prime minister of running a "zombie parliament" and lacking any political vision. "You hold the office of prime minister unelected, without a single vote, not even from your own MPs.
