A jury reached its decision Thursday in the penalty trial of Nikolas Cruz, who gunned down 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in 2018. The trial was to decide whether to sentence him to life in prison or the death penalty. The decision by the 12-person jury was determined about three months after opening statements began July 18 and after the jury received deliberation instructions Wednesday. The jury has to reach a unanimous decision for the death sentence. The gunman, then 19, had stormed the high school on Valentine’s Day wielding an AR-15-style rifle and releasing a spray of bullets.

The families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School victims actually know what Hell feels like. Jones put them there with his heinous conspiracy theories and lies about the 2012 shooting, which he repeated again and again over the years, ignoring pleas to stop. And it is, unfortunately, more popular than ever, with right-wing media stars and top Republican politicians emulating Jones’ modus operandi.

Plaintiffs in the trial included family members of eight school students and employees, in addition to one FBI agent who responded to the scene. He was streaming live when the jury’s decision was read in court, mocked the decision on his Infowars show and used it to fundraise. The figure, he said, would represent the more than 550 million online impressions Jones’ Sandy Hook lie allegedly received online. The decision in Connecticut comes two months after a separate jury in Texas determined that Jones and his company should award two Sandy Hook parents who sued in that state nearly $50 million. While Jones initially lied about the 2012 shooting, he later acknowledged that the massacre had occurred as he faced multiple lawsuits.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Tuesday turned away a Black death row inmate's appeal over claims he did not receive a fair trial because several jurors had expressed opposition to interracial relationships. He stabbed all three to death and attempted to remove their hearts, saying later he hoped to “set them free from evil,” according to court filings. At the 2005 trial for the murder of Leyha Hughes, the all-white jury found that Thomas was guilty and sentenced him to death. One juror said that he opposed interracial relationships because it was "against God’s will," according to court filings. The state’s lawyers argue in part that all three jurors said they would follow the law as instructed and could deliver an impartial verdict.

There was “absolutely no chance” Scherer would quit the case, said Bob Jarvis, a professor at Nova Southeastern University’s law school. Scherer, a former prosecutor, had never overseen a first-degree murder trial before being assigned the Cruz case. The prosecution, having expected the defense case to last much longer, wasn’t prepared to begin its rebuttal case. “This is the most uncalled for, unprofessional way to try a case,” Scherer said. “If I would have known earlier this was going to be happening, I would not have dragged you in here,” Scherer told the jurors.

Prosecutors highlighted Rosendorff’s testimony during their closing arguments to a jury that convicted Holmes on four felony counts of investor fraud and conspiracy earlier this year after a nearly four-month trial. The same jury acquitted Holmes on charges of fraud and conspiracy against patients who had their blood tested by Theranos. In their filing, Holmes lawyers said they had not been able to ask Rosendorff for further information about his reflections on his trial testimony for ethical reasons. Also on Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Edward Davila formally rejected a request to set aside the jury’s verdicts in Holmes’ trial. Davila’s decision cited Rosendorff’s testimony in support of his ruling.
