Trump Media ended the trading day at $16.98 per share, a 6% decline on the day. Trump Media shares on Wednesday closed below where they stood at the end of 2023, as the Truth Social maker's stock continued to slide ahead of the date when majority owner Donald Trump can begin selling his stake . The stock price has ricocheted since then, as traders and analysts increasingly viewed Trump Media as a meme stock and as its value rose and fell with the political fortunes of the Republican presidential nominee. A Trump Media spokesperson told CNBC in a statement, "Trump Media is rapidly building out our platform while maintaining a strong balance sheet." That upcoming deadline has stoked speculation about whether Trump will try to cash out his shares or hold on to his stake.

Musk could "sacrifice some of the short-term interest in Tesla," Ward added, "if it'll satisfy the long-term interests of his ambitions." Musk and Tesla didn't respond to requests from Reuters for comment. The growing bond between Trump and Musk could be on display Monday night, when the Tesla boss is scheduled to interview the Republican candidate on X, Musk's social media platform. It's unclear exactly what ambitions Musk could seek to advance through his increasingly vocal rejection of progressive platforms – from EV subsidies to identity politics. A Reuters review of Congressional lobbying records – and Tesla's public comments to federal and state regulators – shows that the company has continued working to shape public policy in favor of such benefits.

But, while Tesla's sales are dropping, the EV market as a whole is expanding, including in California. The Japanese government ordered Toyota Motor on Wednesday to make "drastic reforms" after discovering new violations in the automaker's vehicle certification procedures. In a so-called corrective order, the transport ministry said on-site inspections had uncovered widespread, intentional misconduct and irregularities in seven additional models that had not been previously disclosed. Toyota said the corrective order instructed it to "make drastic reforms to ensure appropriate certification operations." Toyota and four other vehicle makers admitted in June they had submitted either flawed or manipulated data when applying for certification of vehicles.
